To think most women don’t just read Mills & Boon?

A guy said to me most women read mainly Mills & Boon books.

I thought he was an idiot...

Not worth engaging with misogynistic bullshit.

Electrascoffee · 22/07/2018 17:08

Yes I also thought misogynistic. The books aren't even written by one author at a time!

He is an idiot. I've read hundreds of books, maybe even thousands, and not one of them has been a Mills and Boon.

charliebear78 · 22/07/2018 17:08

I DID read them-when I was about 12/13!!!

Now I much prefer a good gory Serial Killer Thriller.

Electrascoffee · 22/07/2018 17:09

Me too Dickensian. Apparently I'm weird because I like thrillers.

OP posts:
Electrascoffee · 22/07/2018 17:09

I think you could be forgiven for reading them at 12/13 !

Has he met any women? Confused

wellBeehivedWoman · 22/07/2018 17:10

Clearly bullshit, survey done just recently indicates that women read significantly more than men. I also don't know a single person who actually reads mills and boon!

MissusGeneHunt · 22/07/2018 17:11

What a twat. Does he just read mechanics mags and porn? Yadnbu!

MissusGeneHunt · 22/07/2018 17:12

Ps for the record, I'm a woman and have read both the above but not Mills and Boon!

MissLingoss · 22/07/2018 17:13

Some Mills and Boon are written by men!

BillywigSting · 22/07/2018 17:16

I've never read a mills and boon.

I got about two chapters into one once when I was 14 and thought it was bollocks and went back to reading discworld.

Romance novels don't interest me in the slightest.

I like books with dragons and laser guns, maybe even the odd witch.

NoelHeadbands · 22/07/2018 17:18

He’s an idiot.

I hope you flashed your hazel-with-flecks-of-tiger-gold eyes in fury at him, and tilted your chin, the way you often do when angry.

hornbeam · 22/07/2018 17:18

He's probably basing his theory on what his grandma reads.

PinkBuffalo · 22/07/2018 17:21

I've never read a mills and boon either! And like everyone else, I've read thousands of books over the years. Never read a "romance" though!

MissLingoss · 22/07/2018 17:28

He's probably basing his theory on what his grandma reads.

Ageism is no more acceptable than sexism.

bookmum08 · 22/07/2018 17:29

Some of the modern ones are just the same as all the other chick lit books out there. They seem to sell plenty so someone must be reading them. I don't think it's blokes. Nothing terrible about Mills and Boon books. They are just books. Like them or don't like them. Whatever. No one cares. As for the guy who said it - a little bit of an amusing thing to say. I would of asked him if he had ever read any and talked to him about some of the well known Mills and Boon writers and the publishers imprints - which includes Crime novels. It could of been quite an interesting conversation. I like talking about books and authors.

CSIblonde · 22/07/2018 17:40

My granny read them. I read a few out of curiosity, around age 13, and realised they were all same plot (petite & slender Amber first dislikes then falls for, tall dark, brooding misogynist & millionaire Blake) & read Gone with the Wind instead. I read anything & everything except chick lit: trite, sickly sweet & beyond boring.

MeanTangerine · 22/07/2018 17:42

That's what he wants to think.

ImAGoofyGoober · 22/07/2018 17:42

Never read them, probably never will.

Imo women are much more likely to read a thriller

RiverTam · 22/07/2018 17:42

Silhouette Desire were always much much racier than Mills & Boon, we used to get them from the library by the bucketload.

Haven’t been near anything like that since I was about 16. Never read romance novels.

Racecardriver · 22/07/2018 17:45

What is a Mills and boom?

Racecardriver · 22/07/2018 17:46

Sounds like a paint shop. Or a cocktail.

BMW6 · 22/07/2018 17:47

I have never known any woman who reads M & B.
What a twat he is. Apart from you has he ever spoken to a woman?

SluttyButty · 22/07/2018 17:49

I've never read one in my life, the thought of romance novels is a grim one.
Give me a good historical novel or some medical journal stuff or one of my faves, the dictionary and I'm happy.
