To worry that I've been pronouncing this word wrong?

Tongue? How do you pronounce it? I am sat watching the football with my in laws, DH and DDs. DD2 said something about sticking her tongue out (DCs pronounce it "tung" like me) MIL corrected her and said it's pronounced "tong". I knew that was how DH pronounces it but I thought it was a regional variation, but now I'm worried I'm just wrong! Can anyone help settle this? DH and in laws are from Nottinghamshire and I'm from North Yorkshire if that helps!

The phonetic spelling in the dictionary is also 'tung' (don't know how to type the symbols on here!)

forestsmurf · 07/07/2018 20:49

Me and my OH argue about this regularly as I say tung and he says tong and we tell the children our own ways of saying it. Didn't realise until recently and now it's a bit of a thing, we were brought up in different counties so I assumed it was regional dialect

Sweetheart1313 · 07/07/2018 20:50

I'm from Nottingham, I saw tong

I say tung but have E Midlands and Northrrn rellies who say tong. I would definitely view tong as a regional variation.

Lovestosing · 07/07/2018 20:53

Damn it! Can't find how it's pronounced, so clearly it can be either! Now I think about it, DH has taken the piss out of my pronunciation of tongue a few times so I'm going to show him this thread! I feel vindicated! Oh, and for the record MIL is lovely. Smile

It’s Definitely tung. I think tong is used in more working class circles in certain areas.
Like others have said: tongs are what you curl your hair with!

Never heard an American say tong either.
