Tesco staff member verbally abusing my step daughter

mrSteely · 21/07/2018 18:03

My 13 year-old step-daughter was verbally abused and threatened by a tesco staff member. They even chased her through the store. Tescos then told my step-daughter when she informed the duty manager, that they would have a word with the staff member,

I then spent 4 days calling and emailing to complain, finally getting hold of the store manager 5 days later at 7 in the evening (I had to chase them up on it)

The result of a staff member threatening a child in the store? £15 in tescos coupons and a letter apologising for the alleged abuse (it was caught on CCTV, which I requested but still haven't received, and probably never will)
the staff member is still working in the store and still makes my step-daughter uncomfortable when entering the store.

Do you think I'm being unreasonable in wanting the staff member fired? Considering I really should have involved the police?

There's something missing here, some truth maybe?

MerryMarigold · 21/07/2018 18:15

Grin At the China-sized missing chunk. I was thinking the same thing.

Aridane · 21/07/2018 18:15

Very odd

PerryPerryThePlatypus · 21/07/2018 18:16

As someone who works in retail I think there is more to this. Staff don't chase teens around the store for no good reason.

C0untDucku1a · 21/07/2018 18:16

Hmm sounds like there is some history between the sister and sd.

mrSteely · 21/07/2018 18:16

I was going to inform the police but I thought I'd see if Tesco would sort it out, i.e. no longer have that person working in the store.

Mainly because the police are so busy these days I didn't want to add to the workload unless absolutely necessary.

@Sammyham88 And I can bet you that the OP will fan the flames till the thread gets to 774-posts before actually saying what actually did happen.

Till then it'll be:

  • She was just looking at the various meal deal offers
  • She did have her phone out but wasn't playing music
  • She asked if they had cherry coke as opposed to the regular one
  • She wasn't being silly just a normal teen
Pengggwn · 21/07/2018 18:17

You should call the police if you think this was intimidation. Don't expect Tesco to fire an employee for a 'crime' you are not prepared to report, eh?

BewareOfDragons · 21/07/2018 18:17

tbh, OP, there seems to be a lot of information missing. Surely a store employee just didn't randomly start abusing a customer buying something and minding their own business... something must have happened, even if it was a misunderstanding...

LoniceraJaponica · 21/07/2018 18:18

In that case I would contact the store and tell them what happened and ask to see the CCTV footage.

BottleOfJameson · 21/07/2018 18:19

If you read back OP has explained what she thinks happened i.e. her SD is known to the Shop Assistant's sister. I would definitely want to see the CCTV to clarify exactly what happened. I probably would be less worried about Tesco and what they're going to do about it (from their perspective it's one child's word against a shop assistant's) and about what was going to happen going forward if this family have a vendetta against your SD for some unknown reason.

NLBM · 21/07/2018 18:20

Yep, push for the CCTV.

Aridane · 21/07/2018 18:20

Went to AS OP to get a better sense of her DD but this is her first thread. Waiting for the mother of all drip feeds

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 21/07/2018 18:20

Obviously it's not on what the member of staff did but I would hazard a wild guess here that your DD isn't being totally truthful regarding knowing the sister of the person.

Did Tesco view the cctv but wouldn't allow you to?

liverbird10 · 21/07/2018 18:20

Hmmm. Hmm

Noqont · 21/07/2018 18:21

I dunno, there's a staff member in Tesco's near me that's utterly vile to my 10 year old DD. DD is a selective mute induced by trauma, and the staff member has refused to serve her unless she speaks. DD isn't rude. She just doesn't speak.

feathermucker · 21/07/2018 18:22

There's got to be more to this than what you've stated.

Serialweightwatcher · 21/07/2018 18:23

Sounds very peculiar - either the Tesco person assumes your SD has bullied her sister, or has her confused with someone else - either way, it's totally unacceptable for a staff member to harass any customer like that and I would demand the staff member be disciplined and keep on at them

supersop60 · 21/07/2018 18:25

There's a lot of x-posting.
OP has now told us what happened.
Get the CCTV. This is unacceptable.

GetToFuck · 21/07/2018 18:26

I don't think that getting the Tesco's lady fired is going to make things easier for your SD at school with Tesco sister. If there is conflict/bullying, surely this will just make it worse?

Labradoodliedoodoo · 21/07/2018 18:26

I think you should report to police but talk to your DD and
Ask her for honesty first. You might get a fuller story on the back of it though.

flippyfloppyflower · 21/07/2018 18:26

This is all a bit weird = I doubt we will ever get the full and truthful story here

Lindy2 · 21/07/2018 18:27

It sounds like your daughter has done something pretty awful to the employee's sister. Something that you don't know about but is enough to cause her to act like this. It doesn't dound acceptable behaviour but she is clearly very, very angry with your daughter about something.
You need to find out what your daughter has done or this person thinks she has done.

SteveMcGarrettsBudgieSmugglers · 21/07/2018 18:27

personally I would have gone in and asked to speak to the manager or assistant manager in person, had they not taken the matter seriously enough I would have told them I was reporting the matter to the police and done so, then rung 101 and reported the incident. Probably would have contacted head office as well

SleepingStandingUp · 21/07/2018 18:27

It is never OK for an adult to bully a child.

The store will however take into consideration what led to it. What actually hapened?
