Yes, I do understand that people are excited about the football, but it’s Tuesday night and my DC, who is completely exhausted, has to get up early for school - the rather scary shouting has just woken her up. Yep, I know someone will say I should move to the middle of nowhere. I would love to - as many people would - but sadly that’s not possible.

my local premiership football club have a fair bit to do with disabled children, they come in to ds2 special school and do foot ball skills with them , they also invite the children to train with them at the stadium .

What I'm amazed about on this thread is so many people must be perfect neighbours. Never once had a party, never once had a baby cry during the night, never once had to do emergency vaccuning at midnight because they accidentally spilt their midnight snack (damn you cocopops!!) And didn't want their dogs swooping in to scoff it, never owned a windchime, never cut the grass on an evening or morning...So basically there are some who power down at 7pm and don't do anything until 7am??

How can you be so annoyed about some very occasional noise? I don't think your kids education is going to suffer because of a few loud noises on a Tuesday night once every 4 years.

RedBallpointPens · 04/07/2018 12:27

don't do anything until 7am

7am is way to early at the weekends for those of us without kids! Everyone should be quiet 7pm til 10am at the weekend. Or actually permanently quiet as some people work nights and need to sleep during the day.

fenneltea · 04/07/2018 12:30

I just think it's nice to see the country having a good time for a change, I'm sick to death of hearing about brexit, austerity, doo, m and gloom ad infinitum. I'mm not a fan of football, but I'm enjoying this world cup and the camaraderie surrounding it, if you can't beat them join them!

As for the noise, the neighbouring children are often shrieking and screaming well past 10pm, and as they are home educated there is no respite during the day either! Not to mention the dogs shut in the garden and barking all day and night, so I feel no guilt about any noise for something that only happens once every four years (not that we made any noise anyway!)

x2boys · 04/07/2018 12:32

well quite Sharron, i heard my neighbours cheering for about 1 minute maybe 2 last night, but its very warm and the windows are open plus the dog was puttering around inn the garden so the back door was open, both boys were asleep but neither was disturbed

Poxyloxy · 04/07/2018 12:38

I’m not a football fan at all, and have young kids. But this is a one off - England won and people got excited. Yes, annoying that it woke your kids up but i think you’ll being a little unreasonable to expect silence.

They probably wont win another game anyway, so doubt you’ll have to deal with the noise again!

Bit late, but at the risk of completely outing myself, a relative of mine spent some time in a coma following an accident as a teenager that resulted in a life-threatening brain injury and stopped him from being able to play football. He had previously been playing for the youth team of a premier league club, and after the accident found himself having to have intensive physio just to be able to walk again. He's now 21 and in the meantime has started his own charity promoting disability sport, received a prestigious award from the FA for his volunteer work, got a football-related job at the BBC and joined the disabled team of another major club.

Those of you making sweeping generalisations about the large part of the public who happen to enjoy a sport, especially the ones congratulating yourselves on being so open minded because you voted Remain (whatever the fuck that has to do with any of this) and aren't like those nasty shouty working class 'gammon', need to get out of your little back yard bubble and start seeing the real people involved in things like this. Making ignorant statements about something of which you clearly know nothing, based solely on yout own prejudice, just makes you look ridiculous to anyone who has a clue what they're talking about. This match really has brought out the worst in some people, and it's not only the ones you're thinking of.

TheGoddessFrigg · 04/07/2018 12:58

I work in DV and surprisingly this year hasn't been at all bad. The biggest issue for us is always Christmas and New Year - and I would quite happily ban those.

Anyway, I was once in Italy for the World Cup. Whey they won, cars would go round the town ALL NIGHT- blaring their horns. It was hilarious.

IrmaFayLear · 04/07/2018 13:30

Some people on here... what miserable, sad, bitter individuals.

What about the celebrations of other nations? Is that unapproved too, or is it characterful because it's Uruguay or whoever?

I am a complete lump. Always picked last for PE/Games. But do I seek to spoil others' enjoyment of sport? Why would I do that? And as for armchair sport - well, watch something a bit and you can't help but get involved or even obsessed.

