To ask you what I can do with a massive joint of gammon?

I got sucked into the excitement of Costco, and bought an enormous gammon joint. We don’t even eat gammon that often.

It’s been in the freezer for a month as I’ve no idea what to do with it. It’s too big to fit in the slow cooker which is frustrating as that would have been my go to! DH’s grandparents are coming for dinner next weekend, so thinking of finally using it. However I don’t want to just chuck it in the oven on it’s own and cook it dry. Anyone have any lovely recipe suggestions?

Saw it in half and cook in slow cooker!

Vitalogy · 03/08/2018 11:28

Could you defrost it , saw it in half then it'll fit in your slow cooker. Grin
Sorry I've got no recipe though.

Vitalogy · 03/08/2018 11:29

Great minds Eatsleepworkrepeat Grin

If only you had internet access, then you could find many gammon recipes Sad

PickettBowtruckles · 03/08/2018 11:30

Love how simple the sawing it in half to fit is! How did I not think of that?!

Nigella's recipe for Gammon in Cola is delicious. I always get a joint bigger than needed so I have leftovers to make a Ham Risotto.

GrumpyCatIsMyPatronus · 03/08/2018 11:31

How about this recipe?

Do a roast with some of it. Serve with parsley sauce. Make a load of pea and ham soup. Food of the Gods!

PickettBowtruckles · 03/08/2018 11:32

Gammon in cola sounds interesting! I’ve done Diet Coke chicken before, I wonder if it’s a similar taste

Oops, cross posted with you @Sunseed it’s a lovely recipe though! Grin

Bizzylizzyloo · 03/08/2018 11:32

Cook it in a huge pan in Coca Cola - trust me it's amazing!

Bizzylizzyloo · 03/08/2018 11:32

Sorry, cross posted Grin

littlewhitething · 03/08/2018 11:33

I agree with the coca cola idea - and I hate cola!

MustBeThin · 03/08/2018 11:33

I just like good old gammon, homemade oven chips, fried egg n sometimes baked beans with bread and butter. 🤤

PickettBowtruckles · 03/08/2018 11:33

Okay Nigella’s Cola version looks amazing. What would you serve it with though?! (Can you tell I don’t cook gammon often...)

Another vote for Coca Cola here.

We will need pictures!

SnuggyBuggy · 03/08/2018 11:36

Sawing frozen gammon in half is just the sort of thing I'd attempt and then get into a rage over Grin

Do you have a big cooking pot? Cooking it in coke is a good idea. I've also done cherryade or apple juice with star anise and cloves.

MaxPepsi · 03/08/2018 11:38

I would par boil it, then finish it off in the oven glazed with honey (My mum does this every Christmas)

Then I would serve it as an informal buffet.
So loads of salads, breads, pickles etc.

Any leftovers I would then carve up and serve with chips and fried eggs.

Food. Of. The. Gods.

maddening · 03/08/2018 11:39

You might need to soak it first?

Whatever your family like!

Rice, mash, roasties, boiled potatoes
Carrot, broccoli, whatever!

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 03/08/2018 11:40

Yep, I second the coca cola recipe it's delicious. I also would use some of the ham for pea and ham soup, then freeze ready for winter. Ham and egg pie, ham risotto. Ham egg n chips.

GahWhatever · 03/08/2018 11:41

With or without coke, soak it and then roast it with some liquid in the bottom of the tin, well covered except for the last 30 mins or so.
I'd serve it hot one day with parsley sauce, wilted greens, and if it were winter, mashed potato.
And another day with warm honey and mustard dressing, green beans and roast potatoes.
Then cold with fried eggs and chips another day.
Then cold with hot buttered new potatoes, mixed green salad and lots of pickles one day.
Then some chunks into a creamy sauce with chicken and into a deep dish pie.
Then in sandwiches with sliced tomato and real butter.
Then chop some leftovers into pea soup or potato and carrot soup or lentil soup (all of which will freeze well.
How big did you say this joint was?

Sunseed · 03/08/2018 11:42

I serve roast potatoes and plain veg (green beans, carrots, etc). I also put the onions and a few ladlefuls of the cooking liquor into the roasting tin so that it makes its own gravy.

GahWhatever · 03/08/2018 11:47

If you try sawing it frozen you are going to need two stout men to hold it still and a chainsaw!!! Gammon is dense!
