To be mad that some woman took her infected child to Tesco covered in fresh chicken pox?

Isn't it contagious like that??
I thought they had to be dried out.
What about people with compromised immune systems or very small babies.
She was with a friend buying sweets, not urgent!! Wtf!!
It is contagious like that isn't it?

Chickenpox parties are still a thing.

Because vaccination isn't common in the UK, many parent want their child to catch it early.

Complications are vanishingly rare in healthy people.

Decades ago there were fewer people on immunosuppressant drugs in the community, so the main risk was considered to be to pregnant women with no previous exposure.

kitchenrollinrollinrollin · 04/07/2018 15:36

That is not on at all.

Ollivander84 · 04/07/2018 15:36

I'm immunosuppressed and will be for life and wouldn't be happy

my2bundles · 04/07/2018 15:37

I'm well aware of all the risks. Unfortunately when my son had it had to take him to the docs for an infected spot then into the chemist to pick up his antibiotics. It was completely unavoidable. I also popped into a supermarket fir essential shopping straight after It was the only time I took him out but with no one to watch him there was nothing else I could do, he needed his medication and I needed to feed my kids.

ScaredPAD · 04/07/2018 15:37

My husband works away and I still managed to keep both kids home whole they had chicken pox one after the other.

Online delivery for food and a heck of a lot of CBeebies.

No you really dont nip to sainsburys eith them :( Cant believe the cpuple of posters that would!

In retrospect I wish I'd known about the vaccine.

gymNgin · 04/07/2018 15:38

I took my youngest to Tesco when he had chicken pox. We went to the pharmacy part. I ran out of calamine with acqueous cream and he was really itchy. I did have another tube of it but couldn't find it so had to go out. Husband was at work in central London and I don't have any family nearby. I don't really have any friends either so couldn't ask them.

I literally just took him straight to the pharmacy, bought the cream and we went straight back to the car. He was next to me the whole time and it was quiet so luckily we didn't come in contact with anyone.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 04/07/2018 15:38

It can be a truly horrible illness. DD1 had it terribly and was almost hospitalised. Spots absolutely everywhere, so many that they were all joining up. They were in her mouth, ears, up her nose, in her bum etc.

I wouldn't knowingly want to infect someone!

Clandestino · 04/07/2018 15:38

@Phosphorus - my brother in law got chicken pox as an adult. He was sick like a dog for a few weeks. High fever, rash, whatever he could he got. Took him months to recover fully.
There's no reason for this kind of shit. Yep, you can get them from a child that's not displaying any signs yet but mostly it's simply selfish morons who either ignore that their child is sick or decide to spread the good news.

StaySafe · 04/07/2018 15:41

I miscarried as a result of chicken pox in early pregnancy, she was a total idiot.

0lgaDaPolga · 04/07/2018 15:43

It’s not on at all. I was at a toddler group this morning with my son and a little boy there was absolutely covered in fresh chicken pox spots.
I’m pregnant and my son hasn’t had chicken pox so I tried to keep my distance but this little boy kept coming over to try and play with my son so I kept having to move him away. It’s so rude and inconsiderate of people to bring infected children out like that.

CherryNib · 04/07/2018 15:43

How come we've come this far with this degree of stupidity....

Er… it is wise to expose children to the chicken pox virus when they are children, so they will become immune. It's a minor illness in children but if you catch chicken pox as an adult it can be very serious indeed.

Yogagirl123 · 04/07/2018 15:43

Selfish behaviour, chicken pox can be very dangerous.

rosesandflowers1 · 04/07/2018 15:44

Maybe she didn't want to leave him home alone or something? But still really selfish of her - there could have been very elderly/young people there, or people who have trouble with immune systems that won't have been vaccinated or are especially vulnerable.

And Jesus, Elasticity, WTF?

ThursdayLastWeek · 04/07/2018 15:45

Playing devils advocate - my DCs CP spots were not very obviously chicken pox until a few days into them appearing. And I’ve known people take their children to the docs and the doc not being able to be certain.

I’m sure this person wasn’t deliberately trying to make people ill - it’s easy to be unwittingly thoughtless if you don’t have all the facts.

Clandestino · 04/07/2018 15:46

CherryNib there's nothing but absolutely nothing wise about exposing children to any kind of illness, be it chicken pox, polio or TBC.
You don't know how the child will react. Mine was totally fine within three days, spots drying. My friends' kids were hit hard and ended up in the A&E with fever cramps.
You don't want your children to get sick, you just don't. Yep, it's inevitable they get ill at some stage, chicken pox if you don't get the vaccine but it's nothing that's welcome.
The idea of chicken pox or even measles parties (yep, I've heard of few) is simply criminal.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 04/07/2018 15:50

There’s a poster on here that took her contagious child to a Mumsnet focus group... Last week. That kind of stupidity is irredeemable.

SoupDragon · 04/07/2018 15:52

What about single mothers?

You make it work. I was a single mother when my 3rd child had chicken pox.

KatharinaRosalie · 04/07/2018 15:54

Infecting your child on purpose to gain immunity is like getting pregnant as contraception.
Chicken pox vaccine has been available for quite a while now.

OliviaStabler · 04/07/2018 15:59

I caught chicken pox as an adult. Most people's reactions was 'What do you mean you've never had chicken pox?' Wiped me out for two weeks.

OliviaStabler · 04/07/2018 15:59

People cannot stay in for over 7 days isolated.

Of course they can.

Phosphorus · 04/07/2018 16:00

The chickenpox vaccine is relatively expensive, especially if you have more than one child.

Naturally acquired immunity is thought to be lifelong, whereas it is suspected that immunity via vaccine may diminish with time.

sausagerollsontheside · 04/07/2018 16:01

They were fresh and it was chicken pox they had no scab on them

I think it is really rude.

And dangerous!

So so awful about the lady who miscarried 🦋 why would you increase anyone else risk of suffering an additional illness or pain?

It is bonkers!
She was buying sweets as I said.

Feel really sad about it thinking about how much others have suffered.
ThanksThanks

Chicken pox party - where a parent of a contagious child with CP invites other parents to bring their children round who haven't had CP so they all catch it and get done with CP at the same time e.g. over the long school summer holiday.

I have never heard of such a ludicrous idea. Incredible.

LongOldMile · 04/07/2018 16:06

People cannot stay in for over 7 days isolated. She may have been getting sweets to attend a chicken pox party.

WTAF. This can't be real!

  1. Yes of course you can.
  2. Chicken pox parties are fucking stupid.
