Work colleague commenting on my food

Hi all,

I've worked at my current job for around 4 years, and I enjoy what I do.

This past year, I've avoided eating in the staff kitchen area because of this one woman. She wonders around the office most of the time, and I'll be quietly sitting at a table eating what I want for lunch, almost every time she comments on what I'm eating. Whether it's a meal deal from Sainsbury's, or a McDonald's (I work in the city centre, so loads of food places) and she comments negatively on my food each time. It gets to the point where I just eat my food at my desk.

One time, I was unwell for 3 days and my first day back at work, I wasn't feeling anything heavy. So I went to the shop and got some bread to have toast for lunch as that was the only thing I could keep down. She walks in and comments "oh that's not very nutritious" and gives me a lecture about my eating habits.

Today, I snapped! I had a salad for my lunch and decided to eat in the kitchen, in again she wonders 'that's more like what you should be eating' I told her she needs to stop commenting and she took this to HR to report me.

So my AIBU question is, after all this time of her commenting on what I'm having for lunch, AIBU to tell her not to comment such negative things?

I'm concerned this will be a full complaint against me, because I was quite snappy (but didn't say anything horrible)

X

OMD I hope HR tell her to stop being so nosey!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 25/07/2018 16:09

Dying to find out what HR say. YANBU, LisaDav.

Cagliostro · 25/07/2018 16:09

Wow she's lucky you didn't complain about her first.

sonjadog · 25/07/2018 16:12

I would make a formal complaint about her. She was the one who brought HR into it, so now you continue on from what she’s started.

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv · 25/07/2018 16:12

Seriously though, she's the one that should be reported. I dont think you have much to worry about.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 25/07/2018 16:50

How ridiculous and rude. I can’t believe she’d report YOU.

autumndreaming · 25/07/2018 16:56

I have a colleague who does this. Drives me completely batty, it's absolutely none of their business what I choose to eat for lunch!

JustGettingStarted · 25/07/2018 16:57

I'm just waiting to hear what hr said.

RedDogsBeg · 25/07/2018 16:59

Ask your colleague what business it is of theirs what you have for lunch. Until people say something or do something those who do this will just continue to annoy and make others uncomfortable.

flumpybear · 25/07/2018 17:01

God what an arse! I really hope Human Remains managed to see this for what it really is!

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv · 25/07/2018 17:06

Human Remains ConfusedShockGrin

ThedementedPenguin · 25/07/2018 17:06

Was hoping there would be an update. You can’t still be with HR.

Your colleague sounds nuts. I would have said something a lot sooner.

Noqont · 25/07/2018 17:07

Human remains flumpy? 😂

ApolloandDaphne · 25/07/2018 17:09

She sounds like a right cow. Hope your meeting went okay.

Lynne1Cat · 25/07/2018 17:12

I think YOU should have reported HER. Cheeky fucker, telling you what to eat. She sounds an interfering bitch.

redexpat · 25/07/2018 17:16

I love your comeback.

SilverHairedCat · 25/07/2018 17:31

Ugh, hope HR tell her to wind her neck in and were just checking you're Ok.

Are you ok?

Viviennemary · 25/07/2018 17:38

I agree with going to HR even though it's a trivial matter. You shouldn't feel you can't eat in the staff kitchen and she shouldn't be commenting on what other people eat. She sounds a real pain in the neck and thick skinned.

It's about time someone told her! I hate eating if someone is looking disapprovingly at the food.

funnylittlefloozie · 25/07/2018 18:00

I have a lady like this in my office! If she doesnt like the look of whatever you're eating, she sems to feel obliged to comment on it, accompanied by very juvenile expressions of disgust;

"Ewww, that looks horrible>"
"Ugh, that stinks"
"Urrr, that doesnt look nice at all!"

Eventually i got so fed up with her rudeness, I stared at her silently for about 15 seconds and then used my most patronising tone to tell her that we don't make rude remarks about other people's food in this deprtment, because we are all grown-ups. Didnt go down well and she did grumble to my line manager aobut me, but he agreed with me that her constant comments were unacceptable.

rollingonariver · 25/07/2018 18:03

She sounds like a drama queen, hope all went okay with HR !

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 25/07/2018 18:14

Hope it got sorted - I cannot imagine why she thought it was in any way justofied to report you. Hurt ego i suppose.

Strawberry2017 · 25/07/2018 19:08

How did the meeting go?
She's got a nerve and it's got nothing to do with her what you eat, I hate people who think they can constantly comment on food.
Well don't for lasting so long, I don't blame you for snapping! X

M00nUnit · 25/07/2018 20:27

Update please OP! How was the meeting?
