The above is a quote from The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, said by Lord Elrond. At this stage, with POTUS practically pissing off every ally the US has while cosying up with several dictators, it seems quite apt.

So that explains why Giuliani has been stalling about an interview. I wonder how hard it was to get Kennedy to retire and interesting that the information on his son's involvement with Jnr and Kushner came out after his resignation. SCROTUS is running out of options. Oh god, please let Mueller have got this.

I've been watching The Fourth Estate and find it interesting and depressing that in episodes 1&2 things that were a huge shock at the time, now seem to belong to a more innocent age. Charlottesville was the turning point, I think. It revealed so much.

I was shocked by Maggie Haberman texting and calling while driving. Eek! Shock

Isn't indicted the precursor to prosecution, Perking?

'Remember the undocumented pregnant minor who was denied access to an abortion? Brett Kavanaugh was in the minority of judges who voted against giving her access to an abortion. He will vote to overturn Roe v. Wade.'

That's what Kav. supporters will have plugged to T. to get the nom. Claws . They know self interest rules in trumpworld. I find that interpretation of what constrains, or in his view does not constrain, sitting POTUS bizarre. What if a POTUS physically injured or murdered someone? No investigation? That's patently ridiculous.

ohmymimi · 10/07/2018 08:02

I understand Kav.'s argument is political, in that he believes Congress should pass a law to protect a POTUS (Maddow clarified that).

'Brett Kavanaugh unlike most judges on his court, concluded that banning assault weapons was unconstitutional. Look for him to strike down regulation of firearms if he is confirmed.'

ohmymimi · 10/07/2018 08:11

'Red flags' - it should be disqualifying for a normal Congress:
@CoryBooker
The fact that Kavanaugh believes that a President should not be subject to civil litigation or criminal investigation while in office means that Trump just nominated a justice who has already reached conclusions on these serious questions. That should raise enormous red flags.

It happens in real Dictatorland so Trump doesn't see why he shouldnt be treated the same as, say, Putin who can kill his opponents and press with impunity, it seems.

It shows how far we have come in less than 2 years.

PerkingFaintly · 10/07/2018 08:32

Mine too, Gumpendorf.Grin

ohmymimi · 10/07/2018 08:32

Well, if Congress and the other SCOTUS Justices could be persuaded by the Kav. doctrine that T. is effectively above the law while in office, Claws , that would be dangerously close to enabling dictatorship.

'These people who go against Trump, are going against God's plan for America'

A total nutjob and this is what you get when you mix religion and politics together. We might be in a brexit mess in the UK at the moment but at least religion doesn't come into our political system.

Don't think this has been posted before. It's an interesting insight into Pompeo's NoKo visit.

This is so true, Roussette. The toxicity of religion in US politics is frightening. The first time it hit me was during Bush43 first election campaign when I saw pastors telling congregation it was ungodly to vote Dem. And there were people interviewed who claimed Dems. were doing the bidding of Satan (I've expressed that more elegantly than they did Grin ). I found it chilling then, but it is truly horrifying how totally invasive this poison is now.

Surprising? No.

Former Putin adviser has secret investment in US energy firm praised by Trump,
"American Ethane, a Houston-based firm that recently signed a multibillion dollar export deal with China."

Donald J. Trump
Thinks he's a great big shark snapping at NATO allies, but he's really a just rotting jelly fish, stinking in the harsh glare of reality, stranded on an endless beach of scorn.
@realDonaldTrump
Getting ready to leave for Europe. First meeting - NATO. The U.S. is spending many times more than any other country in order to protect them. Not fair to the U.S. taxpayer. On top of that we lose $151 Billion on Trade with the European Union. Charge us big Tariffs (& Barriers)!

Guess who didn't write this tweet:

@realDonaldTrump
On behalf of the United States, congratulations to the Thai Navy SEALs and all on the successful rescue of the 12 boys and their coach from the treacherous cave in Thailand. Such a beautiful moment - all freed, great job!

At least he didn't wait 48 h. Hmm

Roussette · 10/07/2018 13:57

ohmymini and I remember Blair telling the nation that God made him invade Iraq;.

That didn't go down well. How convenient to blame God.

Trump says that between NATO, Theresa May, and Putin that his meeting with Putin "may be the easiest of them all."

ohmymimi · 10/07/2018 14:41

That's a 'yes' then, lion. He couldn't be more unconvincing; Shah is lousy at these attempts at obfuscation.

ohmymimi · 10/07/2018 14:51

He is definitely not a clean pair of hands, as evidenced by his SCOTUS nom. acceptance speech. What he says is not how he has performed:

'My judicial philosophy is straightforward. A judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law. A judge must interpret statutes as written. And a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history and tradition and precedent.'

'I will tell each senator that I revere the Constitution. I believe that an independent judiciary is the crown jewel of our constitutional republic. If confirmed by the Senate, I will keep an open mind in every case, and I will always strive to preserve the Constitution of the United States and the American Rule of Law.'

@AaronBlake
Kavanaugh made extremely odd claim: "No president has ever consulted more widely, or talked with more people from more backgrounds, to seek input about a [SCOTUS] nomination."

There've been ~160 previous nominees -- and selection process isn't generally matter of public record.'
