To not understand why some people won’t wear suncream?!

Currently sat in the garden and enjoying the sunshine with my factor 30 on... with the family and not one of them is wearing suncream.

I can see their skin burning.

They can see their skin burning.

But they think I’m weird for wearing suncream.

I don’t understand why some people would knowingly do this?!

Here’s a bit about choosing an effective sunscreen.

" And the having to wash it off at the end of the day."

? You don't have to wash it off. Do you wash off your moisturiser?

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2018 15:39

I think a lot of men think that creams and potions are women's things and it's just not manly to wear it. I see quite a few men with eczema who also don't moisturise for the same reason or they claim to 'forget', which is really not believable.

NotTakenUsername · 07/07/2018 15:39

It’s not the same as moisturiser. It clogs the pores quite badly.

If it is abusive, as has been claimed on occasion, to allow a child to get sunburnt... is sun cream available on prescription?

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2018 15:40

" If they can make a dry, clean feeling gel like that, why can't you buy similar in large sizes for body use?"

There's nothing to stop you putting it on your whole body. You'd just have to buy more of it.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2018 15:42

"In my youth I used sunbeds though and I'm thoroughly ashamed. "

Same here.

ShouldofWouldofCouldof · 07/07/2018 15:42

I only wear it if i know i will be out with out shade. I'd rather not blather my skin in manmade chemicals. Yes the sun carries a risk so use it wisely cover up and sit in the shade.

Devilishpyjamas · 07/07/2018 15:44

A quick google suggests that there’s still a difference of opinion in the relative contributions of UVA and UVB to melanoma.

Anyway I prefer clothing, shade, zinc, but of sunscreen and never sunbathe.

That actually makes me shudder... do people sleep in the grimy condition that suncream leaves them in?! 🤢

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2018 15:46

"Also, sun cream is unpleasant "

I don't get this. It's just like wearing body lotion. Maybe change brands if there's a problem with yours.

QueenGoblin · 07/07/2018 15:46

I don't get it either, I always hear 'I never wear sunscreen in England!', because apparently our sun is different. Hmm

I am not 100% white and I don't wear below factor 30. Since being on maternity leave (and so am out and about a fair bit) I wear the same as my son, factor 50. I have still tanned.

My whiter than white husband, who tends to burn at the mere mention of sunshine has not been wearing sunscreen even when we've been out for several hours walking. Whilst he hasn't burnt to a crisp, it still has not been kind to him and who knows what sort of long term sun damage he is causing.

I have a friend who is half white, half black and never wears sunscreen. When I've mentioned it to her, she has been baffled by why she would need to. She doesn't burn! She's black, none of her family wears any etc etc. I pointed out that she is still half white, and sunscreen is about more than avoiding burning. She is dabbling into using it now, but is still very skeptical.

@thenightsky

Banana boat do a powder dry suncream that doesn’t leave the greasy feel. I don’t like the smell particularly.. but may be worth a try for you?

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 07/07/2018 15:47

Sun cream is nothing like body lotion! 😂😂

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2018 15:48

"every single suncream gives me spots"

Have you tried ones specifically for the face? Many of them are very light and non-greasy.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2018 15:49

What do you mean Not? It's a cream for the body. Same thing. I'm wearing both types every day at the moment.

SparkyTheCat · 07/07/2018 15:49

Because the perfumes and other chemicals in suncream trigger my eczema. Unfortunately I also have the kind of pale skin which goes from 0-lobster in about 10 minutes, so I stay indoors or, if I must go out in the hottest part of the day, cover up and stay in the shade.

ragged · 07/07/2018 15:49

I don't understand people who don't try to avoid sunburns. I think I stop being with OP at that point. Our household is living proof of 'white' people who don't wear sunblock & get outside a fair amount & still rarely get burnt.... I won't say never burnt, true. I couldn't be so perfect with sunblock as to reduce the risk to zero, as long as we still went in sun at all.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2018 15:50

"do people sleep in the grimy condition that suncream leaves them in?! 🤢"

It doesn't leave me in a grimy condition! It's absorbed by my skin, just like any moisturiser. There's no need to wash it off.
Are you wearing such a thick layer that it just sits on your skin or what?

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 07/07/2018 15:51

@Gwen

If you’re using both I don’t understand how you can’t tell the difference? Suncream is a much heavier, greasier cream which leaves the skin clammy. It doesn’t absorb.. it kind of sits on the surface.

And no, I don’t use too much... I use it sparingly as I hate the feel of it.

InTheLightOfTheMoon · 07/07/2018 15:53

I dont wear any but then I am not white and have never been burned by the sun. also dont put it on the kids, never been burnt!

NotTakenUsername · 07/07/2018 15:54

Moisturiser penetrates the skin to, well to moisturise!

Suncream is more of a barrier cream (think of it as similar to slathering yourself in sudocream).

It should be washed off just like make up before you go to bed.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/07/2018 15:54

"Suncream is a much heavier, greasier cream which leaves the skin clammy. It doesn’t absorb.. it kind of sits on the surface."

You must be using the wrong type.

The body butters I use straight after the shower are thicker than the sun creams I have.

My sun cream absorbs.
