Supermarket Car Parks

AIBU to think it is incredibly selfish of people to take extra time to reverse their car into a parking space in a car park when it would take a fraction of the time to drive in front first. Usually there is a queue of traffic behind them waiting for them to slowly reverse in!!!! They couldn’t car less about wasting other people’s time. They live in their own SELFISH bubble.

Oh my god I'm dead

HaveYouSeentheWritingontheWall · 15/07/2018 12:25

I reverse in because there is a safe path between the rows of parking spaces in our local supermarket, I'd rather load my shopping into the boot of the car while standing safely on the path than have to watch out for the twats who drive too fast and too close to the parked cars, much safer for kids as well. It may well be quicker to drive straight in nose first but it takes more time to reverse out in a busy car park.

blackbirdbluebottle · 15/07/2018 12:26

YABU, it can be a nightmare to reverse out especially with families and children running around. I'd rather someone reverse in and be safer driving out than someone get hurt

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/07/2018 12:27

If they drive straight in you still have to wait while they reverse out
I’m guessing op is not the kind of driver that politely waits when people have their reversing lights on to be honest Wink

EnthusiasmWellAndTrulyCurbed · 15/07/2018 12:27

I reverse park at least 95% of the time. I'm awesome at it and am sorry you are not OP because it is much easier and safer to just drive straight out of a spot.
Holding someone up for an extra couple of mins is of no consideration when I choose the easiest and safest way for me to park.

TeenTimesTwo · 15/07/2018 12:28

I forward park in the supermarket to have easy access to the boot.

I reverse park when going to the cinema/theatre/event as it makes exiting faster when everyone wants to leave at the same time.

Otherwise I do whatever seems most appropriate.

duckfuckduck · 15/07/2018 12:29

If I’m doing groceries I drive in nose first. Because then I can open my boot and put the trolley there for loading purposes.

If not I reverse in. I prefer to reverse in tbh

BlueBug45 · 15/07/2018 12:32

How I park depends on the supermarket's parking spaces. Tight spaces I tend to reverse in. My car will actually park itself but I've not used that yet.

woodhill · 15/07/2018 12:33

You can't get your trolley to the boot if you back in.

I have sensors on my car which is brilliant and a lot of cars now have cameras when reversing

BlueBug45 · 15/07/2018 12:34

Forgot to say I worked for a company that due to an incident where someone got run over in the car park, everyone had to reverse in.

woodhill · 15/07/2018 12:34

I hate anyone behind me watching when parking so would tend to drive in but I can reverse park if necessary

BlueBug45 · 15/07/2018 12:36

@Woodhill - oddly in places where the spaces are small I don't tend to buy a lot.

Another reason to reverse in is I've had larger cars encroach into my parking space. If I couldn't see clearly when driving out I would scrap mine and their car.

ProperLavs · 15/07/2018 12:36

I have seen some frightening near misses with people who seem completely unaware of pedestrians or cars reversing out of supermarket spaces. These people shouldn't be behind a wheel.
I was sitting in my supermarket space yesterday and a guy infront of but with a pathway between us and to my left me took minutes to get out of his space.

Me and a poor bloke waiting to put trolleys back, but not daring to go anywhere near this bloke's car, sat and watched. It then became apparent that he was going to reverse into me even though I wasn't near him. I moved my car back just in time.
They are probably the same people who don't know the rules of roundabouts either.

PastramiAndRye · 15/07/2018 12:36

The space available tends to dictate it for me. Sometimes the angle you approach a space means you'd need to reverse and straighten to get in nose first. This, of course, may be just me as parking isn't my forte, however I am able to reverse park into these spaces.

My triumph and pride over achieving the reverse park trumps the annoyance of a the car waiting for me. Check me out in my selfish little bubble.

I also don't go to supermarkets in peak times!

Peaspleaselouise · 15/07/2018 12:36

Where I work it’s company rules that people have to reverse in, for safety. And it’s easier to drive straight out.

I think the person living in a selfish bubble may be closer to home, OP.

Collaborate · 15/07/2018 12:36

It’s very dangerous to reverse out of one of those spaces. Unable to see if there’s anything or anyone coming, unless you have someone standing by your car guiding you out you’re risking an accident and injury to others. Who’s unreasonable now?

Flowersonthewall · 15/07/2018 12:39

God help the people in the supermarket who might actually queue infront of OP and waste so much of their precious time. How dare others go about their life. Don't you know how busy the OP is!

NorthernSpirit · 15/07/2018 12:39

God, how incredibly important you must be if you have to wait s few seconds for someone to reverse park their car!

Reverse parking is safer for everyone. 14% of accidents happen in car parks and most of these occur when someone is reversing OUT of a space. When you reverse into a space you have more control over the vehicle.

You should be applauding those who reverse in.

Most people who park front in actually can’t reverse park - I suggest you get yourself some driving lessons.

ProperLavs · 15/07/2018 12:42

at our local supermarket there are idiots who walk behind my car when i am reversing into spaces.

Sirzy · 15/07/2018 12:43

When reversing into a space yesterday a cyclist zoomed behind the car. If they had happened while trying to reverse out of a space it could have resulted in a nasty accident

Bibesia · 15/07/2018 12:44

I usually used to reverse in. Then I realised that logically, it made no sense. It's easier to manoeuvre a car forward than backwards, and easier to move out of a confined space than into it, therefore you keep the maximum level of difficulty down by not combining the two more difficult options. Even if you have no problem reversing in and so aren't aware of it, you are still making life slightly harder for yourself by reversing in.

This!

And, realistically, there is no reason why it is more dangerous reversing out, if you use your eyes.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/07/2018 12:46

Yep - as others have said, it is much safer to reverse in because you can drive out forwards - the important thing for me is that it is safer for passing pedestrians in the car park because I have a much better view, but it is also safer and easier for me, because I have a better view of other cars moving round the car park.

VodkaRevelation · 15/07/2018 12:49

It’s easier to drive forwards on an open road but I did it far easier to reverse into a space between two cars than drive in forwards. And it is safer driving out than reversing out. You can use your eyes but they can’t access the blind spot can they?!

Loonoon · 15/07/2018 12:51

My DD was a driving instructor for many years. He impressed on me that it is always safer to reverse in and drive out than the other way round. Having witnessed numerous near misses (and a couple of prangs) in car parks I still follow his advice.

skoda62 · 15/07/2018 13:34

Hahaha, the wows of the impatient motorist. Always in hurry, has to get somewhere quickly, never leaves enough time for any unforeseen delays. Toot toot toot get outer my way wanker. And a bloody supermarket of all places! So you got a horn on your shopping trolley? Can just imagine you in the isles. Barging your way through without consideration for anyone else......
