It's a tricky one. Trying to buy our first home after renting. I'm scared and want to make sure we make the right choice. Haven't viewed the houses yet but can't help looking at the listings.
I want your honest opinion and why you like/dislike them.
About us: couple in their late 20s/early 30s. No kids yet but potential start thinking of having kids in the next couple of years. Location wise both houses are perfect. Please MNers I need all the help this is already so bloody stressful :(

First house x

JustLikeBefore · 19/07/2018 13:35

thing is a detached house in close proximity to others doesn't save you from shitty neighbours though. it can save on noisey tvs and banging on walls, but noise neighbours also tend to leave windows and door open aswell as being noisey in their gardens. shitty neighbours are whole different breed, a house in a field is the only way to avoid them.

I'd still take 1 over 2, because of the layout it works better for small and older dc.

If 2 had the same layout I'd say yes detached over semi, but it doesn't.....

Familyfrom1endstreet · 19/07/2018 13:36

Not read all the thread but definitely house 1. Would seriously think about swapping kitchen and sitting room though.

LEMtheoriginal · 19/07/2018 13:38

I prefer the first - location would decide me

Livinglavidal0ca · 19/07/2018 13:48

I initially loved number 1 but I think I’d go for two, get rid of the horrible conservatory and put bifold doors in our to the garden where the lounge meets the conservatory currently. And then I would extend the kitchen massively!

Failingat40 · 19/07/2018 13:50

House 1 looks better imo. Although it's a semi it's got a bigger (not overlooked) garden and is also open at the front.
There's a lot of greenery and open space and lovely walks around that house whereas house 2 is a potential nightmare neighbour sitting duck.

It looks so crammed in on street view and very over looked both front and back. The next door neighbours driveway is practically touching your house and on first glance I thought it was a semi because of the two drives either side.

Look at sold price sites to see the turnover of properties on both streets.

The only slight negative I can see with house 1 is its semi detached and the road it's facing looks to be potentially busy.

worstmovieever · 19/07/2018 14:00

Not sure if you should really post these unless you are the seller/estate agent and trying to drum up more business. I'm actually rather keen on the first one so I may go and have a look myself. Cheers op 👍

Bluelady · 19/07/2018 14:27

Why on earth not? They're links to a commercial property website. Ridiculous thing to say.

loveisland · 19/07/2018 14:27

First one everyday of the week, downstairs is lush, outside gravel is fine toddler uses it like sand anyway! Much bigger floorspace!

LemonysSnicket · 19/07/2018 14:29

2 is way nicer

Hoppinggreen · 19/07/2018 14:30

2 is fugly on the outside but quite nice inside

Oneinthegrave · 19/07/2018 15:05

Prefer 1

holidaycountdown54321 · 19/07/2018 15:36

It's a close call I can see why you are having difficulty deciding. House number 1 reminds me of my own home, although we don't have the weird pebble thing going on outside! I think the first house looks bigger and the kitchen is newish, although dark grey wouldn't be my choice. Second house looks a bit more dated, although it has a nicer feel somehow. I'd still probably say one marginally.

I think viewing both on the same day would probably help, estate agents pictures can be misleading. I've loved houses from online pics and then got inside and realised the pictures have just been stretched beyond recognition or taken at a certain angle to hide things, eg a huge pylon!

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 19/07/2018 15:38

I'm definitely house 2! No contest!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 19/07/2018 15:40

One looks more spacious and two looks better from the outside. I prefer number ones garden too.

bastardlyandmutley · 19/07/2018 16:20

House one.

PeachFam · 19/07/2018 18:29

Goodness me I never thought I will get so many comments on this thread. Thanks so much everyone.
Well here is the truth, my DP doesn't like option 1(the semi house) purely because it a semi. He never really considered it Blush but I just want to make sure at least we view it. I like them both, I think both could potentially be a good house for us. Both gardens I think are on the smaller side and that's just something we have to accept. If we had another 100-150k we could afford a bigger house that close to town but unfortunately we don't so that's that. I made a pros and cons list for the 2 properties.

Option 1 pros
-slightly bigger garden
-bigger lounge, family room
-kitchen/diner

Cons
-its a semi
-fairly busy road
-HATE the kitchen
-don't think it has much character

Option 2

Pros: -cul de sac - it will be quieter than option 1 -detached -can get rid of conservatory to have a bigger garden -garage attached to house so maybe extend to do a kitchen-diner, maybe utility as well -like the character of the house more

Cons:
-kitchen is OK but want to change it eventually
-3rd room is small although could be good nursery or office to work from home

Yup from looking at the listings I like House 2 a tad bit more but will keep an eye on the market. :)

I didn't even realise 2 was a detached. Go with detached every time then.

Bluelady · 19/07/2018 18:59

This isn't being goady but I really don't understand the obsession with detached houses. I'd take a good solid, well built semi over a new build detached any time. But then I'd always go for a Victorian or Edwardian terraced house over either so I guess I'm weird.

Vitalogy · 19/07/2018 19:07

I've lived in a good few different places. There has always been noise in one form or another from neighbours. Bodily functions, sex noises, rows, music etc etc. Which are mostly avoided with a detached, also less worry about disturbing others with our noises.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 19/07/2018 19:08

Number 2, always go for a detached. Both are beautiful though.

KarlDilkington · 19/07/2018 19:09

Much prefer 1. 2 looks a bit dated

pennycarbonara · 19/07/2018 19:09

Bluelady have you been lucky never to live next door to very noisy people or chain smokers whose smoke leaks through into your house?

SynchroSwimmer · 19/07/2018 19:19

Option 1
The house appears to be of a slightly more substantial build....?

Natural light appears perhaps better

Location seems to be nearer an open green space?

Main consideration for me would be where where the sun is going to be....sunsets or sun in the daytime, winter sun when the sun is low at that time of year...

holidaycountdown54321 · 19/07/2018 19:21

Looking at your update I'd say 2, didn't realise it was detached and it's in a quieter location. You can change pretty much everything you don't like about house 2.
