Mumsnet classics

to eat a pea because I feel sorry for it.

I have just eaten a cherry tomato that I didn't really want (last one, bit bruised and squishy) because I 'felt sorry for it' and thought it would be sad if it didn't get eaten like it's friends...

I often do this with peas as well.

And other small pieces of food

Confused

I try to tell myself that it's ridiculous "Jaded it's just food, it doesn't have feelings FFS"

But still I find myself adding the manky mushroom to the risotto so it doesn't feel left out.

Anyone?

My mum brought us like that, saying go on eat it or it'll be sad.
This went for anything that was just the last on the plate.
Me and my siblings used to just cut them in half and I still do it Grin.

I do this too Blush

thought it was just me

but I also equip soft toys with feelings and put them upright so they don't hurt their heads and pick them off the floor so they don't get cold Hmm

I'm feeling kinda sorry for the big fuck off cake I have in the fridge.

I think I better eat it.

Hahaha, I do that too! Oh and Trinity I definitely do the soft toy thing. In fact, in an NCT class just this week when we were bathing, changing and swaddling dolls as practice, my husband had to tell me to stop talking to the dolls to soothe them while I did it...

Oh yes the soft toys too.

They have to 'cuddle' each other so they don't get scared Hmm

I do this too. I'll even make sure the last grain of rice sticking to the saucepan is eaten, as otherwise it'll feel lonely and rejected.
If, for instance, a manky grape simply has to be thrown away, then it will be thrown away with another grape so it doesn't feel like it's being singled out...

Everything has feelings. I have even been known to apologise to a door for slamming it too heavily Blush

Kalypso that is actually a genius idea. I eat many things I don't want so as not to offend, when actually I could just find a friend for them to chat to in the bin.

But then you have to 'select' the friend

Oh dear. That might not work...

My daughter used to feel sorry for her dolls if she got a new doll. She would make a fuss of them and tell them she still loved them. She would also try to ignore the new doll for a few days !

I can't bear it if there is a baked bean left in the tin. I have to scrape them ALL out. The thought of one poor bean, going through all the processing/canning/travelling along with all the other beans and, by cruel chance, being LEFT BEHIND and going straight into the bin and missing the climax of everything they've been 'trained' for - no way man, I couldn't let it happen.

Goodness knows how long they've been canned up together so by the time you've opened the tin they must be all really close friends, like a regiment preparing for battle - and all they must have talked about during the long dark months in the tin is the point at which they will 'go over the top' and be part of a meal.

I couldn't let a single one miss out on that.

Odd peas and things go in the dogs' dinner. Squishy or wrinkled tomatoes go into a bag and into the freezer for tomato-based sauces. I couldn't eat a wrinkled, squishy one but bashed up in a sauce it's fine.

Oh god you are all madGrin

I've never thought that food has feelings. I must be a hard old cow.

I actually always leave a bit of food on my plate.

I'm going to start feeling really guilty now Sad

Oooh, I do this sort of thing too! It has obviously rubbed off on ds too, as I once caught him having an earnest conversation with a cherry he was about to eat, telling it it was just about to go and join its friends in his stomach! Blush

I think you can fill in scratches in wood with nuts, Proudnscary, a bit like French-polishing... or maybe that's wistful thinking? Grin

Its called anthropomorphising things, attributing human feelings to non human objects.

I do it too!!!

Yes definitely to all of this, glad it's not just me...

Does anyone remember that Bird's Eye Coutry Club advert, with the rubbishy veg getting turned away from the posh gates? Seem to remember that that back-fired on Bird's Eye, as they had completely failed to understand that we're a nation of sentimental vegetable lovers...
