Sweetcorn - AIBU or is DH?

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 07/07/2018 13:36

Making tuna pasta salad for lunch today. I opened some sweetcorn and DH stood, staring at me, as I banged the bottom of the can to get the chunks out. He asked me "why are you banging it" and I explained that I don't like to leave any sweetcorn/beans in tins because it worries me that the bean leftover will be lonely and not fulfil it's purpose in life.

DH says that I'm officially batshit and that he's never heard anything so ridiculous. He said he'd give me £10 to leave two sweetcorn pieces in the bottom of the tin and I couldn't do it.

Surely it's not BU, it's just a little quirk?

I am also guilty of this Blush fortunately no one at home has noticed yet

NewYearNewMe18 · 07/07/2018 13:38

Take the £10 and two bits have escaped being boiled alive.

LunaTrap · 07/07/2018 13:38

I do the same, but I would leave two in the bottom together because I tell myself that they are best friends (or married!) so they won't be lonely.

GodsGodsGods · 07/07/2018 13:39

Now I'm worried that I don't check and am sad for all the kernels that I may have stopped fulfill their destiny

ponygirlcurtis · 07/07/2018 13:41

Me too. All that effort to grow, be harvested and canned only to be chucked away. It also really bugs me that DS doesn't scrape the yoghurt pot absolutely clean, he leaves loads. Makes me twitch.

I hope you’re not being unreasonable. When I use a jar of ready made pasta sauce I always put a little bit of water into the jar and give it a good shake so that I get as much out as possible. I tell myself I’m being thrifty.

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 07/07/2018 13:42

I empty the tin into a sieve and any sweetcorn left in the tin is caught by rinising the tin and then pouring that into the sieve before rinsing the corn.
So a nice bath before chewy death.Grin

I also fret about bits of rubbish being thrown in separate bins - empty pockets into bin, find one more bit of rubbish in there later on. Worry that it won’t have it pocket mates to support it through this new adventure.

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 07/07/2018 13:42

He ibvu and cruel. Poor, lonely sweet corn!

Eppia · 07/07/2018 13:43

Oh god, I do this too. And when I open a sachet where you tear the top off (e.g. cup a soup), I always tuck the torn piece back in the empty packet - because it’s the baby and needs to be with its mummy... Grin

Luckily DS is the same and it’s how I get him to eat all the veg on his plate!

EatTheChocolateTeapot · 07/07/2018 13:44

YANBU, it’s not batshit not to waste food. Although I pick it up with the serving spoon instead of banging the can.

ScarlettDarling · 07/07/2018 13:45

It's why I have to clear my plate at every meal. Hate the thought of a solitary pea or potato being chucked away without its mates. I'd manage for a tenner though!!

Obiandmillie · 07/07/2018 13:45

Also - beans on toast. All the beans have to be together on the toast - you can't let one fall onto the plate on its own as it will feel lonely and get cold without the toast and other beans to keep it warm.

I've always done this too. Could never leave a poor lonely bean behind crying in the empty tin without the rest of its bean family.

bluerunningshoes · 07/07/2018 13:51

yabu using tinned veg.

but noooo to leaving any in the packet, what a waste of food.

TheAntiBoop · 07/07/2018 13:51

If you are recycling the can you have to rinse it out anyway. Better to have the sweet corn in the food than having to fish it out the plug hole

FlyingDandelionSeed · 07/07/2018 13:56

I always make sure I get as much food as possible out of the can because I've been seriously poor (when it was a necessity) and even now I'm not, I dislike waste. I know lots of people are sneery about such things (I've met people who deliberately enjoy waste because it shows how rich they are). I think my way is better for the planet.

Logic about sentient emotional sweetcorn is a bit batty, but charmingly so, imho.

There's a thread in Classics you'll appreciate OP...seems you're not alone Wink

My mugs are in couples. Some are sets, like the Mr and Mrs from our honeymoon and the lord and lady of the manor set. So the ones that are not in a pair have been coupled up. My uni mug lives with I love spreadsheets mug. moomin lives with teacups etc.

When DH makes tea he puts them in the wrong couples and it's so annoying. just realised this is massively outting

Shumpalumpa · 07/07/2018 14:01

@ConferencePear

I do that too!

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 07/07/2018 14:01

Ahh I love all of these responses, DH was fully expecting me to be shot down in flames with my tinned nonsense, I'm off to gloat and tell him the MN jury have decreed #nobeanleftbehind to be a worthy cause!

YANBU OP.
I've told this daft thing before on here -

Bought a lovely teddy for DD4 a couple of years ago. Lady took the money and carefully put Ted in a big reusable paper bag. As she put him in she fumbled about and said 'oh, lets get him the right way up ...'.

Then both of us at the same time muttered quite seriously 'so he can breathe ...'.

WeirdCatLady · 07/07/2018 14:04

I agree, how heartless to leave a bean or whatever. Their sole purpose in life is to be eaten. How can you deny them their life’s goal?

glamorousgrandmother · 07/07/2018 14:04

One of my grandsons used to apologise to each baked bean before he ate it. Lunchtime took forever.

Oysterbabe · 07/07/2018 14:06

Everyone has weird quirks like this don't they? I hate unplugging my mobile phone before it's fully charged, I feel like this will leave the phone frustrated and unfulfilled.
