To ask you what I can do with a massive joint of gammon?

I got sucked into the excitement of Costco, and bought an enormous gammon joint. We don’t even eat gammon that often.

It’s been in the freezer for a month as I’ve no idea what to do with it. It’s too big to fit in the slow cooker which is frustrating as that would have been my go to! DH’s grandparents are coming for dinner next weekend, so thinking of finally using it. However I don’t want to just chuck it in the oven on it’s own and cook it dry. Anyone have any lovely recipe suggestions?

Another idea with left overs is get some cheese and just roll puff pastry and make cheese and ham pasties.

HeresIdea852 · 03/08/2018 12:10

Ratatouille goes really well and that can be in slow cooker if gammon in oven.

Dippysnowoman · 03/08/2018 12:25

Definitely cook in coke in the slow cooker. We usually spread honey over the top too. Mmmmm

Childrenofthesun · 03/08/2018 12:28

Put it in the audience of Question Time?

Childrenofthesun · 03/08/2018 12:30

Failing that, use any of the recipes above then slice and freeze - we always freeze leftover gammon at Christmas. I didn't like the coke recipe when I tried it but it's nice booked, then finished in the oven with a marmalade glaze.

Childrenofthesun · 03/08/2018 12:31

boiled, not booked!

BuntyII · 03/08/2018 12:38

I'd defrost it, boil it for a couple of hours then put it in the oven studded with cloves and with a honey and orange glaze. Serve with parsnips and roast potatoes.

Dixiechickonhols · 03/08/2018 12:41

Soak in water so not salty overnight. Boil in coke then finish in oven with a glaze eg maple syrup. Have as a roast then use cold for sandwiches, with cauliflower cheese etc.

If you want to go posh, do it in tea! Is amazing, I promise. Google 'ham in earl grey' or similar. I once found a recipe where you then used creme fraiche in the cooking liquid at the end and it made a really nice creamy sauce for the ham.

Then, yes, as PPs have said, look up things to do with leftover ham. Will make lots of really nice dinners in potato and pasta dishes, or just cold with stuff.

Send it our way, I love gammon. I hope you find something lovely to do with it though. No suggestions from me (dh takes care of all that).

Cook some, pressure can the rest

I worked in a pub/carvery in the 80s and we got through a joint of fresh gammon a day. It gives so many leftovers to use in other things.

So, first of all it was boiled, skin off and fat scored into diamonds, then finished off in the oven to crisp up. Centrepiece (along with our daily dog-size fresh turkey) for the carvery buffet or as gammon egg and chips bar food.
Leftovers in decreasing size were used for delicious ham sandwiches, (turkey) chicken and ham pie or pea and ham soup.
All very 80s but we made a lot of money out of one joint. It’s so highly flavored that a little goes a long way!

Gammon is amazing with lovely buttery jacket potatoes and salty carrots

I am sure I can't help you now it's frozen but, for future reference, ham freezes beautifully. I buy a whole organic leg each December but there are only three of us here. DH now keeps a hacksaw blade in my pantry to use once per year.

Method: I cut around it into 4 or 5 pieces. DH then saws away. I wrap each piece in a double layer of foil, weigh and write weight and whether bone in or bone out. Defrost as required through the year.

Seeing as I buy it in December, DH gets a piece for his birthday and then there is another piece for Christmas.

As I cook it and remove the rind (best ever crackling, btw) I peel off the rind and chop it into pieces. It's kept in a bucket at the back of the fridge for adding to stews, risottos etc for that bit of oomph.

I get the best behaved dog when a bit of ham rind is on offer.

With your whole gammon, once it's defrosted, it needs to be used so well, it's summer so a party might be in order. In Aus, Christmas in July is popular to have cold weather stuff in winter. Perhaps a reverse might be in order? Google an Aussie Christmas for ideas.

Coke ham is a regular in our house. We have it with green beans and creamy potatoes (sliced potatoes cooked in cream with garlic). Yum

FrenchFancie · 03/08/2018 13:17

Elect it to parliament

Taffeta · 03/08/2018 13:18

Slow cook it so it’s “pulled” and serve in baps with sauce - BBQ, chilli, cranberry whatever you like

Here is a good looking recipe

OhFFSDH · 03/08/2018 13:18

Cut it in half, one half in the slow cooker with some ginger beer, carrots, onions and seasoning to taste.

Other half is another meal, perhaps a roast? Cook it with a bit of water in bottom of tray, honey and half an orange on top, baste a quarter, then half, then three quarters the way through cooking.

mavydoes · 03/08/2018 13:19

Gammon in Cola is amazing - saw if half if only need that amount but you could make risotto, stovies, cold cuts etc

bbc food is good for ideas

MrsJayy · 03/08/2018 13:23

Roast it and have it with roast potatoes and cauli cheese put some honey over it if you like but mine is never cooked dry. Cut leftover up into slices and freeze them for sandwhiches or chickenand ham pie.

Thesearmsofmine · 03/08/2018 13:25

I cook it with dark brown sugar and it’s lovely.

Maybugger · 03/08/2018 13:30

No need for cola etc. The best gammon recipe I've ever done:
Put a 1cm layer of soft brown sugar in the bottom of your slow cooker, smother the joint in more sugar and place on top. No liquid required.
Cook on low for 7-10hrs depending on size of joint.
It's absolutely divine 😋

MrsJayy · 03/08/2018 13:34

Gammon Egg & chips is the dogs doodahs Grin

Anquin · 03/08/2018 13:37

Gammon in cola is known in my house as “White trash ham” Grin

SpaceDinosaur · 03/08/2018 13:39

I bought a Costco gammon on Wednesday 😂

I did cut mine in half first, half's currently residing in the freezer but the other half I cooked in coke with a couple of onions then finished off in the oven with honey and mustard.

After Wednesday's supper we've also had sandwiches, salad and a carbonara... it's all sliced and some ham's frozen. My husband will undoubtedly make a frittata... I love giant gammon, feeds us for AAAAAAGES!
