What are your thoughts?

bossyboots88 that’s horrific. What is wrong with people? Every reputable piercer I’ve ever spoken to says no-one decent in the industry touches under 14’s (apart from ears) I assumed that was widely known Confused

sonlypuppyfat · 28/07/2018 16:48

Disgusting on a child

NameChangingParanoid · 28/07/2018 16:52

I’d probably say 16 but my daughter is only 6 so not got to this stage yet.

I had mine done when I was 19 (& hid it from my parents) & was very surprised at how painless it was.

Aragog · 28/07/2018 16:53

It isn't illegal. Dd had one, done properly.. she just needed parental consent. Three years later she still has it and never had any issues with it at all. Unlike lobes and ears it's bit visible unless she chooses it to be. Most people probably don't know it's there and school certainly didn't:

She likes it. She wanted it and researched into. She's sensible and fairly mature for her age. She wasn't allowed her ears pierced til she was 11 and going into secondary. By she's now had her naval pierced plus a year or so later the top of her ear: I suspect she may have another ear piercing but hates the ones in the face, and she has tiny ears so can't have many other forms of ear piercing done.

If people want to judge that's there choice. Doesn't make Dd a lesser person.

I love piercing threads on MN.

I generally think that with things like that (bright coloured hair, nose piercings, weird clothing) just let teens get on with it because they arent going to be able to do those things as much as an adult... they will have to think about getting jobs etc...

Are we living in the 1950s?? Confused

Me too @JacquesHammer Grin

Had mine done at 13, still have it now at 29.

bluerunningshoes · 28/07/2018 17:04

don't apart from having to remove it for sports at school, it's in a dirty body area and the risk of infection is quite high.

Lazypuppy · 28/07/2018 17:08

Had mine at 14, took it out last year when i got pregnant and haven't put it back in. I looked after it much better than my ears.

If they are responsible enough to look after it then don't see any issue. 1000 x better than tongue piercings which can't be hidden!

LoniceraJaponica · 28/07/2018 17:08

I'm on holiday atm and have seen quite a few - mostly on overweight women. I don't think it is a good look regardless of age. I agree that it is a bit Britney Spears.

MessyBun247 · 28/07/2018 17:11

Got mine done at 16. Aftercare involved twisting it every now and again, and wiping it with salty water to keep it clean. Simple. If DD13 wants hers done in a couple of years I don’t have a problem with it.

And yes, if you take it out as an adult you are left with a small hole. How often do people see your stomach anyway?

A lot of people on here are so snobby and dramatic 🙄

MessyBun247 · 28/07/2018 17:12

‘I'm on holiday atm and have seen quite a few - mostly on overweight women.’

Why mention weight? Should overweight people cover themselves up?

keepingbees · 28/07/2018 17:13

No I wouldn't allow it at that age at all. They are still growing and changing and it would be impractical for sports and p.e. I had mine done at 17 and I regret it now I'm older and have had children the scar looks hideous.

ThomasinaMouse · 28/07/2018 17:16

It's a hole. Having ears pierced is two. Why is having one worse than two? Culturally appropriate?

RavenWings · 28/07/2018 17:17

I am judging big time. School won't be thrilled in September either.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about all those schools that have crop tops as set uniform...

I mean I wouldn't be a fan of navel piercings for a kid that age but really, what a stupid argument. It would be entirely hidden in class.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 28/07/2018 17:17

4 children later....

LoniceraJaponica · 28/07/2018 17:18

You notice it more because the piercing draws your eyes there.

RavenWings · 28/07/2018 17:19

And I've had mine done before. It was completely fine and never had an issue with it - I know some people who've had issues but that's possible with all piercings. However I'd be worried about maintenance of it for a teen that age so it would be a no for now.

amysaurus87 · 28/07/2018 17:21

Had mine done at 15, had to have an adult give permission but that was it. It's not illegal in the UK But under 16 needs parental/guardian permission from what I understand.

I don't regret mine and I still have it in 15 years later! Took it out when I fell pregnant and put it back in about 3 weeks after my LB was born.

As long as she looks after it I see no issue with it

mrsmoppp · 28/07/2018 17:22

They look ok until you gain weight have children. I agree too young though should be at least 16

glintandglide · 28/07/2018 17:23

I don’t think it’s particularly a big deal, bit 1998 though

I would rather my D.C. didn’t have it done though, tbf

Hangingaroundtheportal · 28/07/2018 17:28

I thought the whole point of having your belly button pierced was so that you could show it off by wearing jeans so low slung that you have to shave the top of your pubes and your thong sticks up out the back Smile

Supertiredmummy · 28/07/2018 17:29

I honestly think that's too young. 16 go nuts but 13 ? Nooooo

SendYouUpInFlames · 28/07/2018 17:29

Had mine done at about 11

Yes my mum took me

Yes she lied.

I am much older now. With 2 children.

I had loads of places pierced. Snakebites, tounge, nose, ears belly, you get it.

I have none now. They look tacky and gross.

Wish I never had them done. What a complete waste of money it was.

Strippervicar · 28/07/2018 17:30

Had mine done at 13. I still have it in and used a spacer bar whilst I was pregnant.
I love it and like piercing. I have 22 of them.

Would I send your DD to have one at the same age? Not sure. Is she mature enough not to fiddle with it whilst it is healing. They take a long time to heal, and need to be kept clean. It will rub on her clothes and hurt a bit whilst it is healing.
They use a clamp when the piercer does it. Can look and feel odd. Also you can hear the needle going in.

If she is ok with this. (And you can get your head round it.) Make sure you go to a reputable piercer found in a tattoo studio. I am not sure they'll do it so young. It's 16 with parental consent.
Might be best as an after GCSE treat.
