To wonder if I should try to get a summer job

Dh is off so wouldn’t need childcare, and finances are pretty dire.

But the thought makes me feel so down.

Has anyone done this

Rather hard to say. Can you explain a bit more about your situation eg do you work normally, why does the thought make you feel down

MarthasGinYard · 30/07/2018 12:30

Why just a 'summer job'?

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 12:31

Just a summer job because I can’t afford to work usually, two under twos. But dh is off.

Are you able to pick fruit? It doesn't pay spectacularly well and can be physical, but I did it a few summers ago and it was great exercise and I even made some friends.

MarthasGinYard · 30/07/2018 12:32

If money is tight then yes, make hay whilst the sun shines.

EmeraldVillage · 30/07/2018 12:32

Ok so this is an opportunity to support your family. Why wouldn’t you?

PotteringAlong · 30/07/2018 12:32

I think unless you work in a massive holiday place then the concept of a summer job doesn’t really exist any more. And if you do, you should have applied and started ages ago.

EmeraldVillage · 30/07/2018 12:32

given that money is tight. Unless there is more you’re not saying.

PotteringAlong · 30/07/2018 12:33

Could you not work in the evenings when your DH is Home? (I’m assuming teacher as he’s off all summer)

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 30/07/2018 12:34

As PP have said, fruit picking is about the only thing you could get now - you've left it quite late for a summer job to be honest - kids going back to school in a month!

MarthasGinYard · 30/07/2018 12:36

Bar work?
Waitressing?
What did you have in mind

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 30/07/2018 12:36

Could you get yourself back into the job market on a permanent basis? That would have better long term prospects. Home care companies always want people who can work evenings and week-ends.

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 12:37

I actually would struggle to pick fruit, I have a bad back.

Dh is only off for August.

I could work in the evenings but then kids all day and work in the evenings ... I think I’d be dead.

OP posts:
NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 30/07/2018 12:39

What did you do before kids?

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 12:40

I worked with children actually Smile

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 30/07/2018 12:40

Brilliant!!!! Can you do that again? How about child minding?

Musicalmistress · 30/07/2018 12:41

I know the idea of kids all day then work in the evenings is tough but lots of people do it - needs must to support the family.

ChairinSage · 30/07/2018 12:43

You could try signing up with an agency and see what you get. I've worked in distribution centres and factories, and we've relied upon temporary labour to get through the summer period. It might only be packing or order picking but money is money.

Not sure why the thought depresses you, but I found the temporary packing job cheered me immensely - it was time away from the kids so gave me some headspace and time to be an adult, plus I lost a couple of kilos and earnt cash towards clearing some of our massive debts. I actually stayed on for 9 years with one company and managed several promotions after starting a 4 week contract...

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 12:49

I don’t think I could register to childmind in a month! Grin

MarthasGinYard · 30/07/2018 12:50

So what were you thinking of Op?

Raver84 · 30/07/2018 12:51

You should be working if you need the money. I work evenings and it's fine not sure what there is to dread about it? it gives me some time away from home as well as doing a job I really love.

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 12:51

I am a bit uninspired which is why I came on here.

Sign up for a local temp agency and see what's around. Can't hurt to look, can it?

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 12:53

Thanks.
