To not understand why some people won’t wear suncream?!

Currently sat in the garden and enjoying the sunshine with my factor 30 on... with the family and not one of them is wearing suncream.

I can see their skin burning.

They can see their skin burning.

But they think I’m weird for wearing suncream.

I don’t understand why some people would knowingly do this?!

YANBU. I judge sunburnt people. I wear a 50 on my face and between 30 and 50 all over. There are people who still think suncream stops you tanning. I try not to tan at all but I still can't completely avoid it. I never burn though.

oldbirdy · 07/07/2018 14:51

I don't tend to wear suncream but then I never sit in the sun. I try to balance my need for vitamin D (had severe deficiency) with the fact that direct bright sunshine gives me a bad head. If I must sit out, I sit in the shade. I would never sunbathe.

NotTakenUsername · 07/07/2018 14:51

I have had cream on precisely three occasions this year. Sometimes it’s a bit overkill.

shutthedoorbob · 07/07/2018 14:51

I work outside and really should wear it but most of the time I just forget 😱

OutingMyDog · 07/07/2018 14:51

I would burn after 15 mins to the point it would hurt like he'll and I'd feel ill. I don't understand why anyone likes sitting in full ll sun. It makes me feel like shit all round.

RedRedBluee · 07/07/2018 14:52

Ignorance. Don’t take the risk of skin cancer seriously. Maybe think that they won’t get a tan.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 07/07/2018 14:52

There was a kid at the park yesterday, 3/4 or so, and his mum was trying to get suncream on him but he squirmed away. She says 'oh suit yourself then, I'm not wearing any either!'

And it was so bloody hot yesterday!

I wear it all year round on my face as I don't wish it to look like a chewed old slipper by the time I'm 50.

Takfujimoto · 07/07/2018 14:53

My eldest is golden brown despite bring slathered in factor 30.

My DD has always been paler than the rest of us and she still is now.

My poor sister puts two layers of sun cream on and always goes red with minimal sun exposure, peels and then turns white again!Confused

GissASquizz · 07/07/2018 14:54

It's because they are harder than the sun.

WindyWednesday · 07/07/2018 14:55

I wear it abroad when I’m sunbathing. But not in this country because I’m dark haired and tan easily. I look really dark now, but haven’t actively sought the sun. Only a bit of gardening and pegging put the washing etc, I tan easily and don’t really burn.

SerenDippitty · 07/07/2018 14:56

Some people seem to think being lobster red is preferable to looking pale.

ManicUnicorn · 07/07/2018 14:57

Because they're dickheads? Nothing infuriates me more than seeing a sunburned child. There is no excuse these days when we are aware of what the sun can do and how to prevent that happening.

Don't get me started on those idiots who still use tanning beds. Yet they'll still expect the NHS to treat them when they develop skin cancer.

DickensianHysteric · 07/07/2018 14:57

I've got really pale skin and I accidentally got a bit burnt a couple of weeks ago (was at an event where I wasn't expecting to be outside) and it was horrible. The back of my neck and one arm were all red despite me trying to stick to the shade as much as possible. Since then I have been applying Factor 30 or 50 whenever I will be outside for even the shortest time, and I make sure I carry a mini tube in my bag.
Can't understand not putting on any sunscreen if you know you will be outside.

Etymology23 · 07/07/2018 14:58

I have allergic reactions to lots of sun creams and don’t burn if I’m not wearing it. Wearing it often makes my skin break into a rash and sometimes causes photosensitivity so makes me more likely to burn.

However, assuming the above doesn’t apply, YANBU! Burning is so bad for you!

AutoFilled · 07/07/2018 14:59

Well I’m judging you for sitting in the sun in the middle of the day. I would never do this. Sit in the shade now and you don’t need the sun cream.

Stop judging others. Because you aren’t any better. Any amount of sun bathing is wrong.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 07/07/2018 14:59

I haven’t worn any yet this year... haven’t burnt at all either. I’ll wear it abroad though.

Personally, I hate suncream. It makes me feel clammy and sweaty, and then dirty because of that. On holiday it’s not so bad as I’d be in and out of the pool/sea.

If I was the type to burn easily.. I think I’d have to just stay out of the sun.

Neolara · 07/07/2018 15:00

Because I generally don't burn. Because I hate the feeling of cream on my skin. Because it gives me really hideous eczema on my hands. Because it makes me feel dirty.

OutingMyDog · 07/07/2018 15:00

I have an allotment and spend loads of time outside so I really do have to put it on. I had to spend the day at the allotment recently and got burnt through my factor 30 even though I reapplied a couple of times. I think I had mild sunstroke too tbh.

I think some people are just so unused to being outside they don't think about it.

I saw a girl the other day with the most beautiful pale skin. She must never leave the house!

totallynewnamechannge · 07/07/2018 15:00

My 18m old is really very tanned despite me being a seasoned shade seeker, covering him up and using suncream when necessary. He's had very little sun exposure and how brown he is is embarrassing. I keep thinking people think I've damaged his skin. Me and DH are both quite pale but my dm and dB tan at the slightest hint of sun so I guess he has their skin

I agree, I fucking hate the feel of it. And the having to wash it off at the end of the day.

NotTakenUsername · 07/07/2018 15:01

It is messy and sticky and most people can work out when it is actually required. I can’t understand people who slather it on at the first glimpse of sunlight.

Rickets, anyone?

reallybadidea · 07/07/2018 15:03

You have thick relatives. Sympathies.

OTOH I'm chortling at sunbathing being 'wrong'. Who knew getting a tan was an act of moral turpitude?!

SoyDora · 07/07/2018 15:03

I don’t tend to wear it in the UK, because I don’t sit in the sun/sunbathe.

AornisHades · 07/07/2018 15:03

I just put sun cream on ds and DH announced "He won't need it at this time of the day!"
