My milkman just woke me up

milkmilk · 25/07/2018 01:15

It's 1am and my milkman just woke me up. Now I can't sleep as all I can think about is my milk warming up (and my husband hasn't put the bin out yet at they come at 7am).

Aibu to make my husband get up and sort now?

Should I complain to the milkman?

For full disclosure; Children currently sleeping until 8am due to heat. I'm on mat leave. Husband doesn't set an alarm he relies on me. Toddler bedroom is next to the bin path. Husband awake looking at phone (probably Mumsnet)

We have our milk delivered. I live in London.

kaytee87 · 25/07/2018 06:38

My neighbours milk delivery woke me at 4am the other morning Sad
I'm thinking if I can't beat them I'll join them though. We're trying to reduce our plastic use anyway.

PaintedHorizons · 25/07/2018 06:48

London - and have had milk delivered for over 20 years. Usually left somewhere around 4-5am. I'm up by 6 or 7 latest. Perfect. Always have milk.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 25/07/2018 06:49

I have just started having milk delivered - he comes at 12.30 am! I will give it a few weeks but if the neighbours comment on the noise or the dog starts to bark, I will have to give it up. It is nice to have things delivered though - saves lugging the plastic containers back from the supermarket - he brings orange juice in a glass bottle which is lovely!

Milk delivered in our street in SW London - 4.30ish in an electric float. Only DH uses dairy milk, and then not much, so we don’t get it but I don’t think there’s a theft problem as we are not really a pedestrian route in the early hours.

AltheaorDonna · 25/07/2018 07:07

When I did a milk round, ohhhh, thirty years ago in small town NI we had very occasional thefts. And sometimes (rarely) the milk would curdle, but we always left it in the shade where possible, and a lot of people had little milk boxes with a lid. The lid was most useful, because the biggest problem really was birds pecking the tops off, some of them could be amazingly sneaky! As for milkmen delivering at antisocial hours, most of them have huge rounds. We used to start at 3 and finish around 11, people used to moan whatever time we left it! But most people understood we had a route, and not everyone can get their delivery at 6.30 am. I actually loved that job, I reckon I could still remember some of the route. Grin. And the xmas tips were amazing! Grin.

DH was a milkman for 10 years until 2 years ago.
He started delivery by midnight and finished by 6 am. As they were all self employed it was entirely up to them what time they started their rounds.

Those of you thinking you can choose a delivery time - they are not like Santa. They can't be everywhere at the same time!

ciderhouserules · 25/07/2018 07:12

Why ar people so surprised at a milkman? Google MilkandMore and find out if you are on a round.

I get milk and orange juice, and cheese and they also do offers of stuff (biscuits, loo rolls, dog food, all sorts - esp at christmas when you can get chocolates and goodies with your extra cream and cheeses) - and it keeps person in work. It's more expensive, but saves me running out of milk.

OP you can get a milk Cooler type thing to sit on your doorstep that the Milkman puts the bottles in, in this weather. It also stops the birds pecking the tops.

milkmilk · 25/07/2018 07:17

Off to google doorstep milk cooler....I was contemplating leaving a wine bucket filled with ice!

Why was it down to your husband to bring the milk in rather than you? You were up playing on your phone just as much as he was.

milkmilk · 25/07/2018 07:19

Bin men are here!! My heroes, about to empty my maggot filled food and garden waste bin. 🤢

They normally find the energy to wave at my 3 yo too, if he's up!

milkmilk · 25/07/2018 07:21

He's in charge of bins. I wouldn't go as far as phobia but bin juice proper freaks me out!

He'd already got up, put shorts on and gone to the front of the house - why wouldn't you just grab the milk too?

Back on the what should we bring back....

