World Cup- is it really all that?

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 04/07/2018 11:20

Just that really.

A group of lads dashing around after a ball, on a patch of grass.

Am I missing something? Why is it so exciting? Is it the actual game, or the fact that it only happens every 4 years? Also, these young men are paid more per week than most hard-working folk (with
proper jobs) earn in a year, so surely they should be winning the odd match anyway?

Why are people so delighted when they actually win? Have I just answered my own question??!

No @MrsSnootyPants2018.

You don't get it. There are things I don't get, but I don't feel the need to pass snide and insulting comments about them.

SoddingUnicorns · 06/07/2018 15:46

Well said ilovesooty

MrsSnootyPants2018 · 06/07/2018 16:14

@ilovesooty it's a kick about. That's all it is on a archer scale in a bigger park.

SoddingUnicorns · 06/07/2018 16:16

@MrsSnootyPants2018 in your opinion, which is fine as long as you don’t live up to your username and get all snooty about it.

I’m sure there are things you enjoy which I don’t understand or enjoy, I wouldn’t be snotty about them though. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

Try it.

derxa · 06/07/2018 16:19

it's a kick about. That's all it is on a archer scale in a bigger park. No it isn't. It's like saying Mo Farah does a run round the park of a Sunday morning or Michael Phelps does a few lengths in the local pool.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/07/2018 16:21

@MrsSnootyPants yes it's a kick about in the same way that the Royal Ballet is just blokes in tights skipping round the stage and a Van Dyck is just blobs of paint on a canvas and Beethoven's music is just some deaf chap plonking away on a piano Hmm

Pinkgeorge · 06/07/2018 16:23

It’s not “coming home” it’s going to France 🤣

ReanimatedSGB · 06/07/2018 17:20

No, it isn't that liking men's football makes you a supporter of the government, it's that the government find this constant banging on about how men's football brings us all together and makes people happy... kind of useful. If the news is all about men chasing balls round a field and how 'wonderful' that is, the government can sneak out dubious laws or bury anything inconvenient - and this goverment, in particular, is a bit more keen than usual to tell people to be 'patriotic' and 'proud of our team.' I mean, I'm sure it's very nice for the men who like chasing balls round fields and are percieved as good at it, but it's nice for those men whether they are British, European or from any other country. It's just a matter of complete indifference to a lot of people which particular men from which particular countries chase more balls round more fields or do it a bit faster than some of the others or whateverthefuck it is that they do that some people find so fascinating. Every country has men (and women) who like to do sports and are good at doing sport, and fair enough but just stop a) boring me with it and b) suggesting that it has anything to do with me or the country I live in.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/07/2018 17:23

It's not the first (or I'm sure the last) time that the Tories have wrapped themselves in the flag. Churchill was a terrible offender. To a certain extent all governments do it.

And yes, I totally agree with you that this government is particularly odious. But I'm not going to stop supporting England to spite them Grin

JacquesHammer · 06/07/2018 18:27

stop a) boring me with it and b) suggesting that it has anything to do with me or the country I live in

So stop posting on threads about it. You’re master of your own destiny here.

I do have to question the motives of someone who spends as much time as you’ve done over the last few days on how much you dislike something and find it tedious 😂😭

SoddingUnicorns · 06/07/2018 18:46

@JacquesHammer yes!

BitOutOfPractice · 06/07/2018 20:50

I do want to post the meme again that was posted up thread.

"Hating something that's popular doesn't make you interesting"

ilovesooty · 06/07/2018 21:17

Perhaps if you want to reduce your conscious awareness of the event you could consider ceasing to post about it.

ReanimatedSGB · 08/07/2018 15:24

So people smashing up ambulances and branches of IKEA is something we should just stop moaning about because men's football is so wonderful at 'bringing the country together' and 'making people happy'?

JacquesHammer · 08/07/2018 15:26

Don’t be even more ridiculous. I haven’t spoken to a single football fan who doesn’t condemn what those idiots did.

What we shouldn’t do - because it would be utterly stupid - is suggest that (a) all football fans are in any way like this (b) that football is the sole cause and (c) that the millions of decent football fans aren’t actually responsible for what a small minority do.

wowfudge · 08/07/2018 15:31

And please don't suggest that all those people enjoying the world cup are Tories.

Justanotherlurker · 08/07/2018 19:16

It's really shows up the naivety of some posters as trying to insinuate being an England fan is somehow relevant to the tories, or that it's just the Tories that will try and jump on a movement to make a political statement when Momentum are tweeting out things like this..

hotcake80 · 08/07/2018 19:21

It is sadly, relevant to the tories. Look at the links between ukip/ EDL and FLA. Some one's chosen to make certain decisions about linking them.
Have any senior extreme right wingers condemned the attacks on IKEA, for example?

SoddingUnicorns · 08/07/2018 19:28

I’m not an England football fan but fucks sake you can’t expect the majority of England football fans to apologise for the actions of dickheads and call them all Tories and right wing! That’s not only ridiculous it’s pretty offensive too!

ilovesooty · 08/07/2018 20:03

Of course some thugs are causing trouble. They're probably unpleasant and anti social when football isn't bring played as well.

Justanotherlurker · 08/07/2018 20:17

If you want to make idiotic statements and insulations then UKIP gained in labour strongholds.

The fact they haven't returned to labour is more on Labour than it is the Tories.

This naivety of painting things as black and white needs some introspection

RollonSeptember2018 · 11/07/2018 10:41

ReanimatedSGB I completely agree with everything you have said.

I dont understand the fascination with watching men (you dont know) kicking a ball about?

I absolutely love playing sport, and playing football, but watching other people play sport, i have always found to be strange. I felt** the same about the Olympics. Such a big fuss over it, all over the television, such publicity. Why? Does it make us pull together as a country? Have more respect for others several months later? It doesn't.

If we win......then what? A trophy sits somewhere that most of us won't see? Why is that such a great thing?

What difference does it make to English people's lives or happiness a week later? Does anyone know??

BitOutOfPractice · 11/07/2018 11:09

Yes but @RollonSeptember2018 the fact that you don't enjoy it doesn't mean you cannot comprehend that some people do enjoy it surely.

I don't like / understand opera for instance. It doesn't mean I don't realise some people do.

That's what this thread has a lot of: I don't like x therefore you shouldn't like it either.

beanaseireann · 15/07/2018 18:53

I'm just watching the presentation.
You'd think with all that money spent hosting the tournament that someone would think that it might lash rain so they'd better have a contingency plan and get umbrellas or a canopy so that President Putin, the French and Croatian presidents wouldn't get drenched.
What's with the air hostesses ?
They were drowned wet too.
Putin got an umbrella but wasn't very gentlemanly and didn't give it to the Croatian lady Sad
Wasn't she lovely.
