To not understand why some people won’t wear suncream?!

Currently sat in the garden and enjoying the sunshine with my factor 30 on... with the family and not one of them is wearing suncream.

I can see their skin burning.

They can see their skin burning.

But they think I’m weird for wearing suncream.

I don’t understand why some people would knowingly do this?!

Orange oil is (strangely) better for me, doesn't clog pores as much and absorbs better. But as its usually low-factor I can't use it without already having a tan.

Lalalala3 · 07/07/2018 16:28

Even worse...why do some people wear oil?!

Someone in my family sunbathes at every opportunity, wears oil to deep tan quicker, AND uses sunbeds. Confused
She even had her own sunbed at home at one point

NorthernSpirit · 07/07/2018 16:28

They don’t wear sunscreen because they are idiots.

Just back from a week in Spain and sadly you can tell who is a Brit. All red and sunburnt. My mum is half Greek and I have olive skin, yet I always wear sunscreen as I don’t want to get skin cancer and the damage ages you. Each to their own.

Lalalala3 · 07/07/2018 16:29

By oil I mean like carrot oil, not suncream oil

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2018 16:30

"Would like to know what brand you use.. because if it does do this, I’d buy it 👌"

Special face ones for the face including Boots own brand the La Roche Posay one. Just normal ones for the body like Nivea.

mimibunz · 07/07/2018 16:30

You are being very unreasonable. It’s absolutely none of your business!!

Nothisispatrick · 07/07/2018 16:31

I'm pale but don't wear it religiously. Only if I'm going to be out in the sun for a significant amount of time, the rest of the time I top up my vit d.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 07/07/2018 16:35

I turn 40 this year. So far 2 of my school mates have already passed away due to secondary cancers caused by skin cancer.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 07/07/2018 16:36

See, I have Nivea at the moment... it’s so greasy!!

It’s not about the thickness of the cream as most of my body butters are much thicker than sun cream which is usually fairly runny.

We got loads of sun cream at the minute as I’m trying to find one that my DS can wear without an eczema breakout before we go on holiday. They are all greasy, the only exception being Banana boats powder dry one.

Excited101 · 07/07/2018 16:38

People are incredibly stupid

GertrudeCB · 07/07/2018 16:40

Avon do a good facial one , hardly any slide or residue.
My uncle died of malignant melanoma so all my family wear sun protection religiously.

NotTakenUsername · 07/07/2018 16:40

Does anyone rate that P20 stuff?

HRTpatch · 07/07/2018 16:40

I have PMLE and my face erupts in spots with or without suncream.
If I sat out for 15 mins without suncream on my body I would burn horribly.

Ollivander84 · 07/07/2018 16:46

Factor 50 for face most of the year for me and factor 30 on body plus avoid sun. I look like a vampire and burn within minutes

BrexitWife · 07/07/2018 17:02

I dint wear suncream in the uk.
Because they are full of chemicals that are actually not so good for you. Id rather prefer to protect my health long term.

BUT I also don’t stay in the full sun in a weather like we’ve had in the last few weeks, suncream or not.
And I protect myself with a piece of material if need be (t-shirt, saying around my shoulders, whatever).

And of course, you also have the fact that some people are more sensitive to the sun than others...

I agree too with a pp about vitD.
And I’ll add the fact that actually being in the sun has equally been shown to be protective cancer wise (aka it protects you from a lot of other cancers too!!).

Aria2015 · 07/07/2018 17:06

I think it's madness. I wear factor 50 on my face all year round and factor 3 on my body. I still tan (not that I'm bothered if I do or don't). The sun is so damaging and ageing. Nearly everyone I know who looks for their age says they've always either stayed out the sun or worn sun protection.

specialsubject · 07/07/2018 17:07

weather i rrelevant. orbit of planet does not change.

may no science deniers ever have to put up with some really nasty chemicals in cancer treatment due to wilful ignorance.

Kingkiller · 07/07/2018 17:08

People are idiots. And some have very bizarre beliefs about sun. For example that only sun 'in a foreign country' is strong enough to burn you. Hmm Or that you won't get burnt if you're not actually sunbathing. Or that the sun can't burn you after 3 o'clock. Or that only being burnt lobster red can cause damage.

LaLaLanded · 07/07/2018 17:09

I don’t wear it. But then I am mixed race and grew up on the equator. I’ve burned once in my entire life and that was under extreme circumstances.

DS is 3/4 white but his skin tone is mixed race. I do insist on factor 20 if he’s going to be out during the hottest parts of the day but he has never burned either. If he had a paper skin tone I’d be more vigilant.

We both go very ‘yellow’ during the winter and both feel energised from the sun. I’m a firm believer in Vit D and given we don’t burn, on balance, am OK with a few days of sun.

TheFaerieQueene · 07/07/2018 17:11

I don’t understand why anyone would sit in the sun with or without sunscreen. It is madness.

happymummy12345 · 07/07/2018 17:13

I wear factor 50+ every time it's higher than 15 degrees.
I once got burnt when the temp was 16 degrees. I don't take any chances at all.
I practically bath in the stuff I'm so sun intolerant. I never sit in the sun if I can help it. But I do burn very easily.
Can't beat a nice cool shower and some aftersun at the end of a hot sunny day as well. Even though I don't burn, I keep my aftersun in the fridge so it's nice and cold. Helps my skin feel refreshed.

I am allergic to most suncreams. I have only just (within the last couple of months) found one that I don't react to. I tend to stay out of the sun for that reason but it's not always possible especially on family days out.

SerenDippitty · 07/07/2018 17:31

Or that getting a “base tan” on a sun bed before you go on holiday will protect you from the “real” sun.. Shock

GreenBrick · 07/07/2018 17:34

Because I’ve never burnt

Because I don’t sit in the sun

Because I prefer loose layers and a hat to strapping vest tops.

My forearms are a golden colour but I’m not big on exposing skin or remaining in direct sun.

And no, at 40 my skin isn’t remotely wrinkly or do I look old...