Penny sweets. 20p and you could select 20 different sweets. I still go in the corner shop where I did this as a kid and look at the boring chocolate bars that are where the penny sweets used to live.

theres a reason that milkman delivery died out.
milk needs to be kept cold.

furrymuff · 25/07/2018 07:34

Round here we have a milk machine, is amazing! The milk comes from the cows in the field across the road. You put a pound in and get your 1 litre glass bottle, you then put another pound in and it fills the bottle with fresh pasteurised milk. You can then wash out and reuse your bottles. It tastes heavenly and you can go and fill up any time of day or night Grin

QueenoftheNights · 25/07/2018 07:43

I think some milkmen deliver so early so they can also have another day job.

You can buy special 'keep cool' containers for milk- or used to be able to- to insulate them from the heat.

Or you could just do an online delivery like everyone else and have it arrive at a time of your choice :)

Mol1628 · 25/07/2018 07:46

Our milkman comes about half five. I’m always awake but I never hear him. Nor does the dog and she hears everything and warning barks. Don’t know how he does it.

wanderings · 25/07/2018 07:46

Perhaps we should blame scary housewives such as Hyacinth Bucket for the nocturnal deliveries.

Milkman (to his teenage assistant): "That's the house, the lair of the dragon lady. We get up early so we can deliver her milk without getting caught."
Teenager: "I'll take it to the door."
Milkman: "No. I promised your mum I'd keep you safe."

Nowadays they have the Mumsnetters to be scared of. "Keep very quiet when you deliver the milk, or you'll be mentioned on Mumsnet".

Lollypop27 · 25/07/2018 07:48

We stopped ours as it kept curdling. We came home one night late (about 1am) and it was already on the doorstep!

Apparently he now delivers later but my teenagers get through a 6 Pinter a day and I just can’t afford it now.

EleanorLavish · 25/07/2018 07:49

My milkman retired a year ago and we have a new guy. The milk gets delivered the night before, at about 9pm. Which is handy as can then bring it in-if you remember!

raindropsandsunshine · 25/07/2018 07:49

I'm just re-starting deliveries, I bloody hope he's not here at 1am!

CaMePlaitPas · 25/07/2018 07:56

I am so shocked people still get their milk delivered! How wonderful! I can understand why you're annoyed that he woke you up although I'm sure he didn't mean to. Gosh, I'd love to get my milk delivered...

OhHolyJesus · 25/07/2018 07:57

Gosh first world problems!

We get milk deliveries too and it's changed my life. I hardly ever go to the supermarket.

He's there so early as he's doing his job and might have a big area to cover.

A cooler is a good idea - might nick that one x

OrgyOfBarminess · 25/07/2018 08:09

My MIL is a milk lady and she normally sets off for her milk round at 2am, it can take between 5-6 hours. She's been going earlier so that her customers don't get warm milk and has had to adjust where she leaves it at some people's houses so it's not in the sun.

If it's a regular occurrence I'd complain if they're waking u up however my DH helped her out on a new round and he had an accident outside someone's house due to a step and ended up smashing bottles into his hands, he ended up having surgery to remove a three inch piece of glass. They finished the round THEN went back to clean up the garden because MIL was worried the customer would be angry! Luckily they didn't 😂

She does get some fair grief though if she makes a mistake, she's had shitty notes left that have simply said 'you've given us semi not full fat WATCH IT!'

She out in all weathers and winter can be particularly bad as well especially with snow and ice on untreated surfaces she's nearly had a few squeaky bum slides.

Can I suggest a cool box or something for it to go in if your worried about it getting too hot just for whilst it's so warm? Hope u get it sorted

MaureenMLove · 25/07/2018 08:21

I love the convenience of my milkman. We still have the proper floats too, so although I know he delivers at silly o'clock, he never wakes me up.

I've had to switch to plastic containers just recently though. The foxes around these parts, kept getting in to the bottles. They got so experienced, they could tip the bottle enough to get half of it and leave the rest! I knew it was foxes, not birds, because they'd leave their calling card pile of shit next to it too! Bastards.

Gutted, I've had to change to plastic, because I'm far more convinced that the milky recycles my bottles, more than the council doing the plastic. Still at least I've foxed, those foxes. Grin
