To worry that I've been pronouncing this word wrong?

Tongue? How do you pronounce it? I am sat watching the football with my in laws, DH and DDs. DD2 said something about sticking her tongue out (DCs pronounce it "tung" like me) MIL corrected her and said it's pronounced "tong". I knew that was how DH pronounces it but I thought it was a regional variation, but now I'm worried I'm just wrong! Can anyone help settle this? DH and in laws are from Nottinghamshire and I'm from North Yorkshire if that helps!

slothcity · 07/07/2018 21:47

doctorcuntybollocks · 07/07/2018 21:49

Twillow · 07/07/2018 21:52

it's a bit like almond - I say ah-mond (arlmond if I'making an effort to be proper) and I want to shoot people who say al-mond...)

princesstiasmum · 07/07/2018 21:52

From W Yorkshire originally, tong there too

doctorcuntybollocks · 07/07/2018 21:52

PeanuttyButter · 07/07/2018 21:53

Here’s another one.. how do you say beige as in the colour.
My grandma swears it’s bee-ge where everyone else I know says b-age

FromAtoBin21months · 07/07/2018 21:53

Tong! ( Norfolk here, originally from Gt Manchester) never heard tung before

Thehop · 07/07/2018 21:54

I was told at school that “tung” is in a human mouth and “tong” is the meat in a butchers

Lovestosing · 07/07/2018 21:54

Why would "tung" make anyone cringe? Hmm

Tong here too - another Manc although I now live down south. I hadn't really noticed that apparently everyone around me would pronounce it differently, I'm going to have to try and get 'tongue' into as many conversations as I can this week just to check.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 07/07/2018 21:56

I say "tung". I'm Home Counties and apparently my "accent" is (according to others) "most definitely RP". I don't think I have an accent particularly.

HappyLollipop · 07/07/2018 21:56

I say 'tung' and im from London, I've never heard anyone pronounce it like 'tong'!

DesperatelySeekingSnoozing · 07/07/2018 22:00

The word tongue is a bit yucky. It does make me cringe. In the same way that gusset does but not as much as moist

thisisillyria · 07/07/2018 22:00

I reveal my Leicestershire origins when I say "tong" - my husband thought it was hilarious when we first met. "Bald" and "bold" are also homonyms for me (both rhyme with "told") - again Leicestershire. Accents are wonderful and fascinating. I'm glad there is so much variety.

summersmith · 07/07/2018 22:00

Tung in South Yorkshire. Now excuse me I'm going to go and feel sad about the empire. 🤨

flourella · 07/07/2018 22:01

I made that ridiculous remark about "o"s not sounding like "u"s. They quite often sound like "u"s when I talk, just not when I'm talking about tongues!

What is the alternative way of pronouncing "lickorish"?

TwinkleToes86 · 07/07/2018 22:02

TONG!! I’m from Nottingham.

Tung is just weird.

TwinkleToes86 · 07/07/2018 22:03

Tung makes me cringe. It just sounds icky.

doctorcuntybollocks · 07/07/2018 22:04

What is the alternative way of pronouncing "lickorish"?

lickoriss

flamingnoravera · 07/07/2018 22:05

Tong is the typical pronunciation in West Staffs and Cheshire, I worked on a cooked meats counter in Cheshire as a teenager in the 70s.

My family (Irish and Southern England) said tung but my customers almost all said Tong. I hated either because the idea of eating tongue of an animal (along with brawn) made me feel queasy. Actually I can hardly find a way to spell how my dad (Irish) pronounced it. Throat was pronounced "troth".

Kool4katz · 07/07/2018 22:06

Tong.

Perfectdisaster · 07/07/2018 22:07

Tung

PopPoppityPop · 07/07/2018 22:07

thegreylady · 07/07/2018 22:09