Complaining about noise: reminds me of our lovely neighbours who threatened to call the police when ds had a party. I can just imagine what the police would have thought when the arrived to find 12 8-year-olds dressed in Star Wars costumes...

Usernumbers1234 · 04/07/2018 13:35

@thegoddessfrigg

Am I stating the obvious then given Christmas / new year.

Alcohol?

Neverender · 04/07/2018 13:35

Whatever the sporting event it's entirely unnecessary to bowl down the road, smashed off your face, screaming your head off. YANBU. At. All.

Seasawride · 04/07/2018 13:37

prof

Seriously your school sounds appaling.

Most schools now offer a range of inclusive sports for all pupils and cater for lots of other interests like Pilates etc. Offer drama and music, food tech etc. Everyone is good at something and it’s a good school that teaches that and brings it out.

You picked the wrong school for your child.

Seasawride · 04/07/2018 13:38

Neverender

I do apologise for my behaviour! Wink

but come Saturday why not go camping in Scotland. Perhaps that will cheer you up.

HairDyedPink · 04/07/2018 13:39

How dare people be bothered by antisocial behaviour, drunk and loud over-excitement. Bloody selfish attitude. Who are they to spoil the fun of screaming in the streets at night.

Seasawride · 04/07/2018 13:40

psychomath

Wonderful post.

Seasawride · 04/07/2018 13:42

Oh do bore off dear

ReanimatedSGB · 04/07/2018 13:42

No leisure activities have inherent value; nor does religion. Some people enjoy some of them; some weaponise their enjoyment of such things.

Men's football is one of the most toxic ones, TBH. The most noise, fuss and violence. The greatest amount of pressure on people to 'join in' (always toxic). Probably the hobby with the highest levels of contempt for and abuse of women, and the most tribal/sectarian bullshit.

Yes of course some people enjoy it and do no more harm than being a bit noisy or a bit boring about it. Good luck to them. Whatever. But stop telling the rest of us that there's anything inherently positive or important about groups of men running about in a field, chasing a ball.

ShatnersWig · 04/07/2018 13:47

@Seasawride Don't be silly. Midges Grin

Jorah · 04/07/2018 13:47

psychomath hear hear. Bloody brilliant post and well done to your relative.

JacquesHammer · 04/07/2018 13:52

But stop telling the rest of us that there's anything inherently positive or important about groups of men running about in a field, chasing a ball

So you’re seeing people explain positives and you’re arrogant enough to think you know better?

Golly you must find that sort of superiority utterly exhausting

JacquesHammer · 04/07/2018 13:54

A local rugby club to me for example runs mental health sessions as part of a wider campaign towards removing the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. They have a session once a week where blokes who need a chat, or some company go and have a bit of a training session.

The local professional football club runs “loneliness sessions”. They use club buses to go and collect people who need some company. They go and watch the match and have some company.

Just two examples. No positive though right?

ReadingRiot · 04/07/2018 13:54

Football only has all those "mosts" becuase it also attracts far and away the most interest. Anything that involves millions of people (24m watched last night) is going to have some idiots among them

Plimmy · 04/07/2018 13:57

This thread is a fantastic example of why people scoff at MN. Middle-class North London let loose on the internet.

England’s results are a national interest and a reason for many to celebrate while it lasts.

Grow the fuck up.

ProfessorMoody · 04/07/2018 13:58

@Seasawride Believe it or not, it was one of the best options of an English Medium school in rural West Wales. I teach in the same county so have an awareness of all of the English medium schools and they're pretty much all the same in that way. It isn't great.

IrmaFayLear · 04/07/2018 13:59

Can I chip in to hire a (very) small field far away for the "Oh, it's tribalism/violent/opiate of the masses" brigade to go and be grumpy in on Saturday?

Do you grumps not even play Scrabble? Or anything competitive at all? Or are you the types who support the participating in modules ethos of some school sports days?
