Personally, I appear to have lost all power of speech ...

I think it's about uniform rules.
With skirts, even the ones where you have to buy a specific style from an approved supplier, girls will roll them up. This then results in arguments between pupil and teacher, having a negative impact on learning.
Trousers are a lot harder to alter=fewer arguments=better learning!
I vote trousers.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/07/2018 12:24

Ha...well if they still roll them up then perhaos they can ditch the expensive one supplier skirts and go back to regular skirts? #sixpoundfromtesco

Gruach · 01/07/2018 12:26

I think it's about uniform rules.

It really isn’t ...

The main issue I have with uniform is the inequality in price!
My local secondary -
Boy uniform - shirt, supermarket £3. Trousers, supermarket £5.
Girl uniform - embroidered blouse, school supplier £12. Kilt, school supplier £25+

Sounds good. for young children, skirts are not practical, for older girls way more difficult to be appropriately clothes in.
i also find it interesting that in the 3 multinational companies i've worked in, it was always easy to spit women in higher management: they mostly wear trousers or very sensible skirts in summer. Assistants and junior staff wear short skirts, pencil skirts, things that limit movement.
Being a senior manager myself, I don't have the time or energyto check if my skirt doesn't ride up etc. i wear dresses now as its hot, but have shorts underneath (IT, i do need to be able to crawl unde a desk, senior manager or not. i can't afford to be limited by clothes)

slashlover · 01/07/2018 12:47

When I was at school, we had the opposite problem and were forced to wear skirts, even in the middle of winter.

KindergartenKop · 01/07/2018 12:52

Gruach, in my neck of the woods the purpose of uniform is to stop the rich from showing off and to look smart/professional. Arguments about uniform piss off both staff and students because both parties know that the purpose of school is learning (even the most immature student knows this and generally appreciates it). Just wearing trousers would prevent friction over skirt lengths. I've advocated this for years. Maybe the gender issues are just pushing it further to the front of the table for discussion.
Anyway, school uniform is restrictive as a concept. You could argue that it's your right as a woman to wear a denim jacket as much as it's your right to wear a skirt but if it's not on the uniform list then you're not wearing it!

youarenotkiddingme · 01/07/2018 13:05

Totally with those who say increase options and have them open to all.

Decreasing choice will not make those who will flout the rules re style/length/material comply.

My ds school said no blazers now until September term due to heat. Then said school shirts are being trialled this half term. This made me last because I thought it was a 'gesture' rather than real trial as no one is likely to purchase 2 pairs shirts at £15 a pair for a few weeks 'in case' they change the rules permanently.

They are still insisting on ties though which I would have thought were better to remove than wear shirts in this heat?!

Other local secondaries have allowed pupils to wear pe kit this week.
Fine I say, but ironic when these are the 2 schools most insistent on skirt length and have uniform skirts!
And most pupils have 1 kit so they wear same one for pe and school all week 😫.

I think shirts and shorts/skirt for summer are practice and sensible and can chosen and worn by whomever chooses.

madamginger · 01/07/2018 13:12

I wear a uniform for work and there is only a trouser option, no skirts allowed.
The last time I wore a skirt with any regularity was when I left school 20 odd years ago. I very occasionally wear a skirt or dress but I mainly wear trousers or leggings and a tunic.
DH works for a very large bank and he wears smart casual, he hasn’t worn a shirt and tie at work for years.

kalapattar · 01/07/2018 13:17

I still don't see how banning skirts helps trans people. I am sure there are some trans girls who want to wear what the girls wear. It seems that they now have that option - because the uniform is all the same - but it doesn't really help trans people - it just makes them targets from people who say "Look what trans people have insisted upon now".

It would be interesting to know if trans people at this school have actually requested this.

Gileswithachainsaw · 01/07/2018 13:20

I reckon that the trans girls will still be allowed to wear skirts tbh

The only girls anyone cares about any more are thise who are boys

The rest just have to suck up having to be ashamed of their bodies and hidden away in the most u flattering clothing known to man and accused if wearing skinny trousers should they have any thighs

honeylulu · 01/07/2018 13:29

I agree with the poster who said that all available uniform choices should be available to all pupils. Job done.

herecomesthsun · 01/07/2018 17:23

I had a tiny waist and curvy hips as a teen and would have hated having to wear ill-fitting trousers every day, much easier to get a skirt to fit.

I think there should be options of trousers, shirts, shorts, culottes and skorts open to everyone, boys too if they like.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 01/07/2018 17:47

just get rid of school uniforms

BertrandRussell · 01/07/2018 17:53

I honestly don't understand why anyone is arguing with skirts or trousers ha can be worn by either sex. Why all the super complicated thinking?

ferrier · 01/07/2018 18:04

Skirts are seasonally appropriate all year round.
I'll join the lobby that campaigns for wider dress choices for men, not the one that restricts clothing for women.

June1966 · 01/07/2018 20:32

Personally I think rather than banning skirts, they should make it compulsory for all genders to wear a kilt.

ScrubTheDecks · 01/07/2018 21:57

“Personally I think rather than banning skirts, they should make it compulsory for all genders to wear a kilt.”
Good in Scotland, danger of cultural appropriation in England.....

You don’t understand why schools don’t want boys in skirts? I mean I agree 100% that this is the correct solution but, depressingly, I’m not at all surprised people don’t agree.

Gruach · 04/07/2018 07:05

I get it now.

Skirts are weaponised!

OP posts:
TheGoldenWolfFleece · 04/07/2018 08:00

Surely by objecting to this on the basis that girls are being forced to dress like boys you're reinforcing the notion that trousers are primarily for boys? Isn't that rather sexist?

Gruach · 04/07/2018 08:05

I am objecting to it on the basis that choice is being taken away from girls to satisfy ... other groups.

OP posts:
BertrandRussell · 04/07/2018 08:26

I am not objecting to it on the grounds that girls are being forced to dress like boys. I am objecting to it on the grounds that girls' choices are being curtailed.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 04/07/2018 08:38

I refuse to be seen on trousers and have done for years. I always wore a skirt to school and live in dresses . I have a tiny waist, wider hips and chunky "thunder thighs" that stretch all trousers to look ugly, out of proportion and faintly obscene on me as well as being so uncomfy. I would feel so upset about this I would be begging to change school. My mother always tailored my uniform to fit and would have let me. The choice should be there- for everyone, if you want true equality.

I work alongside the military and declined the offer of being given fatigues & polos for a work away trip to an army base. I work in the office, not out and about and it's far more comfortable for me. The one time I went to view an outdoor activity & walk, NOT attempt the course (I have workout wear for that), no one died because I did it in a skirt.

RiddleyW · 04/07/2018 08:47

I am very uncomfortable in trousers for the same reasons - they always look awful on me. I had to quit a job at weatherspoons when I was a teen because you had to wear black trousers with a tucked in shirt. I honestly couldn't stand it.
