Personally, I appear to have lost all power of speech ...

@MrsKCastle.... With you on all your points.

Whatever happened to bringing young people up with a sense of responsible choice....?! Surely this is the answer to encompass all identities, religions, feelings, etc etc... Angry am angry because we're removing a choice.

Off to growl in a corner!!

Urbanbeetler · 01/07/2018 08:59

it reinforces the message that the correct way is the male way which will not do much good for building girls confidence in their own abilities

The ability to wear a skirt???

worridmum · 01/07/2018 08:59

I dont get the fuss boys and men ate forced to only wear trousers = fine when girls get told that they have to wear trouser = not fine.

Its worse in the work place men must wear shirts and ties or full suits even in this heat wear as women can wear nice and summer (aka light) summer dresses so much that they are cold if air con in on.

There was a massive stink when in my office everyone had to wear suits (aka they decided rather then let the men dress down a bit they forced equailty by making women wear suits.)

Urbanbeetler · 01/07/2018 08:59

Trousers aren’t a male way.

foxssoxareinthebox · 01/07/2018 09:00

I personally used to hate wearing school trousers in the summer. They made me feel hot and uncomfortable. They are often made of polyester type material which isn’t breathable. I used to like dressing as a girl as many girls do. Some don’t and that is entirely their choice. What an absolute travesty that my daughter has to hide her femininity to appease the politically correct apologists.

Urbanbeetler · 01/07/2018 09:00

This.

MIdgebabe · 01/07/2018 09:01

You could be gender neutral by allowing anyone to wear a skirt. As far as I could read it was about banning skirts and super tight trousers in a high school, which might be less about gender and more about sexuality. one school round here introduced a ban after giving the girls a year to stop dressing inappropriately- things too short, too tight, too revealing

Whilst it might be nice if people can wear what they like without it being interpreted sexually, I think that's a rather naive position. Especially in a teenage environment. We all know there is an expected difference between dressing at home, in an office, in public and on the pull. Threads on mothers wearing pyjamas on the school run. Yes those society rules are not fixed and should always be questioned, but i certainly would want to discourage huge differences between boys and girls in their displays of sexuality at school. And most teenage girls seem to equate looking nice with looking sexually attractive.

sunsandandwaterslides · 01/07/2018 09:01

Just to play devils advocate - it isn't going gender neutral though is it? It is replacing a typical female piece of clothing with a piece of clothing most associated with being male. Therefore you could see this as men winning out again and women being forced to dress like them. They should have the freedoms to choose. I work in a male dominated industry and our uniform is very masculine. Think shirt and tie everyday. I wear my work skirt as often as possible because I like skirts and I am female. I don't always want to dress like a freaking man.

OohMavis · 01/07/2018 09:01

And as usual, choices are taken away from females so we can default to the male perspective, so we don't risk hurting their feelings.

So sick of this shit.

ADastardlyThing · 01/07/2018 09:01

The schools are actually obviously uncomfortable with males wearing skirts.

So they get to look all woke n shit, and stop it at the same time.

kalapattar · 01/07/2018 09:02

Maybe boys should be told they have to wear skirts?

Urbanbeetler · 01/07/2018 09:02

Ha- that would be interesting.

NeeChee · 01/07/2018 09:03

I've just googled, and you can still purchase culottes and even gingham school playsuits! Although the latter won't be very practical for toilet trips for the youngest kids. I loved the summer school dresses when I was little, but maybe that just because I like gingham and cute patterns lol.

exLtEveDallas · 01/07/2018 09:03

Fucks sake. The 'Gender Neutral' option would be Trousers, Skirts or Shorts for all - not 'only trousers for everyone'

I don't wear skirts, ever, but still think people that want to wear them should be able to.

DD has 3 pairs of school trousers in her wardrobe and 5 skirts. The trousers have been sitting there since Aug 16 and worn once. I doubt they fit her now. She chooses not to, but thinks anyone who wants to wear them should be able to.

Load of fucking pandering bollocks.

foxssoxareinthebox · 01/07/2018 09:05

Make the boys wear skirts. Oh but it would never be that way round would it!

claraschu · 01/07/2018 09:05

If schools completely stopped having uniforms or even mentioning clothes for 10 years or so: that is, NO restricting, banning, discussing, or noticing what anyone was wearing, I think everyone would be happier and better educated at the end of the decade.

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 01/07/2018 09:05

What an absolute travesty that my daughter has to hide her femininity to appease the politically correct apologists.

I've never seen so much hysteria over such a tiny issue. Your daughter doesn't have to hide anything. She has to wear a school uniform. A uniform isn't a medium for expressing her femininity or anything else. It's a uniform.

kalapattar · 01/07/2018 09:05

It's a bit disingenious if their real motive is because of issues with girls wearing short skirts but instead of saying that, they've painted it as to do with 'gender neutral' and 'transgender pupils'.

Hygge · 01/07/2018 09:06

Why can they not just have skirts, dresses, trousers and shorts as an option for any student?

They could easily say "These items are school uniform and any student can choose to wear any aspect of it" and just have done with it.

The school nearest us insists on blazers in hot weather and won't allow shorts.

Yet in winter they also insist on blazers and won't allow coats or boots.

Angelil · 01/07/2018 09:07

Long skirts would do the job fine and be cool in summer.
I do understand the school's point of view in the sense of a) if I can see up, down or through it, you shouldn't be wearing it to school and b) if they are having issues controlling skirt length then I can understand them resorting to trousers as this problem simply doesn't exist then.

sunsandandwaterslides · 01/07/2018 09:07

It is unbelievable really that when everyone was making fun of David beckham in a sarong that he was just light years ahead of his time!

Lucked · 01/07/2018 09:08

I also believe that 'gender neutral ' is being used as a PC way to deal with the issue of acceptable school skirts.

sunsandandwaterslides · 01/07/2018 09:08

I agree that it should here are your uniform choices, wear what you want. I like dresses and skirts, I think they flatter me more than trousers. How would the men feel if we took away their option to wear trousers and everyone had to wear skirts?

kalapattar · 01/07/2018 09:09

The school nearest us insists on blazers in hot weather and won't allow shorts

Schools are basically run by idiots when it comes to uniform policy.

Other countries seem to do very well without inisting on a uniform.

Oh thank God - someone has found the words I couldn’t find.
