to wonder when UK English got so Americanised?

I've read 2 threads this morning where people have gone to the 'store'. Then there's the 'gotten' and 'mom' thing. I feel like a spluttering Basil Fawlty saying this, but when did English in the UK lose its identity so much? Was Friends the start of the rot or was it earlier?

OP posts:
CantThinkOfAnotherNameAgain · 01/08/2018 07:25

Baby showers and prom nights, both American and now both celebrated in U.K.

How long before we do thanksgiving? Can't we think of our own ideas?!

Lobsterquadrille2 · 01/08/2018 07:25

And dressing up for Halloween and trick or treating ....

AuroraFloyd · 01/08/2018 07:29

Is this an English site for local English people?

SenorBork · 01/08/2018 07:33

The ‘z’ spelling, as in Americanization (among others) is actually correct UK English spelling as well. Check your Oxford English Dictionary if you don’t believe me. The ‘s’ is a nasty French import Grin.

ushuaiamonamour · 01/08/2018 07:37

LaurieMarlow That's interesting. Whereabouts is it used--northern Connacht? I'm in a rural area in the West & it's not used (yet) in this neck of the woods.

If the Académie française can't keep Americanisms out of French I don't think British English can be made impervious to them.

ShatnersBassoon · 01/08/2018 07:38

Bloody foreign words sneaking in to our fine, pure language.

YaLoVeras · 01/08/2018 07:41

1999 onwards.

I went to see mamma mia the other day and was told to 'enjoy the movie'.

Nobody under 30 feels awkward using American English.

But it is the evolution of language. It is interesting.

I think we will all have American accents in 50 years

Greenandcabbagelooking · 01/08/2018 07:41

I dislike hearing people say “can I get...” in coffee shops, instead of “may I have...” or “I’d like a...”

waffledoggy · 01/08/2018 07:44

My daughter says closet instead of wardrobe, cotton candy and elevator.

Whyohsky · 01/08/2018 07:48

Surely you mean ‘became’?

JassyRadlett · 01/08/2018 07:50

I blame the Normans, TBH.

ALemonyPea · 01/08/2018 07:51

I blame YouTube

Shortstuff08 · 01/08/2018 07:53

Why is it an issue? Language evolves.

It only on mn the Americanisms are a problem.

For the record 'store' was used in the 80s and 90s where I live, for the local shop.

Gotten is commonly used as is mom.

Language never stays the same. What does stay the same is older people getting their knickers in a twist because things aren't the same as when they were young.

Neshoma · 01/08/2018 07:55

This should have been titled ‘to wonder why UK English has gotten so Americanized’.

You mean become - there's always another word for got

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 01/08/2018 07:55

I blame the Normans and the Vikings.

Actually no, I thank the Vikings. We’d probably still be using a million different cases if it weren’t for them. Oh and grammatical gender. Shock

I mean seriously what IS the point of gender?!

I love Americanisms. They’re fun and they tend to be more phonetic.

ScrubTheDecks · 01/08/2018 07:58

Dreadful American words like zucchini instead of courgette... Wink

I am defending macaroni cheese against mac’n’cheese til the last!

Can’t stand ‘can I get...’, I’m another who thinks it sounds rude,

Transatlantic valley girl upspeak also irritates me to death in tne mouths of S Londoners, it all sounds so fake, like a spoken version of a selfie.

Please tell me we will never serve marshmallows cooked on top of green beans and condensed mushroom soup and call it a casserole?

shoelaces · 01/08/2018 08:01

I've had a real issue with this recently. In a creative setting for an oral exam.

Someone gave a wonderful speech, perfectly crafted and inspirational. Top marks. But there were americanisms in the language used and this person was in their 40's. So, is it possible they didn't write their own speech? Or are they so blinded by America that they think people in offices really do work in a cubicle and cash a pay cheque check?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 01/08/2018 08:04

I used to have rows with an old American director over correct UK English usage when I used to copywrite ads and brochures (for a UK firm to UK/international audiences in the UK). She wouldn't have it!

Squeegle · 01/08/2018 08:23

I don’t like “I am pissed”, it means something very different in English. I like to keep a little bit of our individuality, I know language evolves but it feels a bit painful if we are taken over by a culture we don’t particularly admire.

Peakypush · 01/08/2018 08:35

ushuaiamonamour I have friends from Connemara and different parts of Clare who say "Mom". I questioned my Galway friend the first time I heard it and she just shrugged and said that's what they've always called their mum.

lightonthewater · 01/08/2018 08:35

I do agree that I think less reading and watching American TV is largely to blame.
I also can't bear 'Can I get'
Come by, instead of come round.
Closet instead of wardrobe.
Store instead of shop
Apartment instead of flat
I agree about the use of 'ass' sounds awful. I think it just sounds vulgar and i have never heard anyone in real life say this.
The general dropping of prepositions in sentences.

I know language evolves, but this isn't really evolving, it's copying. We are imitating another culture than devolved from our own, which seems odd.

Cyclingpast · 01/08/2018 08:37

I agree with you OP.

If you watch something on TV it's a programme, not a "show". Dispatches or Eastenders (for example) are not shows. But I suppose the X-factor could be called a show.

Zoflorabore · 01/08/2018 08:39

waffledoggy- so does mine! She is 7, I totally blame YouTube Grin

She also says dresser for drawers and a million other things that she has picked up.

Her 15yr old brother was annoying her the other day and she said "enough already" which made me laugh.

It's just a sign of the times.

Dapplegrey · 01/08/2018 08:40

I noticed that one went from shopping in Kings Rd to shopping on Kings Rd almost overnight.

sonlypuppyfat · 01/08/2018 08:41

This winds me up as well, DD said get in the line last week I nearly disowned her
