Dirty messy room disaster

Helpmehelpmyself1 · 20/07/2018 21:58

AIBU yo ask for some support tonight? I know I can’t sleep and I need to do this so i don’t mind doing it over night. Bare in mind, no children so ni one is living in these conditions but me.

My room is dirty and messy. The most it possibly could be. I struggle with depression and I don’t know how I’ve let it get this monumentally bad. I’m talking dirty dishes, rotting food, every thing I own and clothes covering the floor.

Please give me some support I know this is my fault but I need some encouragement to tackle this as it’s just not healthy to live in

@Helpmehelpmyself1 please keep us updated I am so excited for you! You are making me want to get out of bed and start cleaning too!!! Brew

BarryTheKestrel · 20/07/2018 22:51

I have been there OP. It all just seems like too much to the point where even the smallest of tasks seems huge and overwhelming.

In your situation is stick on some music and time 15 minute intervals. In 15 minutes clear all the plates to the kitchen. Take a break. In the next 15 minutes fill a bag/bags with as much rubbish as you can. Take a break. In the next 15 minutes fill a bag with all clothes that need to be washed and if possible put on a wash. Take a break. In the next 15 put other things in their home (even if they don't really have one yet). For example your hairbrush on the floor will eventually live on your dressing table that's also a mess, add it to that mess for now.

Once the floor is clear, work your way around the surfaces, again in 15 minute bursts, clearing and putting away what you can.

Once all of that is done you can wipe down, hoover, etc etc.

You don't need to do it all at once or all tonight.

Take it as it comes. Do what you can. Take regular breaks. If you are tired, sleep. If it becomes too much, take a break for as long as you need.

Good luck OP. It's hard work but you'll get there.

DragonNoodleCake · 20/07/2018 22:56

Good luck! My DD can get like that sometimes so I understand- just focus on having the nice space to relax in

anon138 · 20/07/2018 22:58

Instead of looking at it as one big task, why don't you pick up 3 items every time you leave the room and just deal with those 3 items there and then. Then repeat it the next time you actually use the room and then leave again. It'll get sorted fairly quickly that way.

SassitudeandSparkle · 20/07/2018 22:58

How are you doing OP, sorry I went AWOL there - DD needed something. Take a break if you need to, or fill another bin bag.

jazzyfizzles · 20/07/2018 22:59

Tidy house tidy mind! You sound determined and I'd put money on it that each bag you throw away will feel like a relief.

Music whilst cleaning makes it so much more fun, get some tunes on. Take a before and after picture so you can see what you've achieved!

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 20/07/2018 23:01

Do you have another room that you can eat in?

I have been where you are in the past and now I ban myself from food in my bedroom. I can eat on the sofa or at the table. This helps massively keep my room in a cleaner state. It still gets messy, but it's mainly clothes and never seems as overwhelming as dealing with the dirty crockery.

Mary1935 · 20/07/2018 23:01

Hi help me - yes it’s good to do it when your motivated. My house is very messy I’m only just starting to get on top of it - sometimes I look at the mess and sit back down as I can’t face it. I’m also easily distracted but then I tell myself I will do an hour and sit down for 20 mins. I tend to do more.
My problem is also I don’t structure the cleaning on a week to week basis. So i never keep on top of it.
Don’t beat yourself up - I wish you well through the night and would be interested to hear how you get on in the morning.

Helpmehelpmyself1 · 20/07/2018 23:05

I really am determined. I’ve just had a quick bite to eat as I was hungry. I’ve thrown 3 bin bags already, which annoys me that I’ve even got that much and I’m not even done. But I think I will manage if i keep at it.

The messages are so helpful. I will keep you all updated.

If you have more than a sinkfull of dishes and If possible, run a hot ish bath with a squirt of washing up liquid and put the dirty dishes in there, while you continue cleaning the rest of the room, by the time you have finished in the room, the dishes should just need a quick wipe around, no need for scrubbing, and that will be your washing up done too.

Reaa · 20/07/2018 23:07

Most importantly once you are done, take the time to look around and congratulate yourself on what you have accomplished, that feeling of satisfaction and pride at the end, will be worth everything you are doing right now.

spanielle · 20/07/2018 23:08

I so wish I could come help you!!!

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 20/07/2018 23:13

You can do it Flowers. Big bin bag and laundry basket big pile for everything else chuck everything into one of the three. Even if you just do five minutes at a time it's a start. You'll get there - play some music while you're doing it.

