To think that young adults are stuck on a toddler’s diet

Is it just me, or is there a trend for the messiest, sweetest, fattiest dog’s dinner of a dish amongst 20 somethings who pronounce it “amazing” and say “we HAVE to go here”?

I’ll post a couple of pics to illustrate. Maybe it’s just in Liverpool, but it seems to be that they’re all into the equivalent of the ice cream factory at Pizza Hut.

Who hurt you? This is such a random thing to get aggy about.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/07/2018 17:57

By the way I’m totally aware that I sound like an old closed-minded fuddy duddy. Grin

It’s AIBU, Lily. No-one hurt me. Confused

But the odd thing to me is that they insist on Diet Coke and then gorge themselves on the most calorific messy dessert in existence

Do you have one particular 20 something in mind OP? Because this is weirdly specific Grin

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/07/2018 18:01

It’s just at family parties we’ve had. A few people have absolutely insisted on Diet Coke not full fat to the extent we’ve had to leave our guests and go to the corner shop to buy some. And then tucked into a load of cake or whatever.

Who does?
I’m sure these things are rare ‘treats’. It wouldn’t be Instagram worthy if they ate it every day would it?
Not my cup of tea but meh( each to their own. When I was in my 20’s I mainly existed on wine.

lilyheather1 · 15/07/2018 18:02

Sorry, that was a reference only millennials would get. I must toddle off to the kitchen, my chocolate fudge brownie with melted marshmallow dinner, and a diet coke won't eat itself!

rainingcatsanddog · 15/07/2018 18:03

It's for putting on social media. If we had the cash and choice that they have I'm not convinced that we wouldn't have done the same.

SoyDora · 15/07/2018 18:03

Maybe it’s because they don’t like full sugar coke? DH can’t stand the taste of it, he only drinks Diet Coke. He obviously wouldn’t be so rude as to insist someone went to buy him some though, he’d just drink something else.

pandarific · 15/07/2018 18:03

They might drink less alcohol. But the odd thing to me is that they insist on Diet Coke and then gorge themselves on the most calorific messy dessert in existence. It’s a nonsense.

No it isn't. Confused I don't drink my calories - why would you drink 200 calories when you could have a similar thirst quenching drink for no additional calories? It's 'not getting tubby 101'. I'd order the diet coke and still eat that waffle because 1) I'd decided to eat that chocolately waffle thing and 2) wanted a drink. I don't see how that's 'a nonsense'.

Luckystar777 · 15/07/2018 18:04

It looks gross. I'm 34.

Flisspaps · 15/07/2018 18:07

I'm 36, I love an afternoon at the Baltic Market with DH. Great cocktails (the rhubarb negroni was amazing) and enormous halloumi fries!

It's not all bubble waffles and freakshakes, and I certainly wouldn't take my DC as I'd rather enjoy my meal in relative peace!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/07/2018 18:07

Quite sad if the only reason they order it is cos it’s Insta-worthy, is it not?

I have to admit this thread made me hungry. I don't eat like that often, mostly because my kids would expect me to share and they only have to look at sugar to turn into little monsters, but yeah, on a child free night food like above would certainly be an option.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/07/2018 18:08

Yes, the cocktails sound good, but the food puts me right off. What should I eat if I don’t like the look of the dog’s dinner desserts? Apart from halloumi fries?

By the way what the hell is a freak shake?

I hate all the photos and videos (how to make...) on Facebook, yes some of it does look appalling as a one off treat but I notice a lot of people are eating these things on a regular bases. There seems to be a lot of restaurants (of you can call them that) that just serve sweet things, ice cream, milkshakes and cake? I can see why there are more obese people. Some people are just attracted to these things, pretty colours, chocolate etc...

SoyDora · 15/07/2018 18:10

Who says the only reason they order it is because it’s insta-worthy? Maybe they order it as a treat and decide to take a photo of it for Instagram? You are bizarrely worked up over this.
Some people like high sugar, high calorie desserts as a treat. I doubt they’re eating it for every meal. What exactly is the problem?

Flisspaps · 15/07/2018 18:10

@CurlyhairedAssassin you could eat some of these things from the same establishment, not a blue M&M in sight...

Ugh, YABU. 20 somethings are adults and they are free to make choices and spend their money as they please. We all have our indulgences. Nobody is forcing YOU to buy this stuff, and that's all that matters.

As an aside- I'm a 20 something. I eat incredibly healthily and exercise. I don't drink alcohol or fizzy drinks. Apart from the alcohol thing, that's true for almost all my friends so you are massively over generalising.

slashlover · 15/07/2018 18:11

I would eat the M&M thing, it's not like people are going to be eating it for every meal, it's a one off and a novelty.

BTW, I drink Diet Coke, regular Coke tastes like syrup to me.

Kursk · 15/07/2018 18:11

I feel the diabetes oozing out my screen looking at those pictures

CurlyhairedAssassin · 15/07/2018 18:12

SoyDora, I like high calorie high sugar desserts myself. Just not those. I’m really not worked up. Just don’t understand the fuss.

OP posts:
LeahJack · 15/07/2018 18:13

I think they drink less than we did. Sugar's the drug of choice.

This. It probably has the same amount of calories that a heavy drinking session does. Plus a lot of young people are fit and active and can have things like that without getting fat.

ILoveDolly · 15/07/2018 18:13

Yum! I love this brave New world where fantasy childhood foods are OK for adults. All for Insta of course *burp

JustHereForThePooStories · 15/07/2018 18:13

So you think that nobody between the age of toddlerhood and 20 eats anything unless they can put it on Instagram? You sound slightly unhinged.

Bubble waffle cones are delicious. I’d happily eat one now. I’m 35.
(And, for context, I don’t have the palate of a toddler. I’m currently eating pate with duck ham, and pickled cherries so don’t rely on predominantly sweet foods).
