Jilly Cooper time

It’s that time of year again - when I want to be a character in a Jolly Cooper novel - and only eat orange and steak for a week so I can squeeze into a too tight dress with a stain I’ve artfully covered with a brooch, after I have drenched myself in scent so I can get off with a dangerous drunk mysterious man who is loaded with cash and will whip me away to San Tropez, where I will only have an old bathing dress with moth in the seat which I keep falling out of. There I will meet a loveable old lech covered in Man Tan and flirt wildly while getting tight after too much gin.

Stella I have the vintage set as well! Gifted from DM who introduced me to Jilly when I was stuck in bed with glandular fever aged 17!

stubbornstains · 18/07/2018 21:23

Gosh, it's so hot I just want to wear a bikini (and gum boots to deter the adders). I'm quite overweight, but it's great to know that my sex god of a boss still wants to pull me into a thicket of drought- shrivelled vegetation because I am unconditionally adoring Grin

Beeziekn33ze · 18/07/2018 21:41

Just the thread I need as I lazily toss my shiny chestnut mane, lasciviously stretch my tanned arms, heavy with clanking gold bangles, and await Paris Alvaston's return from his sell out Romeo and Juliet world tour. As the sexiest thespian around he'll land his silver helicopter among the rubylipped rhododendrons, leap over the tightly bound knot garden, dash lithely through the thickly pillared Georgian windows, pull me off my caressingly velvet chaise longue, and crush my eager nakedness to his slim throbbing body.
Then, at last, he'll whisper in my clean, neat, conchshell pink ear, 'Who do you think I am?' as he chokes dramatically on my Tiffany starfish earring before he can tell me who were his rich, rakish distinguished father and gorgeous wayward penniless mother and why he was abandoned with his Eiffel Tower snow globe in bloody Alvaston.

Does JC know about this thread? Sure she'd enjoy the homage!

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 18/07/2018 22:07

Much as I loved Jilly's earlier books, I haven't really enjoyed the later works, however going by this thread there is more than enough talent here to produce an absolute stonker of a a new book written in the old JC style. We just need a publisher.

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 18/07/2018 22:11

I think I'll drop my battered copies into my, jodhpur clad, blonde daughters bedroom .... it definitely should be a part of her education as an 18year old now !

Taffeta · 19/07/2018 06:25

My mum loves Badedas. She’s 81. Grin

HulaMelody · 19/07/2018 06:30

I just pulled a magnificent selection of leftovers out of the fridge along with a bottle of Bolly for breakfast.

SuburbanCrofter · 19/07/2018 07:54

Am I the only one here currently at an impromptu party being pursued by a manly lesbian dog breeder who's drunk too much gin??

ResistanceIsNecessary · 19/07/2018 08:16

Oh to wrap oneself in a scratchy dark blue towel whilst your lover takes a bath and says "ke-rist" every time he looks at you.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 19/07/2018 08:22

The early books were the best. Pandora probably marks the last book I really enjoyed. The most recent ones are OTT - too wordy, everyone has too-clever nicknames, characters are one dimensional. The appeal and charm of the earlier books was that the characters were so well rounded - so you could find yourself rooting for Ricky F-L despite the fact that he'd killed his son, because of the way it was written and the depth of the characterisation.

The depiction of Taggie in the later books is such a shame - she was a really appealing character in the early books but by the time you reach Wicked she's been dumbed down to a woman who can do no wrong. Her depiction in Mount! is utterly ridiculous - this saintly woman who does nothing apart from shuffle about cooking huge meals and valiantly fighting cancer whilst telling nobody.

SurfnTerfFantasticmissfoxy · 19/07/2018 09:34

It's such a shame the last few books have really gone down hill - I think she should consider doing a Wilbur Smith and have someone else write them 'with her' effectively aping her style

Wizard I have been really reminded of that over recent weeks! The recent downpours we've had made me think of that scene where Georgie, Lysander, Ferdie and Kitty all strip off and 'bob' round the field to Blue Pearl.

ResistanceIsNecessary · 19/07/2018 11:12

With Dinsdale the basset hound Grin

MrsMint · 19/07/2018 11:44

Did he come home rushed but strangely pensive from polo and wordlessly mount you over the aga?

vampirethriller · 19/07/2018 13:02

I've just found Prudence in British Heart!

toomanycompartments · 19/07/2018 13:08

yes fiona walker should do a new Jilly shouldn't she? Nobody wrote about the 80s and early 90s like JC did.

Been loving this thread! I can't resist any longer, I'm going to settle down in the sun and re-read TMWMHJ for the billionth time.
I can't bear the part in Polo where R F-L's whippet (Millicent?) pines away and dies while he is in prison. As a crazy whippet lady it makes me bawl my eyes out 😭

SparkyBlue · 19/07/2018 18:32

I am loving this thread. For some reason the recent heatwave has made me reread JC again. I am currently on Mount which I hadn't read before.

AgathaMystery · 19/07/2018 19:19

I think Riders gave me unrealistic expectations about men Hmm

I've had a hell of a day. Mrs Bodkin is on her jollies and one of the labradors has been sick on the Cotswold stone floor. I'm thinking of having it carpeted...

LongSummerDays · 19/07/2018 19:45

lazy Grin

thenightsky · 19/07/2018 21:07

Googling all things Jilly and came across this glossary

vampirethriller · 19/07/2018 21:50

My northern millionaire husband is away and I'm bored so I'm going to eat banana ice cream despite my chunky thighs. You can tell he's northern because he says Oop when he should be saying Up, but I love his money anyway. I mean I love him anyway. Oops. Or should that be Ups?

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 19/07/2018 21:56

I've just finished 30 hours of Riders and am now listening to Prudence.

With fabulous timing, Rivals, TMWMHJ, Polo and Appassionata are going to be released next week...
