Come on England!!

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 08/07/2018 00:14

I was watching England in a local pub and the atmosphere was great. Went back to my friend's house and watched the other match there. I'm rather pleased we're playing Croatia.

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 08/07/2018 06:11

Found you all. Bloody lost you in all the excitement (!)

user1471517900 · 08/07/2018 07:40

Even if we lost the semi now, this team have been absolutely fantastic and nobody deserves to be scapegoated.

(If you're reading this Sun or Mail- that includes Raheem)

ToffeeUp · 08/07/2018 08:46

Loving all the praise for Jordan Pickford, finally people see what Everton, Sunderland and Preston North End fans have been saying for ages.

France v Belgium
England v Croatia

Bring it on!

MarshaBradyo · 08/07/2018 08:49

So exciting, love it
Pickford was brilliant
Both matches were great

TornFromTheInside · 08/07/2018 09:05

@LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset

That username is just...
Magnificent!

GameOfMinges · 08/07/2018 09:24

Obviously fuck the DM, but I was not impressed with Sterling yesterday. Bring on Rashford instead!

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 08/07/2018 09:31

Why thank you Torn :)

chrisinthesun · 08/07/2018 10:27

@1happyhippie

Whatever happens now the whole team can come back with her head held high. They have been fantastic!

Today was just brilliant, Pickford was man of the match for me, but they all played their hearts out, couldn't ask for more.

Now Wednesday should be a good game, I can see us getting to the final here. If we play like we did today and Croatia play like they did today, we should be able to do this. Plus, they have just played 120 mins plus penalties so we should be better rested.

I think it will be France in the final. They have a strong squad and play really good football, although Belgium shouldn't be underestimated.

If or when, we get to the final we shouldn't fear anyone though, and just play with everything we've got and we could do it!

Have you seen what's trending on Twitter? There's #thingspickfordcouldsave and #garethsouthgatewould some of them are hilarious.

I hope they get to see all the fans celebrating at home and realise how proud we are of them.

Superb post, Grin and you have saved me a job. You have written pretty much exactly what I was thinking (and was going to say!)

I am loving this thread It is soooooooooooo much better than the one entitled 'Wedding day, England are playing?????' There are some right miserable gits on there! Hmm

They do make me laugh though..... denying the footie is popular, and saying they don't know a SOUL who is interested in it. Bet they think the earth is flat too. Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/07/2018 10:39

They say that they dont know any one interested, means they are probably too self absorbed to know.

OP posts:
1happyhippie · 08/07/2018 10:40

Thank you * chrisinthesun

Credit where it's due I think. We are always so quick to criticise the team for underperforming, so when they do so well it's great to see everyone getting behind them. I am loving it!

Now back to the semi final! If we had been told right at the start of the tournament, that all we need to do is beat Croatia to get to the final, we would have took that all day long! Yes, it's going to be the toughest match so far, but it's the World Cup, the further you get the harder the opponent.
We've got this!
It's been a great tournament so far. No trouble, everyone mixing and having fun. Shock teams been knocked out and some brilliant football.
Not sure what we're all going to do when it ends! 😂

ForalltheSaints · 08/07/2018 10:43

I'm not sure who I want to win the first semi-final. France would make it a more competitive final, but Belgium being a team with so many talented players deserve to win more I think. An international team winning a trophy managed by a former Wigan Athletic manager would be a first I expect!

ajandjjmum · 08/07/2018 10:46

What a fantastic Saturday afternoon! It wasn't even heart in your mouth stuff for England - they deserved to win. Fantastic team and fantastic example they're setting for young people throughout the country.

Waistcoat Wednesday should be a thing!

(DS was at a wedding yesterday, where football was banned. Half the guests disappeared in to the woods at regular intervals to sneak a peek at the match on their phones!)

chrisinthesun · 08/07/2018 10:50

They say that they don't know any one interested, means they are probably too self absorbed to know.

And/Or the people they mix with are as dull and miserable as them! Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/07/2018 11:15

Waistcoat Wednesday definitely needs to be a thing!

OP posts:
MaureenMLove · 08/07/2018 11:41

I believe I was Jason Mansford that started Waistcoat Wednesday on Twitter. My friend posted it on FB and it was my duty to keep it going onto MN!

I've certainly got something that can be called a waistcoat and I will be wearing it on Wednesday.

Small problem though. BIL is getting married in 2 weeks and before the World Cup, DH wanted a waistcoat to go with his suit. He hasn't got round to getting one yet. There aren't going to be any left are there? Grin

chrisinthesun · 08/07/2018 16:26

There is a poster on the other thread (called 'wedding day England playing') saying..

