AIBU to not wash my hair for a few days?

So usually I wash my hair every other day. I always have a wash in the morning and a shower at night with a hair cap if not washing my hair. I always tie my hair back during the day. AIBU to not wash my hair up to 5 days depending on greasiness?

This is an issue? Really? Wash your hair or don't wash your hair. Nobody will die.

blackbirdbluebottle · 11/07/2018 14:11

It was just a question to see what other people thought

It’s your hair
You can wash it or not wash it whenever you want

What a daft thing to ask....!

kaytee87 · 11/07/2018 14:13

My hair would be disgusting if it wasn't washed for so long and possibly wouldn't smell very nice.
One of my friends easily goes a week without washing her hair and it's gorgeous. Hers is dark, very thick and wavy. Mine is blonde and straight so I think grease just shows up more on it.

DidimusStench · 11/07/2018 14:13

Wash it when you want to wash it?

Is it not common knowledge that you shouldn’t wash your hair too much anyway and that after a while, it sort of starts cleaning itself? I think that takes weeks though...

Icklepup · 11/07/2018 14:14

Try it out and see..

blackbirdbluebottle · 11/07/2018 14:16

Thanks I was just asking for advice

I used to wash my hair everyday until this year.
I’m now on day 5 of no wash.
As long as it doesnt stink or look too greasy then stuff it Smile

Eatsleepworkrepeat · 11/07/2018 14:28

My hair goes through phases depending on the weather - some times of year 3/4 days is OK, others it needs every other day. Tied back it looks much the same regardless. Give it a go!

FASH84 · 11/07/2018 14:28

My hair is long thick and curly, if I wear it curly. I have to use product to keep it from being huge (think Monica from friends when they went to the Caribbean), so I wash it daily to get the product out and because I wake up looking like Russell brand or a very unkempt lion. If I straighten it, I can easily go a week of using shower caps or tying up and it isn't greasy at all , I just run the straighteners over it each morning, but I get a desperate urge to wash it after about day five. It just depends on your hair type

NewGrandad · 11/07/2018 14:29

I haven't washed my hair for years. It gets wet in the shower or in the rain but never has shampoo or soap on it. It was perfectly clean after about a week 10 days plus. Admittedly there's not as much of it now as I get older but not washing your hair is not disgusting and is good for the environment.

CaoNiMa · 11/07/2018 14:29

No! You must wash it EVERY DAY! It's the rules. The... Hair Rules.

BigCarrot · 11/07/2018 14:37

Seriously? If it needs washing wash it if it doesn't don't. I personally hardly get a chance to wash mine as i have a 10 week old and have to take 5 min showers and it doesn't bother me. I used to wash it daily. Now I just wash it when I feel it needs it as there's other things to worry about in life

LuMarie · 11/07/2018 14:39

I've always washed mine every day, wear it down, or I feel ugh.

A hairdresser recently told me to stop for a while, leave it a few days in between, as I had some damage due to colour mess up and was chopping and regrowing healthy, obviously I want this done as well and as quickly as possible.

I hate to say it but she's right. I still feel ugh and will be back to every day once it's healthy and strong again, but I have noticed that the condition is improving.

My hair is very lightened, so doesn't get oily, I just like washing it and I add conditioning oils in. Mine is long and poker straight and I'm bed head in style, I do nothing fancy to it at all because I'm useless and it's looks lovely just left alone, so really I don't need to wash it every day, I just like the feeling!

For hair that isn't coloured to swedish blonde, apparently washing every day strips your hair of oils, so it might feel or look less clean as it produces more to compensate, but if you stop washing so often your head gets used to it and balances, so it doesn't need washed to not feel oily. Meaning you absolutely don't need to wash your hair every day if it looks, smells and feels ok.

Dry shampoo is also very popular now for washing less, I haven't tried it as I'm happy to have a genuine excuse to wash mine rather than avoid it, but I've heard lots of really good things about it of saving time and washing less but with really good results.

Maybe worth a try?

FurryDogMother · 11/07/2018 14:43

I wash mine once or twice a week, or if going out for the evening. Washed it yesterday. and will be washing it again on Friday. I have quite a lot of hair (about 2 feet long) so it takes a while to blow-dry, which
is why half the time I can't be bothered with it, and just tie it up!

LeighaJ · 11/07/2018 14:56

I don't understand the hostility from some.

I usually wash my hair every 3 or 4 days. Sometimes I'll use a dry shampoo if it's a bit too oily but I don't want to wash it yet for some reason.

My hair use to be really oily but after I stopped washing it every day it stopped being oily over time, until I could go longer without washing it.

bridgetreilly · 11/07/2018 14:58

I worked to increase the length of time I can leave mine. For ages I washed it every other day. Now I can easily leave it 3-4 days, sometimes more, depending on the weather and what I've been doing. It does take a while, I think, and at first it feels unbearable to leave it longer, but your scalp soon adjusts and I think is much happier for it.

halfwitpicker · 11/07/2018 15:05

If you leave it for five days it will look amazing when you do wash it due to the grease that's built up.

macnab · 11/07/2018 15:09

I have extremely thick and dry hair. I wash it every 5 days. This is because I don't need to wash it any sooner and because when I do wash it, it takes an hour to wash/dry/straighten and is a complete faff! I really couldn't be arsed with doing that more frequently and thankfully I don't need to. So, if your hair isn't a greasy smelly mess after a few days then it's fine to leave it.

Someonehelpmi · 11/07/2018 15:10

I wash my hair when I remember Blush I'm lucky though and my hair doesn't get greasy that quickly, if I haven't after about 5 days though I will. Or if it has sick/poo/wee etc from the baby in it

scramblesontoast · 11/07/2018 15:13

As others have said, it massively depends on your hair type and whether or not it feels dirty/looks super greasy/smells etc. My hair is naturally straight, oily and it's down to my hips. I can't wash it too often because my lengths and ends get SO dry so I just touch up my roots with dry shampoo and wash it every 4 days or so. :) I think it's hard to have one answer for everyone!

frenchfancy · 11/07/2018 15:20

I wash mine once or twice a week. It is too long to bother with every day.

One thing I have done recently is stopped using conditioner. My teen dd assured me that conditioner was only invented as people were washing their hair every day needed to get some oils back in. So if you don't wash every day you don't need conditioner. Turns out she was right.

I've also stopped conditioning DD3s hair - which is a permenant tangled mess. Since I've stopped the conditioner the tangles are much reduced and she can brush her own hair without me help - win!!

TroubledLichen · 11/07/2018 15:25

I have a weekly blow dry at a salon. In between I run my fingers through it and maybe put some serum on the ends. It’s very dry so doesn’t get greasy and more frequent washing increases damage. It depends a lot on your hair type, there’s isn’t a one size fits all approach.

MiamiLogic · 11/07/2018 15:32

If it feels gross, wash it. If it feels fine, don’t.

I wash mine every other day, sometimes twice a week in winter. I wash my fringe in between sometimes because it gets greasier quicker than the rest. Dry shampoo?

vampirethriller · 11/07/2018 16:42

I wash mine once a week. Wear it down the first few days then up for the last two. If I wash it every other day it's somehow dry and greasy at the same time... Once a week and it's great.
