With his rise to fame recently it seems like Jordan Peterson is everywhere. Personally I really enjoyed his book and I find his lectures fascinating largely, I think for me, because he's a great orator.

I know he has his detractors and I'd be really interested to hear their opinions on him. I don't really see much not to like about his rhetoric; it feels like he tends to speak mostly on universal truths but just in a really engaging way?

No idea who he is

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 17/07/2018 16:04

Never heard of him.Confused

NeatFreakMama · 17/07/2018 16:05

I like him too.

I don't get out much, though.

Awwlookatmybabyspider I think not getting out much might be the reason I know who he is as I get stuck on YouTube video way too frequently! Wink

I like him too. He's not afraid to work through an argument and the implications of what people say logically, and he's very good at keeping a clear head whilst he does it.

As far as I can tell, people dislike him because their opinions are based on emotion rather than any kind of logic.

NeatFreakMama · 17/07/2018 16:23

allertse I think you're right. I had a friend say that he didn't like him because he changes his mind if someone provides an alternative fact and I would have thought that was a great quality to have. I like a decent debate and if one side is immovable, even when presented with a new reality, then it's not much of a debate.

I've never understood that comment. Its how everyone reacts. Emotions happen first, then cognitive thought.

lostincake · 17/07/2018 16:34

He's great!

NeatFreakMama · 17/07/2018 16:49

UpstartCrow I think it's that someone's opinion of a topic should be based on evidence based facts/ truth rather than emotion (where they're different).

I don't exactly agree with all of his views, but he makes his arguments with sound reasoning and logic and isn't afraid to put his point across in hostile environments, so I admire him for that.

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 17/07/2018 16:53

I love him!
Loved his book. Love his interviews.
Intelligent, articulate man

goodnessidontknow · 17/07/2018 16:55

I alsl think he talks a lot of sense. He is misquoted and deliberately misunderstood frequently unfortunately.

AvtarRamKaur · 17/07/2018 16:56

I think he's great. I also don't agree with everything he says, but why is that a bad thing? The line of thinking - that you must agree with someone 100% or you cannot agree on anything at all - is illogical.

Chesntoots · 17/07/2018 16:59

I've read some of his work.

Unflappable, intelligent man.

NeatFreakMama · 17/07/2018 17:02

AvtarRamKaur yes good point, I totally agree with you. I think I was interested in what people didn't agree with only because I've not seen anything yet I didn't; although it's definitely possible!

I am not taken with his manner. Thats probably a reflection my upbringing, but I respond more favourably to someone who speaks to me as an equal than I feel shows signs of arrogance. I have only seen a few lectures but in those he has often been assertive in a way that makes me uncomfortable, as though others present won't have thought of the things he has said.

sacredgeometry · 17/07/2018 17:53

I love him. He is so passionate and really cares about people.

sacredgeometry · 17/07/2018 17:55

Oh and some of his best Appearances aren't on Channel 4 news or even his lectures, but his long form discussions with the likes of Joe Rogan and Dave Rubin are great. (All on you tube)

UneMoonit · 17/07/2018 17:57

YANBU.

He's the perfect example of a reasonable person who gets called an "ist" or a "phobe" in bad faith by people who know they are lying, and a perfect example of why people so often view those accusations with scepticism now.

Ofthread · 17/07/2018 18:00

To start: he’s anti-intellectual, a misogynist and beloved of the alt-right. When someone explains away complex ideas and debates in a reassuring way that makes people feel safe, there are alarm bells going off for me.

Ofthread · 17/07/2018 18:02

& someone on this thread has already actually used Trump’s term ‘alternative facts’ in good faith.

feellikeanalien · 17/07/2018 18:02

When I saw the title of this thread I thought you were talking about the England goalkeeper but I think he is Jordan Pickford!!! (Backs away from thread in embarrassment).
