Ok it looks good on tv but they must have to do re takes and it's probably a really long evening.

Also no-one EVER looks at the camera - I'm sure they're told not to but I'd be soooooooo tempted to give the odd sarcastic look at the audience! Lol.

Anyone have any behind the scenes secrets?

I enjoyed the first few series when it was actually about cooking and entertaining. Then it turned into just another boring crappy reality TV series, so I stopped watching.

BedtimeTea · 01/08/2018 02:06

When a mumsnetter was on CDWM years ago, somebody from mumsnet gave her a brownie recipe, which I copied down. It was really good, but I lost it when my relic desktop died. If you are reading this...I would love it if you would please post the recipe for me!
(I suppose I could advance search for it. But she should be in this thread, she had some good stories from her experience)

DappledThings · 01/08/2018 06:39

My friend was on it. They insisted he cook one element of it hours early when he knew that would ruin it. Which it did.

And yes it's very late nights.

5000KallaxHoles · 01/08/2018 06:44

Relative was serving a year as mayor and got approached to be on it. He can cook nowt more than toast and his wife threatened to kill him if he went on it so he didn't.

TheOxymoron · 01/08/2018 07:02

I had to give up watching it. It makes me want to eat.
I ate through the starter, I ate through the main and then was hunting for sweet stuff.
No.... it had to go.

ciderhouserules · 01/08/2018 07:11

I watched a couple of the German series' when I lived in Germany (and they filmed in the small city I lived in, but I didn't know anyone) and it was totally different! No snide remarks, the food was restaurant standard, no one got drunk, and there was very little conversation!

Was altogether a much 'nicer' program (not as much fun tho! Grin)

Frankwindsor · 01/08/2018 07:17

I loved it when it started because, as others have said, it was more about the cooking and often people were nice and natural to each other. It has changed into the narrator sneering at the people, and everyone being horrible about every else. I have stopped watching it now.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 01/08/2018 07:18

I've seen the Persian version and its quite funny too. Not as catty as the UK one has become.

ClashCityRocker · 01/08/2018 07:39

My friend was on it.

Yep they certainly heavily influence the conversation and shit stir by dropping hints as to what other contestants had said. They also do it blatantly 'so, x, why don't you tell Y why you absolutely detested her starter?'

They also made her cook things at the wrong times. And recook things to get a decent shot - which made it difficult to prepare something tasty.

She was on it last year, so this may be a recent thing, but they were very strict on how much they had to drink - just a welcome drink and no more than two glasses of wine. They wouldn't let them have shots. They said this was because the evening went on too long otherwise - but they were still filming into the early hours.

The taxi goes round the block when you give your score, and then you go back and wait for a normal taxi to pick you up. Some of her fellow contestants lived up to sixty miles away.

Also, because of this, the food is pretty much all cold by the time you serve it but you're told you aren't allowed to score them down because of it, which is fair enough.

They also told her what props to buy from her own money but I think they give her an allowance of about £150 to go towards food and wine.

She was on an hour long show, so whilst they all had to have entertainment, this was only shown for one of the contestants.

She enjoyed doing it but was a bit disappointed with how she was portrayed - partly her own fault though as it was clear what the producers had cast her as and she did play up to it!

Churrolicious · 01/08/2018 07:41

I think it went the way of Big Brother - the first few series were glorious looks at how people from different walks of life got on when they met (with the bonus of some cooking thrown in) but as the series went on it was more about conflict and scripting 'stories'.

One of our town's local councillors was on it a couple of weeks ago and talked a bit about the process www.henleystandard.co.uk/news/home/128831/not-so-easy-peasy.html

Padparadscha · 01/08/2018 07:51

Tbh I only watch come dine with me for the narrator he is hilarious

He now narrates the new Danger Mouse series as well, of all things.

I know someone who went on it, they had their mum prep all the food. Bloody won it an all.

AgathaF · 01/08/2018 07:51

The MNer who was on it a few years ago provided a lot of entertaining insight.

It looks so fake now. I really can't be bothered watching it any more.

longwayoff · 01/08/2018 08:22

I did love cdwm in its early incarnation when it focused more on the cooking but now its full of look at me lets talkabout me people its become tiresome.

fanfan18 · 01/08/2018 08:40

We stopped watching CDWM and moved on to Four in a Bed, it's brilliant sometimes

Ionlylookatthepictures · 01/08/2018 08:50

Loved the early days circa 14 years ago iirc. But hate it now, it’s so naff and fake. Reading these comments, I couldn’t imagine much worse than being a contestant!

BlueTears · 01/08/2018 09:03

Oh wow, so many replies!
Really interesting.
I was thinking of applying but thinking better of it now, lol!

Killerqueen2244 · 01/08/2018 09:06

My sister’s friend was on it and he had said they’ve only got 1 camera so that doesn’t help with the timings! It also meant if one of the contestants said something but it was missed by the camera they had to stop and retake, which I can imagine looks quite scripted now we’re all a bit cynical towards reality tv!

HemanOrSheRa · 01/08/2018 09:11

I bloody love Come Dine With Me and Four In A Bed. My favourite thing to do of a Saturday afternoon is to binge watch them on More 4 Grin.

One of my friends was in one of the first episodes many years ago. She had an amazing time and absolutely loved it.

yawning801 · 01/08/2018 09:22

Watching with interest as I watch it occasionally and have thought that is going downhill recently. I had a friend many moons ago whose dad was approached to be on it but he'd heard so much about it by then that he didn't want to be on it!

Bluelonerose · 01/08/2018 10:01

4 in a bed I think would be better if they didn't know about the others comments till the end of the week when they announce the winner. There's too much game playing.

PaulRuddislush · 01/08/2018 10:14

A lot of the contestants used to post on digital spy. I remember one saying they got £250 budget which is quite reasonable but filming and cooking was a nightmare, they couldn't put the dishwasher on because the crew said it was too noisy and piles of dirty pots were driving them mad.

ThePrioryGhost · 01/08/2018 10:18

My friend was on it a few years ago. She is a bit pretentious but she’s good hearted - needless to say they really amped up the pretension with the editing and she practically got death threats on the Facebook page!

blueskypink · 01/08/2018 10:18

Tbh I only watch come dine with me for the narrator he is hilarious

What?!!! He's SO bloody irritating and unfunny!!!

ThePrioryGhost · 01/08/2018 10:19

I do always wonder though - why do so many of them claim, “I’ve never made this before, this is my first time, so fingers crossed”?

It must be horseshit, surely. I mean, sure you might pick something impressive to try, but you’d practice the hell out of it before cooking it on television, no??!

Frosty6611 · 01/08/2018 10:21

My brother is a camera man on it. Sometimes it doesn’t wrap up until 6am as they have to do so many takes for everything. The contestants can often storm off and go into huffs and have to be talked back by a member of crew which can take a lot of time
