As far as the student bringing her parents: this was a college nursing program. These students are all adults and there is an expectation of professional behaviour. Once you get a job you don't bring your parents to a meeting with your boss. You can (and should) bring your union steward to ensure that your rights are protected. But not your PARENTS. I could be wrong but I got the impression the meeting was something to do with grades. In this context an academic advisor is someone the student would be seeing to discuss next steps if school is becoming an issue for them or if their grades are poor. That's generally not a meeting your parents should be attending.
