Sweetcorn - AIBU or is DH?

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 07/07/2018 13:36

Making tuna pasta salad for lunch today. I opened some sweetcorn and DH stood, staring at me, as I banged the bottom of the can to get the chunks out. He asked me "why are you banging it" and I explained that I don't like to leave any sweetcorn/beans in tins because it worries me that the bean leftover will be lonely and not fulfil it's purpose in life.

DH says that I'm officially batshit and that he's never heard anything so ridiculous. He said he'd give me £10 to leave two sweetcorn pieces in the bottom of the tin and I couldn't do it.

Surely it's not BU, it's just a little quirk?

You can't recycle if the tin isn't empty and rinsed, so you're being very reasonable. Quirky, but reasonable.

SoupDragon · 07/07/2018 14:06

Totally and utterly batshit.

But I do it too.

AdoraBell · 07/07/2018 14:07

I also try to get every scrap of food out of a tin/packet/saucepan, but I would have taken the tenner he offered and get myself something frivolous 😆

ProustianMadeleine · 07/07/2018 14:10

You are being totally unreasonable for liking sweetcorn in the first place Grin

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 07/07/2018 14:10

Surely it’s normal to not waste food? Even if it’s just two bits of sweet corn?

If the question was ‘AIBU to scrape out tins and jars to make sure I don’t waste any’ that’s fine, it’s you giving a purpose to it that’s weird!

kelper · 07/07/2018 14:11

Oh god I do this too!! I give every inanimate object feelings, it makes my life so difficult because I hate giving things to charity shops (Especially cuddlies and books that DS loved when he was little)
I think theres a name for it but its jumped out of my head at the moment. See, even my thoughts have lives 🙄

Juells · 07/07/2018 14:11

I've always felt I have to be fair to both my feet, so if I'm climbing steps I get a teenshy bit annoyed if there's an uneven number. One foot will have done more work than the other...

dementedma · 07/07/2018 14:13

you guys are completely nuts! Grin
DS (16) hates it when i leave the washing out if it looks like rain and always brings it in because it will be sad if it gets rained on!

HildaZelda · 07/07/2018 14:14

Am I the only one who thought this was going to be about listeria?

Celebelly · 07/07/2018 14:15

I have a weird thing for those teeny tiny little grapes. They really bring me joy.

speakout · 07/07/2018 14:16

I would have taken the money for keeping two kernels in the tin.

At least then they would have a friend each and not be lonely.

One kernel is a different matter.

CheshireChat · 07/07/2018 14:17

I thought this would be about the listeria outbreak.

I do the tin thing as well and a pasta salad is a good idea for our lunch so thanks

JustJoinedRightNow · 07/07/2018 14:18

I love this thread.
I’ve done this for years, and like a PP my life also is hard because of it! It’s a real thing! Giving emotions and feelings to inanimate objects.
I like to think it means I’m compassionate and caring (if not a tiny bit of a loon!)
Good on you OP, make sure those corn kernels aren’t left behind.

Neverender · 07/07/2018 14:25

Hahaa! I do this - I feel they're not fulfilling their full potential if they're left in the can.

But I'm a weirdo and buy broken bars of chocolate because I feel sorry for them, and that no one else will want them...

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 07/07/2018 14:27

I have a weird thing for those teeny tiny little grapes. They really bring me joy.

I always eat the little ones with a big one, so it's with it's mum. Oh God what is wrong with us, we need help, don't we? Confused

Takfujimoto · 07/07/2018 14:32

I do this and DD has obviously caught my crazy on because she wouldn't pick the strawberries from our patch because some of the 'baby' strawberries would be all alone in the dark until they grew up😳

So I had to go covert and do some ninja berry picking when she went to bed.

I also eat the teeny tiny/poorly coated/ higgledy piggledy malteasers first instead of the big shiny tasty bastards.
🙁😂

SugarIsAmazing · 07/07/2018 14:33

I agree with your husband, you're batshit!

JustJoinedRightNow · 07/07/2018 14:33

Haha oh god I think we do need help! Glad to know we aren’t alone though.

(Loved the PP saying they ate a baby grape with its Mum)

Crinkle77 · 07/07/2018 14:34

You're husband is right. You're barmy! I don't leave anything in the tin cos I don't like waste. Not cos i"n worried it won't fulfil its purpose.

Ellie56 · 07/07/2018 14:39
Hmm

Yep. Totally officially batshit.

Maybeicanhelp · 07/07/2018 14:40

Is 'anthropomorphism' the word you are looking for, JustJoined?

SuperL · 07/07/2018 14:40

I have found my people

Husband IBVVVVVVU. You can LTB over this

InfiniteVariety · 07/07/2018 14:41

YABVVVVU to put sweetcorn in anything. It is food of the devil.
(misses point of thread)

runbeerrunbeer · 07/07/2018 14:44

I always leave an inch of coffee at the bottom of my cup. It drives dh potty. It stems from uni days when I got to the bottom of my coffee cup (made by one of my flat mates), only to find at the bottom, what must have been a pube. Envy

I now, chose to live the life of denial. I chose not to see what is lurking at the bottom, even when I've made it and know for sure the cup is clean. Over the years this has sadly spread to cereal and soup bowl denial... sorry. I'm clearly a waster. With issues!!

Maybeicanhelp · 07/07/2018 14:47

runbeer, DH always leaves a drop of tea or coffee in his mug 'for the fairies' Grin.
