I actually think he went for the ball. That said it was a penalty either way and should have been a red.

I think he went for the ball too, but a foul's a foul and they've benefitted hugely.
This new law doesn't account for that. Apparently as long as he goes for the ball he's in the clear? so if you just happen to wipe out a player in the process, you're ok!