I was at London Pride yesterday and no-one was interested in the football...

But I guess she WOULD say that wouldn't she? Wink

And it's funny that, because I know a few people who went (to London Pride,) and they said the footie was being shown in various places around the place, and many people were watching it and enjoying it.

As has been said, there is an awful lot of snobbery around the football from some posters on here.

Upshot is that the haters on here and the very odd people who are in denial about how popular the World Cup is, associate football with the working classes. THAT is why they refuse to admit they have any interest.

I mean they wouldn't want people to think they're working class WOULD they? I mean that just wouldn't do. They have spent waaaaay too much time convincing themselves (and everyone else) that they're middle class.

People denying the World Cup is immensely popular are coming across as really obnoxious and quite daft tbh.

Why they can't just admit they're wrong about this is beyond me to be honest.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/07/2018 16:29

Chris, theres another thread that implied that if you like the world cup, you are a Tory.

Oh and that you cant read either.

I'm not a Tory supporter, but I can read. I even write too.

OP posts:
chrisinthesun · 08/07/2018 18:08

Hi Tali.

Yeah I am getting that impression too, that (some) people think if you're a footie fan you must be thick, racist, and slow. Oh, and you probably voted for Brexit too. Grin

As I said, I know a number of people who are football crazy this summer - whose careers range from doctor, lawyer, vicar, vet, dentist, teacher, hairdresser, window cleaner, and various tradesmen... People from all walks of life, and all professions... So to suggest you must be a thick racist chav to like the footie is laughable at best, and nasty and insulting at worst.

In addition, I literally shake my head in despair, at the weirdos on the other thread who are claiming 'just because 30 million plus people watched the quarter final, that doesn't mean it's popular!' What a load of shit.

17 million voted for BREXIT, and completely changed the landscape of politics, and are going to take us out of the EU. So how they can say 30 million people (almost DOUBLE the amount that voted for Brexit!) is not a huge amount and doesn't mean the footie is popular, is just fucking stupid! Hmm

But yeah, the snobbery around football is laughable and yet sad at the same time. I pity these miserable fuckers. Grin

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 08/07/2018 18:23

There's yet another thread.

I have never read so much bitter, professionally offended bullshit in my life.

OP posts:
chrisinthesun · 08/07/2018 19:01

I will go have a look soon. I fancy a laugh. Grin

HateIsNotGood · 08/07/2018 19:09

At the last look this thread - Excited about the World Cup has 147 posts and the we don't want England to win thread has 145. A lot of these are from the 'we want England to win camp'. And of course many are just debating miniscule minutae associated with their perspectives which could apply to anything.

So - seeing as this is Thread 3 - I guess the 'Go England' side are winning here. nb: the thread at Thread 1 was about looking forward to the World Cup itself - and now we have the bonus of having a good team with a great manager.

BitchQueen90 · 08/07/2018 19:12

The other threads are so ridiculous. Going through life being such a misery guts must be so boring. Grin

TornFromTheInside · 08/07/2018 19:16

I got to Man City with my son, all around me are sensible decent people, young children to OAPs, male and female in a 70/30 M/F split I'd say.

There is no denying that some idiots attend football matches, but there are 50,000 people or more at a top match. if 100 idiots cause trouble (which is really rare now) that's 0.2%.

The most vociferous tend to congregate in specific parts of stadiums - to chant, and yes, some of the chants leave a lot to be desired (but again, not as bad is they used to be), but it's still a very very small percentage.

I've had this argument countless times. Home and away fans walk to and from the game together, often chatting. There is a little more caution with famous rivalries, but still, very little trouble per capita.

Some of the greatest memories in life have happened at football, admittedly fortunate to support City who've had success recently, but Abide With Me still makes me well up, and I know my son will always remember the famous 'Aguerooooo moment' stood next to me that day.

It's not perfect, but it's a wonderful, wonderful sport to play and watch, and is enjoyed my prince and pauper alike.
Give little kids a ball, and they'll kick it. Anywhere in the world.
There's beauty in that. Sheer beauty.

I NEED HELP - we were invited to ( and accepted months ago) a wedding vow renewal and party, that starts at 2pm on Sunday. Was hoping that couple would be sensible and provide a TV for couple of hours, but just seen post of FB and she's only realised this afternoon there is a clash, and although husband has suggested the TV idea, she's said no. And the only two people that have replied have said no don't stress, everyone will think you're more important than football. I personally think ( assuming Wednesday goes our way) that there will be lots of people not turn up. I'm not close enough to her to say anything, but husband is quite good friends with the (non football fan) man so we would feel bad just not turning up. Arghhh
