How about a mixed tournament? When two countries compete they play their women's teams against each other in the first half and their men's teams against each other in the second half. Similar alternation for ET if needed and penalties.

I think the advantages would be fresher legs throughout the games, more higher intensity play, women being involved a major global sporting event...oh and I think England might win given they are the only team to have made both sets of semi-finals in the women's and men's competition.

Confused
JacquesHammer · 13/07/2018 09:05

I’m a huge advocate for women’s sport

Your idea is bonkers Grin

rainingcatsanddog · 13/07/2018 09:08

I don't it would work. Countries like the USA have a massive difference between men and women's skill and the women might not qualify because of the men being weaker.
Some countries don't even allow women to watch the World Cup. You'd have countries withdraw their teams making it Not-Quite-The-Whole-World Cup.

MyWhatICallUsername · 13/07/2018 09:12

No, both women and men deserve their own tournaments and shouldn't have to share the stage in one big tournament.
I agree women's football should be given more hype and media coverage but they deserve their own tournament

rainingcatsanddog · 13/07/2018 09:14

I think that many people would tune in at half time to see the men's half as they don't know the women in the team because they aren't professionals like the men.

I think some countries wouldn't screen World Cup matches if women were playing. They wouldn't risk the loss of money.

There is a Women's World Cup. Obviously not nearly as high profile as the men's but that's not the fault of the broadcasters. If the women's tournament is to take off more women need to watch. Some people on MN
are very sneery about people who watch the World Cup never mind those who show passion about it.

ooerrmissus · 13/07/2018 09:15

Why would you want to let men play in the World Cup? They'd be shit at it. Let the women do what they do best!

Ifailed · 13/07/2018 09:15

easy to work around your proposal, just get the men to identify as women for the 1st half, and then revert back to their sex for the second.

buildabear · 13/07/2018 09:21

Hahahaha no.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 13/07/2018 09:24

Yeah but no.

The women deserve their own stage to show their skill.

skippy67 · 13/07/2018 09:46

I wouldn't watch it.

M3lon · 13/07/2018 09:49

hmmm there are quite a lot of sports that have mixed team events...admittedly they are mostly racket sports...but often they are the best bit.

I think its interesting that in athletics you have both competitions at once, and now there is a move to intersperse the races for athletes with disabilities too....but when it comes to football it is unthinkable to dilute the men's game with anything else.

Its such a shame when you don't have to go very far back in history to find a time when the women's game was more popular than the men's.

Grin I would love to see the reaction of the average 'bloke in the pub' to this!

Fine by me, as I don't watch either.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2018 09:53

but when it comes to football it is unthinkable to dilute the men's game with anything else

Quite the opposite. Why should the women’s game be diluted!

M3lon · 13/07/2018 10:11

yes, its exactly the reaction of the average bloke in the pub to women's sport that's disturbing....

ah well - back to the drawing board.

OP posts:
rainingcatsanddog · 13/07/2018 10:13

If you're from the US then men would be diluting the women's game.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2018 10:21

ah well - back to the drawing board

Well there’s the WC in 2019, get behind that for a start!

Harpingon · 13/07/2018 10:42

Why don't the women deserve their own World Cup? 🙄 I think woman's football is developing really well.

ToffeeUp · 13/07/2018 10:47

FIFA Women's World Cup
France 2019
7 June - 7 July

Ifailed · 13/07/2018 10:47

Harpingon They do, next on is in 2019.

araiwa · 13/07/2018 10:59

Another terrible idea to add to the list of recent 'improvements' suggested

SoapOnARoap · 13/07/2018 11:13
Biscuit

Words fail me

Harpingon · 13/07/2018 11:14

Ifailed, I know : ) I meant why would that be cancelled so we could tag onto the men's. Not worded well..

Amanduh · 13/07/2018 12:53

Errrrr NO.

araiwa · 13/07/2018 12:59

It will result in women being vilified and blamed for their teams defeat because they are nowhere near the same level as men.

It will be a shitshow of women being bullied and humiliated on the pitch.
