To be mad that some woman took her infected child to Tesco covered in fresh chicken pox?

Isn't it contagious like that??
I thought they had to be dried out.
What about people with compromised immune systems or very small babies.
She was with a friend buying sweets, not urgent!! Wtf!!
It is contagious like that isn't it?

*If it's such an issue, stay indoors or get vaccinated.

I'm not going to be told to stay in for a whole week! It would have risked my mental health declining.*

Are you as stupid as this sounds, or was it accidental?

If you have CP, you’d have to stay indoors for a week. It’s not going to kill you.
Immunocompromised people or those who can’t be vaccinated would have to stay in FOREVER. It’s not a week indoors while already ill.

You think a potential impact on your mental health is more important than other people’s lives? Utterly disgusting.

I’ll be sure to tell my friend who had a still birth as a result of CP, and the Mum I know whose daughter is blind after attending a CP party, where they stand.

crispysausagerolls · 04/07/2018 17:56

People are selfish, selfish arseholes. Taking a child out KNOWING you could be infecting others, including pregnant women and the elderly or immunosupressed is beyond cunty.

crispysausagerolls · 04/07/2018 17:57

SinkGirl

I thought the poster must have been joking - surely no one is that fucking selfish? Your poor friend, makes me so angry

Fairynormal · 04/07/2018 18:14

My daughter is a teenage mum type and would never dream of taking her daughter out if she had chicken pox. I am stay at home mum and had 5 children, the oldest 4 had chicken pox one after the other and I never took them out whilst they were still spotty.
NHS guidelines state You'll need to stay away from school, nursery or work until all the spots have crusted over. This is usually 5 days after the spots first appeared.
Perhaps the lady who took her child to Tesco, had read this and as Tesco wasn't mentioned, thought it would be ok! My DH has no immune system due to medication her takes, catching something like chicken pox would be really serious for him, and there are no doubt hundreds of people in similar situations. Personally I think lots of people have a devil may care attitude, and don't care if they or their children infect others, and that has nothing to do with teenage mum types

Typically my husband was on a work trip when my eldest got chicken pox, we have no family locally to help. I just sent a message to mums I know from the local baby groups asking if anyone was going shopping could they pick up some things. Of course they did because we all would if asked (someone else also dropped wine off which was very kind!)

I know that people are sometimes contagious without us knowing and we spread things about that way (like before the CP rash appears) but that doesn't mean we shouldn't reduce the risk of spread by quarantining ourselves when we know we're infectious. Isn't it common sense?

Wittow · 04/07/2018 18:46

haha jeez live and let live.... In 1978, my mother took my brother (with chicken pox) on an aeroplane to Majorca - she made him wear a polo neck jumper to cover the spots haha!

mummabubs · 04/07/2018 18:53

"People cannot stay in for over 7 days isolated".

Of course they can @Jeni29. Only a few months ago I stayed at home for 10 days with my 5 month old, who had caught chicken pox because someone else had been selfish enough to take their child out and about with chicken pox. I'm not saying it was easy, it wasn't and I nearly went mad and it was hard logistically as we have no additional family to support us so I was completely alone when my husband goes to work. But I purposefully kept us in for that time because to take him out whilst contagious would have been beyond selfish of me.

YANBU OP, not at all.

I'm sure Ollivander on this thread would have laughed and laughed if she was on that plane..

Bearfrills · 04/07/2018 19:37

People cannot stay in for over 7 days isolated.

I stayed in for nearly four weeks in a row when three of my DC caught it one after the other. They obviously caught it from DC1 who was first to come down with it but he had a mild case, DC2 had a moderate case - her second case actually as she'd already had it when she was younger - and DC3 was very ill with it and several of the spots became infected, he also had them in his ears so lying down was painful and he had to have his hearing checked afterwards to make sure they hadn't done any damage, he still has scars.

Three children all reacted differently to the same infection source. Pox Parties are stupid ideas, you don't know if your DC will be one of the ones who reacts badly and becomes really poorly so why risk deliberate infection?

Complications of chickenpox include:

  • sepsis
  • infection
  • pneumonia
  • encephalitis
  • stroke
  • necrotising soft tissue infections
  • toxic shock syndrome

You are most infectious before you even break out in spots so it makes no difference being out and about.

You are not most infectious before spots appear. You are infectious from 24-48 before spots appear and you stay infectious until they have all scabbed over which usually takes around five days but can be more/less than five days as it varies from person to person.

Chickenpox is highly contagious and just 10-15 minutes in the same room as someone in the infectious stage is enough to infect you. That's not touching, not sitting close by, not sharing utensils, etc, but simply being in the same room.

