The above is a quote from The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring, said by Lord Elrond. At this stage, with POTUS practically pissing off every ally the US has while cosying up with several dictators, it seems quite apt.

My head is almost permanently in my hands at the moment over this administration, but thanks for the new thread. I'll steel myself!

Envy Eeww! It gets worse.

Mind you, that's exactly where Sessions, Nunes and a large number of GOP congresspeople have indeed inserted themselves...

On Trump's policies...
“This is a genuine effort to smash, to take a wrecking ball to the whole international system of trade agreements and to start all over again,” said Rufus Yerxa, a former U.S. trade official who now leads the National Foreign Trade Council. “And I think that’s something that is causing a serious re-examination by business, and you’re seeing industry after industry coming out and saying, ‘We don’t think that’s the way to do this, and it will have very bad effects for us.’”

TheClaws · 03/07/2018 12:27

Again, either not listening/reading his own @intelligence reports to the contrary, or simply lying.

Many good conversations with North Korea-it is going well! In the meantime, no Rocket Launches or Nuclear Testing in 8 months. All of Asia is thrilled. Only the Opposition Party, which includes the Fake News, is complaining. If not for me, we would now be at War with North Korea!

He can't cope with anyone disagreeing with him, and even when facts are presented across the media, some by the intelligence forces, he will call it Fake news and blame the Dems.

I blame the GOP. Trump is just a tool. But they're complicit with their silence. All of them. To be honest, they are more answerable than Trump, he's just pig ignorant, they're not but they continue with this carnage. It needs some rats to desert the sinking ship.

TheClaws · 03/07/2018 12:42

Remember, Fox News itself finally ran the story that NK isn’t denuclearising. Does that make Fox fake news?

Still following but don't post often. Thank you for the new thread and the Lord of the Rings references! That quote about 'all that we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us' keeps on occuring to me these days. I think it helps if you start to feel powerless; we don't control what happens but we can control how we respond. And we can remember where the lines are between right and wrong, even if people are trying to argue that all kinds of unacceptable things are actually acceptable. Thanks for persisting!

An interesting read here.

quillette.com/2018/07/02/political-moderates-are-lying/

'Do most people legitimately disagree with one another? Or are they merely conforming to supposedly dominant ideas? Though there are legitimate disagreements, we contend that modern American political tribalism has been artificially inflated by group-based conformity. That is, the moderate majority’s submission to the demands of dedicated partisans has created a mirage of polarization.'

Thanks. That's pretty much correct. It's interesting that workers in different sectors have started claiming back what they've lost through austerity years. We're seeing a rise in strikes, which didn't happen so much during austerity.
The government has been forced to say there's not enough money for everyone. But they're still bailing out failing banks. Hmm
My own experience is that despite claims by the government, I haven't recovered salary levels from before austerity. Never mind salary increases.

But, somehow, we seem to have been able to stay clear from far right pressure. So far. We're keeping away from the Italian proposal of a far-right European group. And our FBI/Scotland Yard equivalent head is very keen to stamp down on extremist right-wing groups.

But we are a country more of emigration that immigration.

In fact, just found this: www.nature.com/articles/s41599-017-0062-8

In the meantime, no Rocket Launches or Nuclear Testing in 8 months.

But Rocket Man himself said earlier in the year that he didn't need to conduct any more tests.

AcrossthePond55 · 03/07/2018 14:58

Thanks for the new and aptly titled thread!

We're rapidly heading for a totalitarian state, I think. We've got 'disarming' the press, isolating us from right-thinking countries, buddying up to totalitarian regimes, closing off borders, making a specific 'enemy' for the ignorant to focus on, and giving those ignorant the belief that they have the right to attack not only that 'enemy', but to attack anyone who doesn't think as they do. And shortly our civil liberties will start to be legally curtailed. Roe v Wade and Marriage Equality will be the bellwether. I will make the first Godwin's law reference on this thread; this is straight out of Hitler's playbook.

What I DON'T think is that we'll end up with Scrotus as our 'Dear Leader'. I think there are any number of Senators/Congresspersons/Vice Presidents waiting in the wings, content to let him do the dirty work, who will then step in and 'save the country from a dictator' only to become the dictator instead.

DH and I have stashed away enough cash to enable us to easily get our family to the Canadian border with our caravan. We realize that it's only paranoia we hope, but it does make us feel better. Now we just have to hope that Canada doesn't close its border!

We haven't given up the fight, though, and I know others haven't either. We "walk on with hope in our hearts, and we never walk alone".

Hello Across. You went worrying quiet after announcing that you were off to check out the FART Act. Smile

After some Trumpy news outlet tried to suggest the resisters were planning to start a war on July 4th #SecondCivilWarLetters is providing some much needed twitter entertainment.

'My children,
I write from the front lines of the looming Battle of the Red Hen. We are heartened by the kindness of Red Henners, but live in trepidation of the return of Colonel Sanders, as her use of whining & gaslightin’ puts the fear in many a soldier.'

'Dearest Martha,
It has been a brutal fortnight, starting with the Battle of Covfefe and ending with the Bowling Green Massacre, nevertheless we persisted...and now our troops are poised to storm the shores of Mar-a-Lago. Godspeed.'

This is also rather heartening--to think about the people who serve without fanfare and who will always hold the line (okay, all the battle metaphors have got to me).
