To wonder if I should try to get a summer job

Dh is off so wouldn’t need childcare, and finances are pretty dire.

But the thought makes me feel so down.

You're being a little bit negative tbh. Can't pick fruit, can't childmind, can't work evenings. Next you'll be telling us you can't drive lol.

So what WOULD be feasible?

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 12:56

Well, I genuinely can’t pick fruit. I did have a pretty serious injury once.

I don’t want to sound rude but I would have thought it was obvious I can’t register to child mind, get set up, get clients, in one month!

Why don't you sign up with a babysitting agency then you can do it int he evenings but it shouldn't be too taxing as they will presumably go to bed. It would take a few weeks to get started as you would need DRB check etc but could be a good earner I expect.

SheldonSaysSo · 30/07/2018 12:59

What about offering holiday childcare as a babysitter/nanny? Just ad-hoc days for parents, you have experience as a parent and I assume from before working in childcare.

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 13:01

Yes could do but we’d struggle a bit to afford a DBS check to be honest, I looked at caring roles and had the same problem. I suppose when you’re broke it’s easy to feel I should be working, but working can be expensive.

MarthasGinYard · 30/07/2018 13:01

Sign up for temp work you may get warehouse type work or seasonal fill in stuff.

I'd personally try and get some evening work you might enjoy the break

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 30/07/2018 13:02

I know you can't register to child mind in just one month, but you could register and continue to do it year round. If financies are dire, as you say, then another income all year round would be really helpful wouldn't it?

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 13:03

Well, not really, it’s not practical because of where we live and other issues. Thanks, though.

JustHereForThePooStories · 30/07/2018 13:05

If your financial situation is “pretty dire”, you’re not really in a position to be fussy, are you? You need to support your family. If you find evening work now, your husband will be able to do the lion’s share of childminding during the day, and by the time he goes back to work, you’ll be in more of a routine and able to manage.

It does sound like you don’t want to work, though.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 30/07/2018 13:06

Mystery shopping
Cleaning
Ironing Service
Sex chat line Wink

Would any of those work?

EmeraldVillage · 30/07/2018 13:07

Oh Come on Op, there are many potential lines of enquiry eg

Bar work
Restaurant work
Shop woro

PotteringAlong · 30/07/2018 13:07

Does your DH work weekends? How about a Saturday job? Places like McDonald’s have people who just work weekends.

rose69 · 30/07/2018 13:08

Local councils are looking for people to knock on doors and sign people up to the electoral register. Weekend and evening work as it's when people are in

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 13:08

I know. I’ve thought about bar or restaurant work but most want a CV and experience.

Grandmaswagsbag · 30/07/2018 13:09

Find a good local events catering company, who do weddings etc. They pay well and it’s seasonal. You could make a nice bit extra with even one shift on a saturday. They pay well as well, at least they do round here.

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 13:10

Thanks. What should I type into google for that? Blush

Babyroobs · 30/07/2018 13:11

as someone who has spent 10 years looking after 4 kids all day then going to work on a nightshift, I think you would survive doing a few hours at an evening job. otherwise you could look at what help there is with childcare from tax credits or Universal credit.

Deshasafraisy · 30/07/2018 13:12

Any local hotels? Guest houses? Can usually pick up some hours there.

Deshasafraisy · 30/07/2018 13:13

Sign up as an “extra” for tv work.

Deshasafraisy · 30/07/2018 13:13

Ironing service?

treesandplants · 30/07/2018 13:13

No help from benefits which is fine.

I’ve also done the night shift thing from 2014 to last Christmas and I am not exaggerating, it nearly killed me. Honestly.

Dog walker

FlyingMonkeys · 30/07/2018 13:14

Avon rep, paper round. Have a good clear out and do a car boot sale for immediate cash.

PolkerrisBeach · 30/07/2018 13:15

Thanks. What should I type into google for that?

Bloody hell. Do you want us to fill in the application form and go to the interviews for you too?

Jobs do not drop out of the sky into your lap. You need a bit of common sense and good old fashioned NOUSE. How can a grown adult be SO lacking in initiative and common sense??

BishopstonFaffing · 30/07/2018 13:16

DH signed up with 5 agencies. Took him all day as he did all their forms on the spot but he working within 24 hours. Just remember to take passport or similar and NI number with you. Dress tidily, be friendly and smile. Most agencies pay weekly so you could have money in your pocket really soon.

It would definitely be worth you working although I understand why you want to spend the summer at home with your family. Maybe you could do 3 weeks then spend the last week having nice day trips using a bit of your earnings?
