AIBU to be worried - 38 °C!

AIBU to be worried about our upcoming trip. DH has planned a surprise weekend break for my birthday next weekend. He doesn't want to tell me where he is but he's told me the weather forecast so I can pack. It's 34°C on Friday, 35 on Saturday, and 38 on Sunday!!!

I'm really worried. He has promised me there will be A/C in the room but he won't tell me anything else. I haven't told him how worried I am because I don't want to hurt his feelings but...38°!!!

So ...where could it be? I'm thinking south of Spain somewhere. I know it's in Europe. And should I go WIBU to own up to being worried and just refuse?

I don't know if there will be a pool. He told me when he booked it that it's a city break.

We were in Vienna a couple of years ago in 38c+ heat, which was uncomfortable especially as many of the old city centre buildings there don't have air con.
We went out early before it got too hot, then came back on the air conditioned tube and chilled at our air conditioned hotel next to the river.
Wherever you are going, you will have a great time I'm sure.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 29/07/2018 14:34

I guess we will have to stay in the hotel room from 11-3 and take siesta, mostly go out in the mornings and evenings.

Nah - you really don't need to! If it's somewhere that's used to being hot; it'll be fine. You don't need to be inside even if it's not. Just make sure you drink enough and apply sun cream regularly.

Maliali · 29/07/2018 14:34

Do you have any problems around intolerance to heat? If so I totally get your concern. I have dysautonomia and can’t regulate my body temp so overheat and sweat to a ridiculous degree and feel ill.

I got something called a cool towel off Amazon and it’s great. You dampen it then wear it like a scarf or a bandana and when it starts to feel a bit warm, you give it a snap and it feels cold again. Drink Loads and loads of water, wear linen or thin cotton clothes, sunblock and seek out all shade and hopefully you’ll still be able to have a good holiday.

fairgame84 · 29/07/2018 14:36

It was 38 last time I was in Spain. It did not feel too bad. We managed to go on a sightseeing tour and were fine, DS was 10 and managed fine. It won't be as bad as it would be in the UK.

LighthouseSouth · 29/07/2018 14:42

why don't you ask him for more information?

HappyStripper · 29/07/2018 14:43

That’s really not that worrying a temperature... it’s been 38 or over for 2-3 months here in Texas and people get on with it without all dropping dead of heat stroke. Yes it’s hot and you may need to take that into account with some of your plans for the middle of the day but suggesting you’d refuse to go is honestly ridiculous when someone has planned a nice trip for you.

TheShapeOfEwe · 29/07/2018 14:43

Pack a good sunscreen and a hat, make sure you drink plenty and have a fab time!

Heatiskillingme · 29/07/2018 14:46

My guess is Rome!

I'm going next Monday and similar forecast for the 5 days I'm there!

Mistigri · 29/07/2018 14:47

A city break in 38 degree heat will be hard work unless you plan your days to make the most of the early morning and late evening (relatively) cool hours.

Look for air conditioned things to do - art galleries are often cool!

It may not actually be 38 - I live in southern France and my iPhone weather app routinely adds several degrees to the more moderate and more correct Météo-France forecast.

MardAsSnails · 29/07/2018 14:49

A hat, lightweight clothing, and a bottle
Of water with you and you’ll be fine.

Mistigri · 29/07/2018 14:49

And how unbearable it feels will depend on the humidity and the night time temperatures - though if you have air con the hot nights shouldn't worry you.

I'd want to know where I was going tbh.

KatharinaRosalie · 29/07/2018 14:51

You go out morning and evening and hide indoors with A/C when it's hottest. Honestly you'll be fine.

HotDamnItsHot · 29/07/2018 14:51

I live in Spain.
My next week looks like this,
34
35
36
37
37
37
37

People like us that live here do not go out between 10.30 and 4.

colditz · 29/07/2018 14:52

I personally wouldn't accept this. I don't like surprises like this, they aren't fun surprises, they're shocks.

I would ask him precisely where we are going, I'd research the local area and if he wouldn't tell me, I wouldn't pack. Because I wouldn't go.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 29/07/2018 14:52

I know where you are coming from - I would hate a city break in 38 degree heat. Actually I wouldn't love that temperature even lolling beside a pool.

However it's lovely that he's booked it, and in the circumstances I'd grin and bear it. It's only 3 days, and if you can't face schlepping around in the hot part of the day you can probably lure him back to the hotel for some air conditioned romance.

HotDamnItsHot · 29/07/2018 14:53

Night time between 22-24.

Aircon in hotel room, you lucky bugger.

colditz · 29/07/2018 14:53

Oh, it's a city break?

No, thank you. I woulldn't go. Maybe he knows you would enjoy that sort of thing though?

LighthouseSouth · 29/07/2018 14:55

@HotDamnItsHot

"People like us that live here do not go out between 10.30 and 4."

but what happens about people having to go to different places for work e.g motorcycle couriers. if you work as a gardener or any other outside role is it normal to just work outside of these hours?

I get that you could sit in an air conditioned office at these times but for other jobs..?

ProperLavs · 29/07/2018 14:55

You'll be fine- its not like having heat in England when we're not equipped for it and have to work anyway. The last 2 countries I've been to in August have had temps in the late 40's.

HotDamnItsHot · 29/07/2018 15:00

LighthouseSouth A gardener or courier would not be working in the hottest part of the day, they just wouldn't. When you live here you know and understand that. Places open between 9-2 then close and open again 5.30-8.30.

The streets are like a ghost town mid day.

HotDamnItsHot · 29/07/2018 15:02

Also a lot of workplace have reduced hours in July and August. An extra 30/60 minutes daily in the winter allows this. Government departments and some other businesses close in August.

lazyminimoo · 29/07/2018 15:02

I would be worried an unless it defiently had ac inside the room I wouldnt go for sure id not go, if it was too hot outside id stay in the whole time in the air con , I cant stand hot weather I wouldnt be able to force myself to go walking around in hot weather

BrokenWing · 29/07/2018 15:04

A city break with 38 degree heat? I'd be worried too and asking what the cancellation policy was! I like to get out an about on holiday so would be worried about spending all that money and either being very hot and uncomfortable outside or going all that way to just sit in a air conditioned luxury prison hotel all day.

Temperature here has dropped to 16 degrees today, bliss! 18-19 without rain and I would be happy.

THEsonofaBITCH · 29/07/2018 15:05

Confused When I worked in roofing we were required to work from 7am-3:30pm weather be damned. We took a thermometer up with us and hottest recording in the shade was 48.9 Hmm