Leeds2 · 20/07/2018 23:14

Sounds like you are doing a good job!
Don't exhaust yourself though, only carry on tonight if you want to. Otherwise, it will still be there to be dealt with tomorrow, less the stuff you have already done. You must be able to see an improvement already, even if just a little one!
Would second getting rid of old food first, and moving old plates, mugs etc to the kitchen. Try and wash it as you go, or at least put it in to soak.
Good Luck!

user1510568216 · 20/07/2018 23:17

If you can afford it just literally chuck all the dirty dishes etc. Can replace from pound land. Get all the clothes & put them in the washing basket. You can wash them when you have time. Just have a clear space then you can see what needs to be cleaned. Dust, wipe down skirting boards & Hoover. Less mess & clutter is less overwhelming. Personally I think just blitz it & your done. Doing it in stages drags it out & you'll never get it done. Good luck! You will feel like a new person when it's done. Chilling out in your lovely fresh clean bedroom.

CaptainCarp · 20/07/2018 23:19

You can do this Helpme!
Sometimes you need to do it when the mood strikes although if you start to struggle then sleep.
Once you've got the rubbish/food out & dishes back to the kitchen then I'd suggest a list of tasks / areas as pp said. I'll say "right I'm putting all my clothes away/in the wash" or "I'm going to sort out my bedside table". Usually once I've done the 1 thing I move onto another as I feel I've achevied something rather than staring at the whole room.
You're doing really well Smile

Geldhorn · 20/07/2018 23:21

Go helpme - you sound like you are really cracking on with it. The night is young - can you make 5 bin bags by midnight?

Don't worry about throwing stuff away - give yourself a fresh start and then stay on top of it.

We are all rooting for you!!

hmmwhatatodo · 20/07/2018 23:26

Hi op, hope you’re powering through. I started a decluttering mission a couple of years ago and somehow lost motivation and never finished. I was really into it though and I feel a lot better for what I managed to do (I don’t feel I even had as much stuff as other people to begin with!) I kept hoping I would be keen to continue with the decluttering this summer but so far I haven’t felt the urge! Watching programmes like How clean is your house used to motivate me to get up and sort things out there and then but I haven’t seen any in ages.
One of the things I loved was having my wardrobe sorted out with things I was only actually going to wear. I kept opening and closing it for a few weeks just to admire it!

Weepatchesoflove · 20/07/2018 23:30

I don’t have anything practical to say, just wanted to wish you good luck help. You sound like you are doing fantastic. We are all wishing you well. Flowers

legolammb · 20/07/2018 23:32

We’ll done on making a start - that can be the hardest part. You deserve somewhere clean and comfortable to relax.
I sometimes find setting a timer on my phone helpful in getting you to whiz round and get lots done in a short space of time.
I’d also say don’t worry about creating a charity/give away pile at this stage - it will create more work for you having to go to the charity shop or eBay it, just be ruthless and get rid at this point if there is stuff you don’t want. You just need to get things clear to give yourself a good starting point.

sheldonesque · 20/07/2018 23:37

I am going to do this for someone soon. Just need them to go away and I'm all set.

Cheering you on lass Flowers

Helpmehelpmyself1 · 20/07/2018 23:42

Rotting food binned, dishes have been removed but I’ll likely throw them out as is. Starting to see floor space, clothes are making the room look messiest most at this point so even though I’ve piled them up, I might bin bag and move to a different room for now.

Thank you so so much everyone

My problem is also I don’t structure the cleaning on a week to week basis. So i never keep on top of it.

Same here, I'm either boom or bust. When I do clean I go overboard - think toothbrushes and cocktail sticks! It then puts me off doing it again...

I see a PP has mentioned Kim and Aggie. I used to love HCIYH? I watch it on YouTube. Smile

Three bags is great Helpmehelpmyself1 ! Well done! I can assure you that once you start seeing the fruits of your labour you will feel really proud, like you've accomplished something, and you can really start to enjoy your space. I wish you well and good fortune, you can do it! Brew (

Wishiwasonholiday1 · 20/07/2018 23:47

Well done! You'll feel so much better when you wake up tomorrow.

If you can't finish tonight, write a list of what you want to do tomorrow and then at least you'll feel as though you've made plans and steps towards clearing the rest in the morning.

Bagadverts · 20/07/2018 23:52

Well done OPSmile
