To wish the people screaming outside would shut up?

Yes, I do understand that people are excited about the football, but it’s Tuesday night and my DC, who is completely exhausted, has to get up early for school - the rather scary shouting has just woken her up. Yep, I know someone will say I should move to the middle of nowhere. I would love to - as many people would - but sadly that’s not possible.

We had a great time. We shouted, and got excited. Along with the rest of the street.

We didn't beat anyone up, get drunk or shout xenophobic slurs at anyone.

It IS possible to enjoy the football and not be a hooligan. In fact I'm willing to bet most fans are pretty much the same.

LadyLance · 03/07/2018 23:44

Their next game is going to be an afternoon game on Saturday, so hopefully less disturbance for some people. I guess the penalty shoot out also makes people louder.

I'm often woken up early and disturbed by neighbour's children or people doing work outside (hammering started at 7am today) but I accept that as part of living near other people- and late evening shouting when a major sports event is on is part of that too.

I agree that some football fans are awful and give football fans a bad name, and England fans seem to swing between wildly optimistic and wildly pessimistic. But, England have never won a penalty shoot out at a world cup before- It's literally a one off.

I'm not a major football fan, but I genuinely enjoy the world cup and this England team mostly seem like a good bunch of lads.

Also, FWIW, the worst, most dangerous behaviour I've ever experienced as a sports fan was watching rugby in Wales- I was pushed into the row in front in the millennium stadium, ended up covered in bruises and it was terrifying!

If you say so.

JacquesHammer · 03/07/2018 23:45

If you say so

Don’t be silly.

mumfest · 03/07/2018 23:46

Just also want to say, anyone who has had a football mad DS will know, just how incredibly hard it is to get into that higher echelons of football which would make you eligible for the England team.

Hours of training but also an amazing bit of something special that marks you out above all of those thousands of boys playing footie on a Saturday or Sunday.

The current England team is also a reflection of the multicultural nation that we are. They are stars who have worked hard and delivered the goods under a lot of pressure. I wish them all well. They have brought a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.

PickAChew · 03/07/2018 23:47

Tumbleweed here, on our usually busy road.

Chose new house well :)

Who knows, you might be hit by a car driven by a sleep deprived driver...

Your kid can drive? Impressive!

For the rest of us.... hardly sleep deprived at 10pm. I think my husband will be safe to drive tomorrow

CatchIt · 03/07/2018 23:48

Living in the middle of nowhere doesn't stop twats screaming about the football sadly. 😡

I do indeed. I'm living proof. Sunshine and roses and made some great friends through it, from other places.

northernruth · 03/07/2018 23:49

@nonotheresnolyrics domestic violence increases when England play, even more so if they lose. Women are the punch bags outlets for men's stress levels.

PickAChew · 03/07/2018 23:49

Ladylance: intense DIY here and 7am is far too early for hammering. Your neighbours are dicks.

yorkshireyummymummy · 03/07/2018 23:50

To whoever said “sport does not unite the country ffs

WRONG
Yes it bloody does! Do you not remember the summer of 2012? London olympics???
The whole country had a wonderful positive feeling- people were happier and nicer, there was great all inclusive boost every time we won another medal . We have never won so many medals. I doubt I will experience anything like that again.
Football does unite people. If you choose not to be a part of the tide of euphoria that will sweepthrough the country when we win the next match then that’s your loss, not ours.

Footballs coming home!!

Dontblameitontheboogie · 03/07/2018 23:51

"Football's coming home" - yes, very soon the whole team will be on a plane back home.

psychomath · 03/07/2018 23:53

JacquesHammer a lot of it is class snobbery IMO - football is popular with working class people so all fans are obviously drunken racist hooligans who swear and throw bottles. Of course some of them are, but it's a tiny minority. I don't think you get the same reaction with other sports - a lot of people aren't into tennis, but you don't get loads of people sniffing about how 'it's two people batting a ball around, what's the big deal?' It's similar to people who boast about how they're crap with technology because they think it makes them seem more artistic and creative or something.

I'm not normally a football fan but I love the world cup. I was in Iceland last week and everyone was so excited about it, no matter where they were from - even the Americans and Canadians were getting into it Smile It's not going to solve all of society's problems and nor is it meant to, but it's a nice, fun thing that happens once every four years. Some people just have nothing better to do than piss and moan about everything!

psychomath · 03/07/2018 23:54

Dontblameit shhhh, let us have our few delusional nights Grin

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 03/07/2018 23:54

YABSoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooU

Feels a tiny, tiny bit like 1996 with the sunshine and the football except, WE WON THE SHOOT OUT!!!

It was 9.45 or something, seriously people. Children survive lawnmowers and all sorts of shit.

ilovesooty · 03/07/2018 23:56

@UserX - don't be ridiculous.

A friend of mine came to my house to watch the match. He drove here but doesn't drink anyway.
We both enjoyed the match. I don't imagine for a moment he's gone home and beaten his wife up.

ButterChickenwithyellowrice · 04/07/2018 00:03

Never had to put up with anyone pissing in my front garden when Andy Murray won Wimbledon

You were lucky. Tour de France I had urination, defection and vomiting.

Do you need some help love? You sound miserable

psychomath well put.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/07/2018 00:03

DH was Hmm at me for shouting during the shootout and possibly waking the DC and all the surrounding neighbours

Seasawride · 04/07/2018 00:05

Butter

That bloody Paula Radcliffe again aye!

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/07/2018 00:05

I told him he was lucky that ROI didn't qualify or he'd have had me hollering twice as much Grin

LonginesPrime · 04/07/2018 00:07

Seasawride · 04/07/2018 00:10

With the World Cup of course Grin

IwankaTramp · 04/07/2018 00:10

YANBU.

Uncouth and OTT reactions are cringe-inducing especially over the trivial nonsense that is football.

I hate hearing all those brash, screeched responses and witnessing the simian behaviour that is deemed necessary in order to display engagement.

I would never have a relationship with a fan of football. I have found it a most excellent filter.
