AIBU here? Noisy chickens

Genuinely unsure as to who is being unreasonable here. I have 4 hens which I keep in my back garden. At this time of year they like to get up early and make a fuss as soon as it’s light.

We live in a fairly built up areas so in order to minimise disruption to neighbours I lock them in at 8ish and let them out at 7ish when I get up. This stops them making a racket at really unsociable hours but, especially in this heat, I really can’t keep them locked in the dark much after 7am. I’ve had them 3 years and never had any complaint from neighbours, in fact most of the neighbours seem to really like them and I try to keep them on side by regularly giving them eggs.

I work from home, my office window is about 5 foot from the chicken run and I rarely hear them. The only time I do hear them is if one of them does something stupid like knock their water over or fall off their ladder. Then there’s a couple of minutes where they run around shrieking that the sky is falling before looking embarrassed and being quiet again. They’re also a bolshy bunch and whenever a cat comes into the garden they all run towards it (still contained in the run though) and cat normally legs it and doesn’t come back.

Enter new neighbour. She has a cat who’s sole purpose in life is to try and work out how to get into the chicken run. Cat is undeterred by mental chickens charging at it and instead spends hours upon hours pacing round the run, hissing, putting paws through the gaps and pouncing on the roof of the run. This makes the chickens run around squaking. New neighbour works night shifts and has demanded I do something about the chickens. The chickens which have always been quiet until she came with her cat.

I’ve told her the only way that they’ll be quiet is if she keeps her cat in. I admit I don’t know much about cats but I thought they were more active at night? If cat was just out at night chickens would be asleep and unbothered. New neighbour told me that would be cruel to only let it out at night, that cats have a right to roam and that I need to find a way to keep chickens quiet. Apparently she will be reporting me to the council for noise disturbance.

I have tried dissuading cat from garden - spikes on top of wall, lion poo and squirting it with a water pistol (which neighbour yells at me for doing if she spots me). Water gun results in cat jumping in the air, giving me evils for a couple of minutes before resuming chicken stalking.

TLDR new neighbours cat is pissing off my chickens which makes them squawk. Neighbour thinks this is my fault and I need to stop it. I think her cat is a bit of a twat who should get a new hobby.

Broken11girl, just chill. The cat isn’t bait for a fight. This is just about allowing the chickens and the cats to meet, allowing them to establish a hierarchy, and hopefully allowing peace to return to the neighbourhood (and stop the neighbour whinging).

Supervised introductions of animals make sense. Would you ‘report’ someone who was introducing their new puppy or kitten to their existing pets?

HopefullyAnonymous · 06/07/2018 10:55

*great

phlewf · 06/07/2018 10:56

Extremely interested in the outcome of this because I am not allowed chickens because apparently my cats will eat them. According to dp who has had chickens before and doesn’t want chickens again.

Also where does one get lion poo? Do you just turn up at the zoo with a wheel barrow?

lynmilne65 · 06/07/2018 11:01

From a garden centre!

Confusedbeetle · 06/07/2018 11:01

this is one of the crazy situations you get in with urban chicken keeping and cat keeping. Cats need huge territories and freedom, and chickens need to be free range and only in at night. All a bit potty really. Cat and chicken keeper

Clubcuts · 06/07/2018 11:02

I want chickens! Misses point of thread

ShapelyBingoWing · 06/07/2018 11:02

I'm sure that would breach laws about keeping livestock under control.

Oh for the love of God, unclench! They would be under control. They're contained on a patch of private property, the owner of which has no obligation to make a homely environment for cats and certainly isn't liable for anything that might come of said cats tormenting or attacking her animals.

OP, please do let us know how it goes. I'd be a bit more sensitive to the neighbour if it wasn't her cat tormenting the chickens.

I assume Broken doesn't eat egg or chicken....

Yesiamhappy · 06/07/2018 11:06

Chickens are not vermin - they are amazing pets! Very friendly and cuddly, easy to train and amazing to watch them together. They have such different characters - our Brahma & silkie were total mother hens when we had chicks - just the cutest thing to watch

chillpizza · 06/07/2018 11:10

I think broken really is broken.

On the laws and rules of livestock maybe the cat would be classed as bothering livestock and be in more trouble. Just like dogs and sheep. Although I’d like to see that in court.
What happened?
Her chickens attacked my cat
Her livestock where in your garden or roaming free?
No in her garden.
So you cat entered a dedicated area for livestock?
Yes...
Stop your animal bothering livestock
But... but.. but...
Grin

My girls thankfully are on nice big plot of land with full permissions.

@Broken11Girl our cats made my sons cry loads of times. Scratched them whilst playing.

So are we to hate cats for that?

IllBeAtTheBarIfYouNeedMe · 06/07/2018 11:26

Ive read some pretty unhinged unreasonable things on mumsnet but I think broken11 might just win it

Icklepup · 06/07/2018 11:34

How can anyone think cats are more active at night, that's hamsters!

DramaAlpaca · 06/07/2018 11:36

This thread has made me want to get chickens, they sound fun. My cat wouldn't be impressed though.

FedUpLetDown · 06/07/2018 11:39

And... the cat is gone! I clambered on the roof and released the hens, cat stood on top of the run hissing at them, chickens wandered off to investigate neighbour who was stood in the middle of the drive, neighbour started dancing about as they were trying to peck the buckle on her sandal, cat jumps down from run and starts stalking towards hens, hens spot cat and charge in unison with wings flapping and heads down, cat jumps straight up in the air and runs away from garden, neighbour follows after her cat whilst telling me to put get the chickens back in, neighbour climbs over my gate while chickens try and peck her buckles, I throw some spaghetti into the chicken run with amazing accuracy, shout ‘chickens, spaghetti!’, the chickens charge back to the run, I close the run door with my stick and descend from the garage roof.

I have filmed it all but I’m reluctant to post as I’ve remembered I’ve started several threads bitching about my dh under this username. Is there a way to get stills from a video filmed on iPhone? There’s some brilliant bits where neighbour is Irish dancing to prevent chickens getting her feet.

I don’t know a thing about cats ickle. I thought they were mostly busy exploring in night time. Whenever I see them in the day they’re sleeping.