Ollivander84 · 04/07/2018 19:39

Yes would have been fun tracking down a hospital to explain my condition, taking meds and then maybe being off work sick with no pay Hmm
Bizarrely people seem to understand chemo = stay away but despite the fact I'm immunosuppressed for exactly the same reason (neutropenia) people don't get it

I take some risks in that I eat fresh fruit, veg and salad, meats etc but I've never been ill from those and I tend not to get stomach problems - usually infections, chest, tonsillitis etc

ReservoirDogs · 04/07/2018 19:41

Why was the family there with the very ill old lady? Surely that is worthy of your scorn too? Although I agree no reason for child with chicken pox to be there either.

Bearfrills · 04/07/2018 19:44

What's to say if I went out alone, that I wouldn't pass the CP on?? You know......carriers

Bullshit.

There has never been a document case of indirect transmission of the virus by an immune person so using the excuse of "I could be a carrier anyway" to justify taking an infectious child to public places is a load of crap.

Mummyoflittledragon · 04/07/2018 19:44

Phosphorus
I cannot believe you have come back to spout more rubbish. You were even told by an infectious disease specialist you sound ignorant. Does an anonymous forum really give you so much that confidence that you do not not care if you sound like an absolute idiot?

HyacinthsBucket70 · 04/07/2018 19:48

Ollivander84 that sounds appalling. You must dread leaving the house, knowing there are people like those on this thread spreading their kids germs around without thought for anyone other than themselves. Makes me think of the quote that "only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity" Hmm

AussieOzborn · 04/07/2018 19:53

This vile thread should be deleted. To berate a mum for taking her kid with chickenpox to Tesco is nasty. She probably had nobody to look after the kid so she took him/her. So what? But if you learn that she left the kid home alone while she popped into Tesco then you will berate her for that, you disgusting pack of hyenas.
You can get the chickenpox virus virtually from anywhere, the bus, the shops, restaurants... you name it. I got chickenpox when I was about 30 and not a single soul around me that time had chickenpox so I must have gotten it only god knows where. And I was fine, apart from being very sleepy for about 2 days and no appetite for about 3-4 days.

LanguidLobster · 04/07/2018 19:55

Ollivander 🐱

What do you put on chickenpox nowadays? A friend said the other day his has it and I asked if he was using that pink calamine stuff but he said something else was prescribed nowadays

Ohb0llocks · 04/07/2018 19:56

I managed to stay in for 4 weeks when mine got them. The only exceptions we're taking them for a drive in the car, and to the Doctors (I phoned in advance, had my mum wait with them in the car until they were signed in and the separate waiting room unlocked for them to wait in in isolation)

First one got it mild (covered in spots but not ill), still ended up on antibiotics for infected spots.

My 7 (at the time) month old sported a 39.5 fever that wouldn't break for days, didn't sleep a wink, and ended up having to change to stronger antibiotics after 3 days of flucloxacillin, as his infection wasn't budging (skin and concerns about his chest)

My 5 year old stepson was the illest I have ever seen him, he was whimpering and crying for help in his sleep. He also ended up on antibiotics.

And I was meticulous and I mean meticulous on hygiene to try and prevent any infections.

For those reading, please do not assume that pox is a mild childhood illness. Mine were all poorly, there are people on this forum that have lost children due to chickenpox.

I'd have been absolutely devastated if I'd have purposefully exposed my children to it.

SugarIsAmazing · 04/07/2018 19:57

I took mine out with Chicken Pox Hmm I thought it was contagious just before the spots broke out.

Ohb0llocks · 04/07/2018 19:57

@AussieOzborn you probably got them off some dimwit who thinks it's ok to take a child out with chickenpox.

Belle12345 · 04/07/2018 20:04

This never ceases to amaze me
I work in a busy supermarket and the amount of children I've seen with chicken pox is unbelievable
When my son had it we never went outside for 2 weeks more or less single parent and I coped (just ) it's dangerous for pregnant women and the elderly and generally worse in adults

Phosphorus · 04/07/2018 20:07

Mummyoflittledragon believe what and who you like, but it is a fact that for the vast majority of people it is better to catch CP as a young child, and no harm will come to them.

Can you refute that, politely, with any scientific evidence at all?

Exceptionally few previously healthy children develop really serious reactions. So most sensible parents expose their children, or vaccinate them while young.

What good does shielding them from it do? They will likely suffer more later.

And the poster claiming to be a specialist could be a shoe salesman in real life for all you know.

They certainly seem to have difficulty expressing themselves in a logical and dispassionate fashion.

sausagerollsontheside · 04/07/2018 20:11

I want to address some things:

This isn't a vile thread

Secondly the elderly lady was being taken shopping we were beside each other in the freezer section.
I have been very very ill and I used to be glad if I could get out.
She wasn't contagious I don't think just very frail.

OP, it is not you who decides whether it is vile or not.

It's like you are a murderer and you kill someone and then you declare that murder is not a crime.

Can you comprehend this?

KatharinaRosalie · 04/07/2018 20:17

She probably had nobody to look after the kid so she took him/her.

How about the friend they were with, who could have either popped to the shop to buy the essential item (sweets) or waited with the kid?
