To not understand why some people won’t wear suncream?!

Currently sat in the garden and enjoying the sunshine with my factor 30 on... with the family and not one of them is wearing suncream.

I can see their skin burning.

They can see their skin burning.

But they think I’m weird for wearing suncream.

I don’t understand why some people would knowingly do this?!

Yup, that's a good one too. It's the foreign sun one that gets me though. As if it's a different sun!

katzensocken · 07/07/2018 17:38

I'm very, very pale, but I don't burn. I still wear sunscreen if I'm out in this weather (I don't go out very much because it's too humid). It doesn't matter if you don't burn, or even tan - invisible sun damage is still being done.

Like I said, I'm rarely out in the sun so have forgone sunscreen previously if I'm just out for a short time, as a result I have sun/age spots on my face that have sprung up in the past couple of years.

wrenika · 07/07/2018 17:40

I don't wear it. It feels disgusting on my skin and I would rather be careful than wear it. I don't lie in the sun and cook myself, so I don't feel I need it. I can only think of one occasion where I got burned and that was 15 years ago. I never wore it as a kid and I didn't get burned despite being outside playing all the time. I think people are too quick to slather themselves in it rather than thinking about whether they need it or not.

MalloryLaurel · 07/07/2018 17:42

This is why my dad has had skin cancer. He has to wear suncream now. Idiot.
He's a malignant psychopath. So he thought he didn't need it, it was for other people. Lesser than him.

Itchytights · 07/07/2018 17:44

Ignorance and arrogance. That’s all there is to it.

Itchytights · 07/07/2018 17:45

Wrenika

Your post sums up my previous post exactly

Elasticity · 07/07/2018 17:46

I put it on my right hand side of neck and face everyday because the way my commute to and from work is I always have the sun on my right side for 45 mins twice a day. It's so frustrating!

I agree the culture around sun cream is odd. People seem to revel in showing off their burn lines on social media?

JustDanceAddict · 07/07/2018 17:55

My ds has just been in a hot country and barely used any cream considering what I sent him with so I think slathering it on is prob not necessary but using some is esp on areas not exposed much. He had 30 factor.

Kingkiller · 07/07/2018 18:06

Hmm You don't need to lie in the sun and cook yourself to get burnt. You just have to be outside and not in the shade. Lots of people who say they never burn seem to mean they never burn severely. If you go red or pink (even if it turns brown later), then you damaged your skin.

I never ever lie in the sun or deliberately tan. I very rarely go on sun holidays. I still put on high factor sun cream, because I am out and about in the sunshine and I would burn a bit if I didn't. I find it childish to refuse to put sun cream on 'because it's yucky and messy'. That's the kind of reason a 5 year-old would give.

Parker231 · 07/07/2018 18:09

Why do people think because they are darker skinner or have tanned easily, that they don't need a good suncream? You are putting yourself at risk of skin cancer. So what it is greasy or you don't like the feel of it, you only sit in the shade, don't need it in the UK - you are still at significant risk.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 07/07/2018 18:09

I don’t wear sunscreen because I have olive skin and don’t burn. It isn’t the law you know!

halfwitpicker · 07/07/2018 18:10

You need vitamin d though remember. Scurvy has made its return.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 07/07/2018 18:10

I promised myself I’d wear suncream this year, on my face particularly as I have rosacea, but on my body (as I’m very sloppy and forget to reapply, plus I never burn so I forget to) and can honestly say I’m the most tanned I’ve ever been. How does that work?!

I used to be fastidious about applying factor 50 but then I had DS and by the time I have managed to wrestle it onto him I'm rushing out the door and don't do mine. I am turning 30 though so am making it a resolution!

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 07/07/2018 18:18

I put factor 50 on yesterday. I made sure the children in my class were repeatedly covered but I managed to miss a bit and it hurts. This is why I am a bit obsessed, that and the four skin cancers my Grandpa had removed.

To not understand why some people won’t wear suncream?!
adviceonthepox · 07/07/2018 18:22

I never burn so only put cream on if I'm going to be out in it all day or if I'm abroad. Same with the kids I put in on for School but not if we are just popping out for a bit.

Morerainplease · 07/07/2018 18:34

I'm in my 30s and I didn't think I'd get skin cancer either - I'm not a fan of the sun and don't spend much time out in it and usually wore sun cream when the sun was out. I had skin cancer last year and it scared the life out of me. I use UVA 5 star sun cream every day and avoid the sun as much as possible now, it's really just not worth the risk.

Ilovecornwalltoo · 07/07/2018 18:40

Personally, I hate suncream. It makes me feel clammy and sweaty, and then dirty because of that. On holiday it’s not so bad as I’d be in and out of the pool/sea.

Yup, can't stand the smell of it, either. I wear it if I'm going to be out somewhere with no shade, otherwise I avoid the sun in the middle of the day. I know how much sun I can get without burning.

Aeroflotgirl · 07/07/2018 18:42

I put it on my kids, but myself, nah I don't bother, unless I am sunbathing. Most of the time, I am in doors, or under the parasol in the garden. I am of Mediterranean descent, and my skin is olive, and tans very easily.

I forget...when we're going out I'm so busy making sure my dc have everything they need I totally forget about myself! Went to my dcs sports day the other day, they had hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water etc...it's only when watching them, I realised I was burning and had no water!

mirime · 07/07/2018 19:03

I wear a hat, stay covered up and in the shade - or indoors - as much as possible. I have been wearing 50 spf on and off, but it's been irritating my skin.

My aunt died of skin cancer so I do take the risk seriously and smother DS in suncream. I hope he's inherited my skin when it comes to the sun as DH burns if he looks out a window on a sunny day, but DH's when it comes to being sensitive to everything as I have a terrible time with shampoo, deodorant, moisturisers and so on.

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 07/07/2018 19:05

Mine was from standing in the sea with my back to the sun making sure my children didn't go in too far. I then forgot to reapply as I was making sure we all went to the toilet before our 2 hour coach ride! The joys of being a teacher.

Metoodear · 07/07/2018 19:08

Because I am black that’s why you post supposes every one is white and needs to

I actually need the vitamin d black and Asian people often suffer with a lack of it intances of cancer due to sin in black and Asians are very very low
