Bathroom comes with the house??!!

greencygnets · 29/07/2018 12:10

So DH and I have just bought a new house (not brand new but new to us :)) and it cost us a lot of money (far more than a care to admit! :))
We moved in yesterday, the house is perfect except for one thing...

They've taken the bloody bathroom with them!!!!

One of the two main bathrooms upstairs is literally empty, like I don't mean just the furniture which you obviously take with you. But they've taken the bath, sink and shower!!!!

The room is tiled but theres random pipes sticking out of walls where these things should be!! The only thing left is the toilet. I honestly don't know what to do... We were going to redo the bathroom anyway at some point but never told this to anybody and weren't planning to do so until at least November/December time but now we don't have a choice!!

The kids come home from the holiday with my in-laws on Tuesday and we've got no bathroom for them!!!!

AIBU to think that the bathroom comes with the house, or is it totally reasonable to take the bathroom with you to your new house??!!

I felt sorry for a friend who bought a house and moved in to discover all lightbulbs removed, towel rails etc. wrenched off the walls, wall lights removed leaving bare wires. But removing the whole bathroom takes the Biscuit

PyongyangKipperbang · 29/07/2018 12:59

The op said "going into a different county... " not moving country

PigletJohn · 29/07/2018 13:00

Watching with interest.

Under the circumstances you will have to get an installer in a hurry, not much room for bargain-hunting. Try and repaint the ceiling and woodwork while it is empty.

If the pipes are just sticking out of the walls, and the tiles are not damaged, it can be pretty quick to re-install fittings of similar dimensions. Make sure you get good quality taps, wastes and accessories, they make all the difference. Bristan taps and Aqualisa shower. And a WC by an established UK maker, not an unbranded import.

KittyHawke80 · 29/07/2018 13:01

Mea culpa. I read PP about ‘moving abroad’.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/07/2018 13:03

Ah, I misread county too. It should be fairly straightforward getting the money out of them then.

Ellie56 · 29/07/2018 13:04

Looks like you might do quite well out of this OP. Wink

Until you get the bath sorted out OP can you stand in the shower with the 3 year old to wash them and use the kitchen sink to bath the one year old?

TwoBlueShoes · 29/07/2018 13:04

Threads like this make me think our solicitor was particularly amazing.

I fail to see how the solicitors are at fault. The bathroom suite was listed on the F&F so it should be there. The old owners have taken something that they shouldn't have. I'm sure the OP's solicitor will be on it as soon as possible.

SimonBridges · 29/07/2018 13:05

If they have gone abroad have they taken the bathroom furniture with them or sold it.
Have they damaged the tiles and stuff as well?
It’ll be a pain for a while but you will get a much better bathroom out of it in the end.

Maelstrop · 29/07/2018 13:05

That’s staggering! Never heard of this before, I mean, all curtain poles and light fittings, leaving live wires hanging, but the actual bathroom?! My god, they must have loved it!

SimonBridges · 29/07/2018 13:07

Sorry I misread that as country too.
Why does going to a different county mean that you have to move on a Saturday?

ApolloandDaphne · 29/07/2018 13:07

That is bonkers. I rather think they will have to stump up the cost of a new bathroom for you!

confusedmomm · 29/07/2018 13:09

That's fixtures and fittings. Contact solicitor ASAP

Murinae · 29/07/2018 13:12

We lived in Germany for years and it’s completely normal to take the kitchen with you when you move but not the bathroom!

concretesieve · 29/07/2018 13:13

Young 'uns today Grin Grin Grin When I was very small, we didn't have a bathroom!* (No - I'm NOT advocating it Grin)

Seriously, though, I did hear recently of sellers removing a lot of fixtures - the central heating and the kitchen - both appliances and cupboards, but I don't think they went so far as the bathroom! It's world class CFism!

So Flowers and hope it's sorted soon.

  • Outside loo and fixed bath in the kitchen - which had a plughole but no taps.
pennycarbonara · 29/07/2018 13:14

What a bunch of wankpuffins!

Grin marvellous!

PuntCuffin · 29/07/2018 13:14

What country is this in? UK? And were the vendors British?

There are some countries where it is entirely normal to take bathroom sanitary ware when moving. Ok, so the fact that they are listed on the fixtures list means they shouldn't have done so, but if they are from a country where it is normal, it might be a genuine error rather than a malicious act.

AnoukSpirit · 29/07/2018 13:14

they were a little odd, being very very determined that we had to move in on the Saturday, they didn't want to wait until the Monday. They had to be out on Friday and us in on Saturday

And now you know why.

greencygnets · 29/07/2018 13:14

Yeah, just county not country :))
I have no idea why they were so determined that they had to move out on the Friday and us in on Saturday... I wanted to say no we'll move on the monday but DH said it would be easier to do it, giving us the weekend and monday before the kids get home :)
DH is now in charge of getting a hold of the solicitor!! :)

@Ellie56 I think that's what we'll have to do, that or use MIL and FIL's house and just driving the twenty minute journey both ways

@SimonBridges @PigletJohn thankfully the bathroom is in pretty good condition (other than the lack of actual bathroom fixtures...) only the tiles around where the sink was are damaged a little bit.

We were planning on going to a bathroom installer this week but we didn't know the rules on it. Will they have to give us money to buy a bathroom or the actual bathroom back?

SauvignonBlanche · 29/07/2018 13:16

Total CFs! Shock

OVienna · 29/07/2018 13:16

I don't understand this at all. You can't complete on a Saturday surely? Once the house is sold it's yours, as others have said. You'd be insuring them in it and who would do that? All very odd.

OVienna · 29/07/2018 13:17

If your solicitor says this was all ok I'd be very worried.

PeakPants · 29/07/2018 13:18

Threads like this make me think our solicitor was particularly amazing. She went through everything with a fine toothed comb, flagged up issues we would have had no idea about and made sure we got the best deal possible. How is this not the norm?!

Um how would that have helped here? How was the solicitor to know that these idiots would breach the contract and take the things that the contract specified they must leave?

JohnnyKarate · 29/07/2018 13:18

And I felt sorry for us when they had taken all the internal doors 😂

Good luck OP glad you can see the funny side of it

PurpleTigerLove · 29/07/2018 13:21

Fill a baby bath in the shower until you get a bathroom sorted .

We bought a repossessed house a couple of years ago and the owners had taken out the kitchen . I didn’t blame them tbh .

AornisHades · 29/07/2018 13:22

I think they will need to pay for the bathroom to be as good as what was there and described in the particulars. So if the suite was new and expensive with a good quality shower you'd expect that level restored. Make sure you get the pictures and descriptions from Rightmove (or other site) downloaded.
