AIBU here? Noisy chickens

Genuinely unsure as to who is being unreasonable here. I have 4 hens which I keep in my back garden. At this time of year they like to get up early and make a fuss as soon as it’s light.

We live in a fairly built up areas so in order to minimise disruption to neighbours I lock them in at 8ish and let them out at 7ish when I get up. This stops them making a racket at really unsociable hours but, especially in this heat, I really can’t keep them locked in the dark much after 7am. I’ve had them 3 years and never had any complaint from neighbours, in fact most of the neighbours seem to really like them and I try to keep them on side by regularly giving them eggs.

I work from home, my office window is about 5 foot from the chicken run and I rarely hear them. The only time I do hear them is if one of them does something stupid like knock their water over or fall off their ladder. Then there’s a couple of minutes where they run around shrieking that the sky is falling before looking embarrassed and being quiet again. They’re also a bolshy bunch and whenever a cat comes into the garden they all run towards it (still contained in the run though) and cat normally legs it and doesn’t come back.

Enter new neighbour. She has a cat who’s sole purpose in life is to try and work out how to get into the chicken run. Cat is undeterred by mental chickens charging at it and instead spends hours upon hours pacing round the run, hissing, putting paws through the gaps and pouncing on the roof of the run. This makes the chickens run around squaking. New neighbour works night shifts and has demanded I do something about the chickens. The chickens which have always been quiet until she came with her cat.

I’ve told her the only way that they’ll be quiet is if she keeps her cat in. I admit I don’t know much about cats but I thought they were more active at night? If cat was just out at night chickens would be asleep and unbothered. New neighbour told me that would be cruel to only let it out at night, that cats have a right to roam and that I need to find a way to keep chickens quiet. Apparently she will be reporting me to the council for noise disturbance.

I have tried dissuading cat from garden - spikes on top of wall, lion poo and squirting it with a water pistol (which neighbour yells at me for doing if she spots me). Water gun results in cat jumping in the air, giving me evils for a couple of minutes before resuming chicken stalking.

TLDR new neighbours cat is pissing off my chickens which makes them squawk. Neighbour thinks this is my fault and I need to stop it. I think her cat is a bit of a twat who should get a new hobby.

"GruciusMalfoy

Tell her to get some earplugs, she lives in a built up area, so she needs to accept it'll be noisy at points."

I'm surprised the neighbour doesn't since she works night shifts. At least I'm guessing she doesn't because earplugs and a fan for white noise should block out most things...except a snoring partner.

Tbh I wouldn’t keep chickens in most built up areas. The place we live is a big fishing town though and we live right on the harbour. The boats come in anytime from 4am and then the fish market is most of the morning so it’s not exactly a sleepy little suburb where my chickens are the only disturbance.

I’m going to climb on top of my garage and use a stick to open the chicken run. They get very peck happy, especially when I haven’t let them out of their run for months. Cat is out there at the moment pretending it’s a lion and stalking around the run. I am determined to film it and see the expression on its face when it realised that the tables have turned and it is now the prey.

I’m going to knock next door and tell her that I’m releasing the chickens. She’s still up so she can come and witness it too. I want her to see that I am doing what I can to get them to be quiet.

My chickens used to come into the kitchen to steal the cat food. The cats would be 😮 whilst the birds gobbled up their food 😂

UterusUterusGhali · 06/07/2018 09:52

Please record it!

thecatsthecats · 06/07/2018 09:52

We had gaggles of cats and chickens as children.

The cats didn't fucking dare go for even the strayest of chicks. The hens were boss, and they knew it.

On the other hand, I have witnessed some spectacular showdowns between lambs and cockerels. My cockerel used to get chased by the lamb in the next field, and would flap and peck at his face. Hours of fun.

TattyFrench · 06/07/2018 09:53

Your neighbour is being very unreasonable! I hope she comes to watch the 'unleashing', don't warm her the chickens will go demented, let her stand in your garden right in the middle of where the run opens for the best view!
Tell her that you've decided she's right and you're going to let her catch kill all of your chickens. Except it won't and she and her twatty cat will skulk off with their tails between their legs.

Please video it.

Yesiamhappy · 06/07/2018 10:30

I miss my chickens!! They are just the best pets - so friendly and fun to watch

Never had a problem with cats or dogs only bloody foxes 🤬🤬🤬

Looking forward to the video!

I don’t know what I’m enjoying more about this... that your chickens are SO ferocious you have to stand on top of the garage to release them... or that you’re inviting the NDN to witness her cats demise!! Lolololololololol!

Broken11Girl · 06/07/2018 10:45

It's not fucking funny. Do you all want to see a dog fight? Hilarious.

Broken11Girl · 06/07/2018 10:46

Actually yes you probably would, clearly with a cat as bait since seeing a cat torn apart is LOLZ

Oh calm down Broken, the cat is annoying the chooks so it's only fair. Also what do you think 4 chickens are going to do a cat? Peck it to death? Cats have legs you know and can escape the garden. Ridiculous you'd even suggest it's on the same level as dog fighting Hmm

ProfessorMoody · 06/07/2018 10:49

I didn't really fancy a fuck this morning, thanks.

Broken - you do sound broken. You do realise that a chicken can't actually harm a cat, yes?

Also, they aren't vermin. They are delightful birds with beautiful characters.

HTH.

FedUpLetDown · 06/07/2018 10:49

broken I’m not breaching livestock laws by letting chickens run around my garden 😂. I’m not going to let them start running down a motorway. No ones joking about anyone harming anything. I’m going to let chickens run around my garden, not set a bunch of rabid dogs on a kitten.

I do however apologise on behalf of chickens everywhere for a once making your baby niece cry. I hope there was no long term damage and that in time she will be able to go on to lead a relatively normal life.

The cars not going to get torn apart broken. It’s going to run away while some chickens flap in it’s general direction.
