to wish my name wouldn't always come up in the baby names threads?

NC for this. My name always comes up in the baby names threads. Always as 'dated' or 'common' or 'chavvy' etc etc. Sick of seeing my name slagged off and I never felt down about it until mn. To the point that I have hidden the baby names threads and never read them, even though we are currently trying to think of a name for DC1. AIBU to think that we don't think of these things when we slag off other people's names on the internet? That people actually have these names? Sad

Oh there’s always someone with a salty opinion on here, apparently my ds has a dog’s name (two actually, first and middle - double or quits) and my dd’s name is ‘try hard’

Take comfort that irl no one sees names as an abstract concept - whatever name you choose, rl people will just associate it with your lovely little baby and be pleased for you and happy and excited to meet them. Everyone loves a new little person. Don’t let it spoil your pregnancy. I am so glad i never got properly into mn till my eldest was nearly one. God the things i would have turned myself inside out fretting over.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 24/07/2018 10:21

Someone saying a name is chavvy says far more about them then it does about the person with that name

I had a funny foreign name now apparently it’s a lovely name Hmm

FeralBeryl · 24/07/2018 10:22

@QueenOfMyWorld Grin it's Emma round here. One class at DD's school has got 7 mums called Emma. Winner when trying to learn all their names in reception!

Mousefunky · 24/07/2018 10:23

Some names never go out of fashion. I got curious one night when bored and looked back at name trends over the years, I went as far back as Elizabethan times. William, Henry and James have never disappeared from the top twenty.

Other names do sadly come and go. I was born in the late eighties and went to school with lots of Sarah’s, Jennifer’s, Gemma’s, Bethany’s, Jordan’s, Jade’s etc. My name was very uncommon at the time, I was one of two in my secondary school year and I went to a huge secondary school with 2000 pupils. Now it’s quite common and you can actually find my names on things in shops Grin, I wanted nothing more as a child!

FeralBeryl · 24/07/2018 10:25

@Mousefunky no one will know our pain at turning the pencils and rulers stand round desperately looking for our name on holidays! Grin

AlphaBravo · 24/07/2018 10:25

You're called Esme or Alfie aren't you OP? Get a deedpoll quick.

MrsJayy · 24/07/2018 10:26

Dd1s year at school you couldn't move for Amy's every other girl was Amy they are all mid 20s and are probably fed up of hearing their name 😀

ShirleyPhallus · 24/07/2018 10:28

The worst thing about baby name threads is all the unnecessary apostrophes all over the place:

“At school we had loads of Michelle’s, Louise’s, Rebecca’s, Lucy’s”

QueenOfMyWorld · 24/07/2018 10:30

FeralBeryl I sometimes wish I had a more exotic name but hey ho

FeralBeryl · 24/07/2018 10:32

I think Sarah is a beautiful name! It was certainly one of my 'why didn't you call me that' ones as a young un. It means Princess too doesn't it? Which I was convinced I was...

Lotuslots · 24/07/2018 10:39

So my name is Tracey. Should I be feeling shit about now?

LagunaBubbles · 24/07/2018 10:39

I guarantee that if you gathered a random group of 30 English women aged between 50 and 70, at least 3 will be called Sue! You'll also be bound to have a Pat amongst them, a Val, a Linda, an Amanda a Jacqueline, a couple of Carols and a pair of Jans!

Im 47 and youve listed my name Grin

daffodillament · 24/07/2018 10:39

So do we know the name yet ? As long as it doesn't end in 'eesha' you're ok ! Grin

Hangingaroundtheportal · 24/07/2018 10:42

I think the OP is called Kelly. I quite like it Smile

jarhead123 · 24/07/2018 10:44

I'm guessing Chantelle

daffodillament · 24/07/2018 10:44

Kelly is lovely !

CiaoBellaCiao34 · 24/07/2018 10:48

Stevie Nicks?

I have a very old Irish name with an unusual spelling. No one can pronounce it and no one can spell it. It’s a pain in the bum.
I have given dd a very simple name as a result. Smile

KitKatCHA · 24/07/2018 10:54

I have a very typical 80s name, most commonly used as a middle name though Wink

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 24/07/2018 10:57

Nah not Kelly. She’s too young for Kelly!

LoisWilkerson1 · 24/07/2018 10:58

I have a name that has been described as being too '80's Essex tart'Hmm I live in a rural Scottish village and wear wellies so wtf do they knowGrin

Maliali · 24/07/2018 11:02

I’d not give it any more head space. Mine usually comes up as an example of boring names. You are more than just your name. All my friends, like me, have rather boring, dated sounding names what with us being late 50s/early 60s. But when I think of each of them I think of their qualities as people and funny conversations we’ve had, what they are doing/going through etc. Their names really really don’t matter or really register. I’d love them the same whether they were called something unusual and beautiful rather than somethIng rather dated and unremarkable.

DammitOedipus · 24/07/2018 11:06

Based on MN, my name is horrifically American and chavvy. God forbid. In real life, I get complimented all the time on my name, as it isn't particularly common in the UK.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 24/07/2018 11:09

x2boys DD has a friend in her class called Lilly-Mae who doesn't care if people call her Lilly, in fact, she writes it on the front of all her exercise books. My name gets shortened to one syllable all the time, and I prefer it.

1moreRep · 24/07/2018 11:13

count yourself lucky i found out my name means blowjob or lady bits!!!!

happypoobum · 24/07/2018 11:15

I don't understand the point of this thread without the OPs name Confused

I love my name (am in my fifties) and always have. It's a bit of a classic but has never been wildly popular or wildly unpopular. If I really hated it I would probably use my middle name or just change it. Not worth getting upset about. If you have a shit name don't let it define you.
