Got into a heated debate with someone at work this morning who isn’t from the UK and he was saying how revolting all the food is.

Some of my favourites:

Really good fish & chips
Scones with clotted cream & Jam
Sticky toffee pudding

We also have some of the best seafood

Fish and chips (with a pickled onion and a gherkin Grin)
Roast dinner
Traditional, stodgy British puddings (spotted dick, crumble etc) with custard
Scones with cream and jam
British strawberries

We arent known for our cuisine, though, let's be honest...

Camomila · 04/07/2018 12:35

Roast dinner
Fish and chips
Afternoon tea
Strawberries and cream
My DMs blackberry and pear crumble

My Italian relatives were inpressed by crumpets, curry,...and jacket potatoes!

KittyVonCatsworth · 04/07/2018 12:37

@Snowysky20009 it’s a heartwarming, stick to your ribs Scottish soup made with smoked haddock, tatties, onions and milk and it is divine! You need decent smoked haddock though and nice waxy tatties. I want CS now! X

I live in the supposed land of the best food in the world but I still do a monthly shop and get it sent to me as there are some things they just can't be got here. I buy all my herbs and spices from the Uk as here they are hard to find, proper brown bread, salted butter, cheese, bacon and sausages, Tikka paste, custard, jelly etc.

Favorite foods ate

Roast (especially Christmas dinner)
Tikka madala
Chicken kievs (which I make)
Stews and soups
Shepard and cottage pie
Chicken and ham pie
Steak and kidney pie
Proper breakfadt

Italian food is lovely. But there's only so much pasta one can take

DotForShort · 04/07/2018 12:40

Sausage rolls!
Chicken tikka masala
Cheese (many varieties)

I don’t care for most British dishes, but I could probably live on these three quite happily.

OftenHangry · 04/07/2018 12:41

I adore the funny names you guys have here.
Mince pie filled with mince meat. It took me really long time to dare to taste it and so find out mince meat in there is not an actual meat😂
Spotted dick. Loving that.
The fact that tart is not only a delicious cake thing, but also an insult is awesome too 😂

What is cullen sking and the cromer crab?

LiquoricePickle · 04/07/2018 12:42

LaCerbiatta where are you in the UK? I come from Kent and we have wonderful seafood and obviously it's fresh... It's same day more often than not.

We have excellent strawberries, cherries and rhubarb in Kent. Oh, and Spartan and Cox apples.

Cooking apples too. Other countries don't have cooking apples.

Wonderful cheese across the country.

Blackcurrant jam, marmalade.

Gypsy tart.

AdaColeman · 04/07/2018 12:43

English asparagus and Scottish raspberries are delicious.

AdaColeman · 04/07/2018 12:49

Yorkshire forced rhubarb, Bramley apples are wonderful. English apple varieties like Russets are far superior to the ubiquitous French golden delicious.

SoddingUnicorns · 04/07/2018 12:50

Cullen Skink basic recipe

It’s essentially creamy rich smoked fish soup. But it’s absolutely gorgeous and tastes waaaay better than it looks/sounds.

My grannie’s was really buttery and try as I might I just can’t recreate it Sad even using her recipe!

MoonriseKingdom · 04/07/2018 12:54

Kippers
Fish pie
Kedgeree

MoonriseKingdom · 04/07/2018 12:58

Many lovely ways of eating tart fruits eg rhubarb
Rhubarb fool
Rhubarb and custard
Rhubarb crumble

SoftBlocks · 04/07/2018 13:02

Boiled crab
Proper stew and dumplings
Eton mess
Yes absolutely cauliflower cheese

Loads of British good is amazing if it is cooked properly with decent ingredients.

Eccles cakes!

bakingdemon · 04/07/2018 13:03

CHEESE.
Puddings - Bakewell tart, spotted dick, trifle etc etc etc.
Meat, esp beef and venison.
Biscuits. Nowhere else that I've seen has such a delicious range of biscuits.
Preserves - jams, chutneys.

Scotland in particular exports most of its best seafood (a lot to Paris) which is why we don't see that much of it here.

Where is your colleague from?

Frosty66612 · 04/07/2018 13:04

@oftenhangry Cromer crab is from Cromer in Norfolk (a little seaside town) and it’s definitely the best I’ve had in the UK

OP posts:
Frosty66612 · 04/07/2018 13:06

@bakingdemon colleague is from Poland. He thinks British food is the most bland he’s ever tried. He clearly hasn’t eaten anything decent over here to make such a sweeping statement

SaucyJack · 04/07/2018 13:06

Marmite on toast, with a nice cup of builder's tea.

Doesn't get any better than that.

bakingdemon · 04/07/2018 13:08

@Frosty66612 bit rich given Polish food is not exactly famous for being one of the world's most interesting cuisines either!

Frosty66612 · 04/07/2018 13:08

@saucyjack I HATE marmite. My sister and mum absolutely love it though. It’s funny how it’s such a love/hate flavour

OP posts:
bakingdemon · 04/07/2018 13:09

@SaucyJack don't, I'm super hungry at the moment as I'm coming to the end of my first trimester and haven't had time to get lunch yet!

vampirethriller · 04/07/2018 13:10

OftenHangry mincemeat used to have real meat in it many years ago!

Loyaultemelie · 04/07/2018 13:14

Wensleydale with cranberries. Lincolnshire poacher, preferably on soda bread (with mushrooms but don't think I can claim them as British).
Rhubarb crumble and (super thick) custard.
Cauliflower cheese or cauliflower mash.
Cheesy leeks.
