Got into a heated debate with someone at work this morning who isn’t from the UK and he was saying how revolting all the food is.

Some of my favourites:

Really good fish & chips
Scones with clotted cream & Jam
Sticky toffee pudding

We also have some of the best seafood

LaCerbiatta, battered fish done properly is seasoned.

Every country's national favourites have the potential to be done badly.

And yep. We have amazing seafood. We're surrounded by water. The amount of it we export is a travesty but it's still available here.

Frosty66612 · 04/07/2018 12:13

Bad fish and chips are awful and bland.
I had some last week in Dorset. The fish had been caught 3 hours before and the batter was perfectly crisp and seasoned well. So delicious! Wild Scottish salmon is really tasty too

When I'm abroad (particularly in America) I miss:

Decent cheese
proper sausages with extra ingredients such as apple etc.
Roast meat
Yorkshire puddings
Puddings that are not over sweet such as gooseberry fool
Back bacon
baked beans
quality offal - kidneys, liver, faggots, black pudding

Fruit squash although at least their beer is improving

In fairness they mostly have decent fish although depends on location.

I think venison is one of the finest meats we produce - and rabbit stew!

SoddingUnicorns · 04/07/2018 12:18

Arbroath smokies, haggis, cranachan, Stornaway black pud, a good fish supper, smoked salmon.

Deshasafraisy · 04/07/2018 12:19

Soddingunicorns- and a good Cullen skink

SoddingUnicorns · 04/07/2018 12:20

Oh I forgot about Cullen Skink! My grannie’s Cullen skink was out of this world!

AnnDerry · 04/07/2018 12:20

Staffordshire oatcakes (grilled with cheese)

SoddingUnicorns · 04/07/2018 12:22

Lancashire crumbly cheese!

Oldagepensioner · 04/07/2018 12:23

English food is actually very very good indeed, if it’s cooked properly.

Haddock, chips and mushy peas!

A proper roast dinner, preferably cooked by me.

spanishwife · 04/07/2018 12:23

A posh roast dinner in a fancy pub!

Agree on the seafood - such a shame most of it gets exported!!

You can't deny bakery/pastry/cakes either, Spanish cakes and pastries are mostly awful in comparison.

spanishwife · 04/07/2018 12:24

Meat in general is excellent in the UK. Perfect for roasting, tons of juice, tender meat, right proportion of fat. Totally underrated!

In Spain you can't really roast meat in the same way as it's so much leaner.

Fontella · 04/07/2018 12:25

Even though I'm a veggie you can't beat a roast - all the veggies and if I do say so myself I make the best veggie gravy. Even my kids prefer it to meat gravy.

But my absolute favourite is bubble and squeak. All the left over veg, fried with a diced onion - put into an oven dish with grated strong cheddar over the top and baked or grilled until the cheese melts.

Where I think we Brits really excel though is our puddings. Bakewell Tart, Lemon Meringue, Summer Pudding, Apple or Rhubarb crumble, Sticky Toffee and/or Date Pudding - with home made custard .....

drool!

@fontella I live near Bakewell and I love getting a Bakewell tart from one of the bakery’s as a treat. So yummy!

Churrolicious · 04/07/2018 12:27

Yorkshire pudding.

Bakewell pudding (not Bakewell tart).

Cheeeese. All the cheese.

Xiaoxiong · 04/07/2018 12:28

I love some of the really nice fruit and veg when it's in season. English asparagus with butter. Lettuce, peas and broad beans gently braised. A really nice chicken, bacon and leek pie. Spring greens sautéed with wild garlic. Savoy cabbage with a bit of bacon or black pudding to season and caraway seeds. A spring salad with asparagus and curls of chalky Wensleydale.

The fruit is also gorgeous - there is nothing to beat the berries, stone fruit, apples in season. A baked stuffed bramley with fluffy white apple, raisins, mixed spices and oats and lashings of custard is food of the gods. Crumbles, tarts, fools, summer pudding, all excellent.

Snowysky20009 · 04/07/2018 12:29

AnnDerry OMG oakcakes. I was introduced to them when I used to spend a week working in Stoke each month. No one back home (wales) have any idea what I'm talking about. I really miss them!!

Stringofpearls · 04/07/2018 12:30

Blackberry and apple crumble with custard
Good quality sausages and mash
Steak pie with gravy
Roast dinner, especially lamb or beef with roast parsnips
Full English
Ham, egg and chips
Apple pie
Strawberries and cream
Cottage pie
Cream tea
Gypsy tart
Yorkshire puddings
Hunters chicken
Ploughmans
Fish pie
Beef stew with dumplings
Trifle
High tea
Toasted tea cakes
Eton mess
Sticky toffee pudding
Jelly and ice cream

These are just some of the more traditional dishes, however it's changed a lot over time.

Stringofpearls · 04/07/2018 12:30

Sorry, didn't realize the list was getting so long!

Snowysky20009 · 04/07/2018 12:30

What's Cullen skink??

Snowysky20009 · 04/07/2018 12:32

I'm about to do the food shop- this list really isn't helping my 'healthy food shop' plan 🤦‍♀️

NameChanger22 · 04/07/2018 12:32

Chip shop chips and mushy peas.
Quiche and jacket potato. (Not sure if it is British?).
Eton mess.

I'm so hungry now.

Deshasafraisy · 04/07/2018 12:32

Seafood gets exported because there is no demand for it here, let’s start demanding! Ask your fishmonger to get it in, the more people ask for it the better.

Nakedavenger74 · 04/07/2018 12:33

Yorkshire puddings
Fishfingers
Salad cream
Wensleydale
Scotch eggs
Pork pies
Cauli cheese
Roast potatoes
Marmite
Twiglits
