World Cup- is it really all that?

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 04/07/2018 11:20

Just that really.

A group of lads dashing around after a ball, on a patch of grass.

Am I missing something? Why is it so exciting? Is it the actual game, or the fact that it only happens every 4 years? Also, these young men are paid more per week than most hard-working folk (with
proper jobs) earn in a year, so surely they should be winning the odd match anyway?

Why are people so delighted when they actually win? Have I just answered my own question??!

Some fans in this country do not have a good name around the world; they’re an absolute embarrassment at times tbh. Nobody can disagree with me on this one, surely?!

Nope, just like some fans from other parts of the world don't have a good name either, it isn't just an english problem that some like to wring their hands over.

And lets not pretend this is just down to football either.

Follyfoot · 04/07/2018 21:27

Domestic violence peaking in relation to football isn't a reason to hate football, it's a reason to hate the perpetrator. Alcohol exacerbates a huge number of domestic violence attacks - those of you being so pious about football and DV, I do hope you also avoid alcohol so stridently.

Itchytights · 04/07/2018 21:29

Aah well, off you pop then.

Close the door on your way out.

SoddingUnicorns · 04/07/2018 21:40

We’re a teetotal house.

ilovesooty · 04/07/2018 21:44

Banal op.

Frankly I really don't care whether or not you get it.

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 04/07/2018 22:16

Thanks for that, ilovesooty!

OP posts:
ProfessorMoody · 04/07/2018 22:20

Teetotal here too.

ProfessorMoody · 04/07/2018 22:20

Maybe football can only be enjoyed if you're pissed?

Grin
SoddingUnicorns · 04/07/2018 22:24

Nah I love football but I can’t handle drink! I hate feeling squiffy so I don’t drink. Never miss a Celtic game though Grin

Lethaldrizzle · 04/07/2018 22:25

So I should give up drinking cos some drunk blokes beat up their partners when their team loses Hmm

user1471453601 · 04/07/2018 22:36

There must be three or four threads now along the same lines. Ok, you dont "get" football. There is no requirement for you to do so. But, please why do you feel the need to tell those of us that do get it, that we shouldn't? It's just a game. It's just entertainment. Let those of us that find it entertaining, get on with being entertained. It's once every four years, for goodness sake.

RebeccaBunchLawyer · 04/07/2018 22:42

Hey, user1471, when did I tell people that they shouldn’t get it? Confused 😐

I find it interesting that people enjoy this game so much, just like me being utterly enthralled watching people on wheels hurl themselves up into the air!

To be honest I can't decide which I'm finding more tedious now, people moaning about the weather (it's summer people!) or the World Cup (watch something else!).

dameofdilemma · 05/07/2018 09:34

I predict interest will wane after Saturday...

ThursdayLastWeek · 05/07/2018 09:35

Ditto BitOutOfPractice

The80sweregreat · 05/07/2018 14:13

I can moan all day about this heat. The WC does drag on , but that’s only every four years. This heat is hanging around forever!

BitOutOfPractice · 05/07/2018 17:20

Yeah and there's stuff and weather and people and all sorts of shit that grind my gears every day. That's not the point. It's the moaning. Partly because moaning isn't going to make the weather break or the WC stop. All it does is bring everyone else (who might be enjoying either or both) down too and makes me avoid certain people like the plague. It's really just so tedious.

beeefcake · 06/07/2018 10:05

Two things I hate are team sports and patriotism so it's a no from me.

www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/5a8677f8-58ea-44c8-a133-23ea2ae90abb

To those of you who keep posting the 38% rise in domestic violence during the World Cup picture.

Keep posting it anyway, it raises awareness.

But just don’t hate football for it, because it almost certainly isn’t true.

Usernumbers1234 · 06/07/2018 12:37

And before the copy pasting of quotes from that article saying it is.

My point is it’s an excuse. Not a cause.

ReanimatedSGB · 06/07/2018 12:55

The continuous insistence that everyone must pay attention to and at least pretend to enjoy a big men's football competition is Not Good. Not just because it is so fucking tiresome to have people going on and on at you about it and, in some cases, calling you 'unpatriotic' (as if that's a bad thing) if you say it isn't your thing thanks - but because all this 'feelgood' bullshit is kind of handy for a malevolent government which is systematically gutting the country. Long queues in A&E? Having to go to the foodbank because your benefits have been stopped? Getting racist abuse yelled at you on a daily basis? Cheer UP you traitor, some English men have kicked some balls about in a field...

Cantspell2 · 06/07/2018 13:06

Domestic violence reports peak by 25% each Christmas so if you apply the same arguement then let’s do away with Christmas.
The simple fact is that if you are in an abusive relationship anything can trigger your abuser.

Cantspell2 · 06/07/2018 13:14

Football in itself is a great benefit to our economy

www.consultancy.uk/news/2946/premier-league-and-clubs-add-34-billion-to-uk-economy

And the figures on that article are out of date so they will have increased.

Just in group stages of the WC added millions in extra tax revenue to the government in beer sales alone.

Just because you don’t like football doesn’t mean it has no benefit to you.

MrsSnootyPants2018 · 06/07/2018 13:38

I don't really get football.

It's just a bunch of men who never grew out of going to the park to kick about with their mates.

BitOutOfPractice · 06/07/2018 13:58

I've heard it all now. Loving football and enjoying the WC now makes me an apologist for the Tory Government Hmm
