To not be able to boil an egg?!

DuggeeHugg · 26/07/2018 20:36

Literally. I’m not a bad cook. Why does my every attempt at this fail??

Lovely pan of bubbling water. In goes the egg. Press phone timer. Take out egg. Run under cold water. Remove shell.

The fucker is either hard in the middle, or (more often) fucking raw 😡🤬

I have tried all the minutes. All of them. There is no happy medium. Ffs.

I have to egg time above - godsend. Perfect every time and cost me about £2

goingroundandround · 26/07/2018 21:20

You need to put the eggs in right at the start in cold water.
Then leave them in until there’s a rolling boil.
Then time for 3.5 mins from fridge or 3 mins room temp.
I cook eggs every morning and got them to perfection finally!!!

Alarae · 26/07/2018 21:24

I can't cook a bloody jacket potato. I feel your pain Flowers

delphguelph · 26/07/2018 21:27

Blardy Nora this is all interesting.

Omelette instead?

TheShapeOfEwe · 26/07/2018 21:41

Eggs out the fridge, they don't need to be kept in it! Then bring water to a boil, put the egg in, 6 to 6.5 minutes depending on how runny you like it. Perfect!

DuggeeHugg · 26/07/2018 21:42

Ridiculous faff of a process. I’m coming round to the electric one

I have one of those colour-blind egg timer gadgets but didn't get on well with it. I found the difference between a perfect and an awful egg was a fraction of a subdivision on the scale, and could never remember where the sweet spot was. I also found it a pain having to keep looking to see if the eggs were done yet (and I'd get distracted by kids and come back to hard boiled eggs.

Grenoble124 · 26/07/2018 22:14

Room temperature egg. Put in small pot. Bring to boil. Once at a rolling boil coom for 3 minutes 40 seconds. Out and take top off immediately so it stops cooking.

I usually poach for convenience though!

Boil the kettle, plenty of water.Take egg from fridge (5 degrees), prick with egg pricker. Pour boiled water into large saucepan (kept for this purpose). Lower the egg into rolling boiling water, leave for 5 mins while bread is toasting, perfect soft boiled egg every time.

DuggeeHugg · 27/07/2018 00:27

Egg pricker?! What now?!

OP posts:
GrannyHaddock · 27/07/2018 07:13

Yes, get an egg pricker! I think mine was from Lakeland. No more cracked shell and egg white swirling around.

GrannyHaddock · 27/07/2018 07:16

Using plenty of water stops it going off the boil when you put the egg or eggs in so you can time it accurately.

blearyeyedbear · 27/07/2018 07:19

Another vote for this.

Spam88 · 27/07/2018 07:28

I've got one of those little rubber egg things like magicstar posted (although we only ever hard boil so I don't really know why).

Leonard1 · 27/07/2018 07:41

I bought this plastic thing you put in the pan which changes colour to tell you as eggs are cooking if they are soft, medium or hard. Great and very cheap from Amazon. I also bought an egg making machine from Lakeland. Also good but best for more than one person.

Oysterbabe · 27/07/2018 07:45

Wow a lot of people boil their eggs a fair bit longer than I do. The add to cold water and 3 minutes from when it starts to boil works. Or I do 4-5 minutes in boiling water depending on size of egg.

CottonSock · 27/07/2018 07:46

I do 6 to 7 mins for a large egg from fridge. This is for a runny yolk

Scoleah · 27/07/2018 07:48

I put my eggs in Cold water, bring to the Boil, then wait 6 mins, eggs always come out lovely..
It's the peeling the egg I can't do! I'm normally left with just the Yolk! 🙈

AsAProfessionalFekko · 27/07/2018 07:53

Why not poach them? Easier to gauge the runniness of the liquid gold...

cherrytree63 · 27/07/2018 08:03

Prick your room temp egg with a pin.
Place in boiling water
Bring back to boil for one minute.
Turn heat off, place lid on pan and leave for five minutes.

cherrytree63 · 27/07/2018 08:07

And for the PP who can't cook a jacket potato , push a skewer through the raw spud so it cooks from the inside too.
Brush on olive oil and press into crushed sea salt, that crisps the skins.
Bake for 40 ish minutes.
Serve with lashings of butter

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 27/07/2018 08:10

An egg boiler? A fucking machine that boils eggs? I've heard it all now Smile

What you want is a small pot of water. No more complicated than that

IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed · 27/07/2018 08:11

Tip for peeling - crack the shell after boiling. Sit in cold water for a couple of minutes then it practically slides off.

Scoleah · 27/07/2018 08:13

@IllHaveALargeGlassOfRed I'll try this thank you!
