Love Island - 'porny' sort of cattlemarket at heart?

I know 'Love Island' is all the rage.

I've dipped into it, probably tired, late at night, curious to see young people and swimming pools and sun, mindless chat etc .... and what all the fuss is about ...

But last night it made me feel uncomfortable. All the young women - dressed in a way the more revealing the better. Its all about "fit" for the men it seems at the lowest level (often if not always). Sometimes the women but you can see they are struggling too - playing "the market". The worst was somehow young woman put with an "ex" she knew outside (who she'd obviously been hurt by - yeah he was just playing the field at the time and now felt "awkward" she was back on the scene. Will she get angry and hysterical because she was treated badly by lazy lothario, and then be dismissed as a crazy madwoman? Its all looking predictable).

It all feels sad and a bit grim?

I haven’t got that impression at all!

I was incredibly judgy about love island but after being ill and sad this week I binged the whole lot of this one and am now addicted Grin

They’re all running around with barely any clothes on regardless of gender haha. And while a lot of them are clearly twats, I was genuinely heartwarmed by some of the lovely seeming people in there

More controversially is the decision on the junior doctor on it, he is progressively getting more sunburnt each day Grin

confusedlittleone · 29/06/2018 19:13

Her ex was in their first? Nobody forced her to follow him on their!

leafygreens211 · 29/06/2018 19:18

Yes and she doesn’t seem sad or ragey! More very aware that having an ex in there would mean she’d have a sure shot of getting on the show Grin

MrsPicklesonSmythe · 29/06/2018 19:22

She hasn't gone in blind! Shes been approached to go in, seen the show, decided to participate. These are all very strong minded individuals who have chosen to take part in a show they are very familiar with. They aren't plied with alcohol, the decisions in so far as how they conduct themselves, what they do in the bedroom etc are entirely theirs. To hint that there's some sort of exploitation going on is a bit naïve.

liverbird10 · 29/06/2018 19:22

Oof, Love Island. Load of bloody rubbish if you ask me.

Notlivestock · 29/06/2018 19:26

The story seems to be that she saw he was on the show and then approached producers saying she would be happy to go in so I don't think a nasty trick has been played on her.

That said, I don't think the show responded appropriately to Adam, who I think is emotionally abusive. He should have been chucked off imo.

RunMummyRun68 · 29/06/2018 19:29

Revealing clothes? Op get a grip.... it's hot so they wear bikinis!

RunMummyRun68 · 29/06/2018 19:31

Adam should have been chucked off??

What about Ellie just using Alex?
What about Megan for going behind Laura's back?

BellaJessica · 29/06/2018 19:34

Only saw a bit of it whwn flicking through channels and the narrator was saying the boys task was too sneak out and not let the girls they slept with to hear them leave. ShockHmmConfused

RunMummyRun68 · 29/06/2018 19:36

Funny you should mention 'porn' though op as I believe there's 'porny' videos of at least 3 of the girls doing the rounds

Not heard that the boys have done anything like that though.

RunMummyRun68 · 29/06/2018 21:09

Nope op.... doesn't sound like the 'lazy lothario' has hurt her much.... how did you draw that conclusionHmm she says she wants him back if it were not for Dani

Thisismadness · 29/06/2018 21:16

I’m enjoying it. I’m not sure why I’m watching because I’ve not watched reality tv since the early days of big brother. But it’s strangely addictive. Adam is a git but Megan and Wes annoyed me far more. No one goes in without knowing what’s what surely.

LalaLeona · 29/06/2018 21:22

I agree op it's depressing and I feel a bit gutted about my DD watching it when she's older.

Why am I not surprised Runmemummy. Call me psychic.

I think the programme is incredibly cynical. Young love was never meant to be like this.

Young love was never meant to be like this.

It's a game show. They are looking for media fame, not love. They knew exactly what they were putting themselves in for.

RunMummyRun68 · 29/06/2018 22:05

There is also a cash prize

But the fame etc lasts a long time. DD's friend was in it for quite a few weeks....she's still dining out on it!

Boswellox · 29/06/2018 22:17

I watched a clip and felt a bit dirty in that I was watching something that should be private. #Old

Popfan · 29/06/2018 23:09

I think it's total trash - but I bloody love it! Have got drawn in and despise myself but just can't help it now!!Grin

henpeckedinchief · 29/06/2018 23:11

I think the porny vids doing the rounds are revenge porn Sad

LeighaJ · 29/06/2018 23:17

"Love Island - 'porny' sort of cattlemarket at heart?"

I thought that was the appeal of the show... to people who clearly have no taste.

HelenaDove · 29/06/2018 23:21

Media and society tells girls and women to be sexy and then crucifies them for it when they do just that.

JJS888 · 30/06/2018 06:06

People like the OP always search for something to make themselves feel better.

Interesting interview with Harriet Harman yesterday, it's one of her favourite programs. She is right that everyone is objectified, it's nothing to sneer about. It's tv. They don't have any moral obligation to make tv that is acceptable to the frumpy housewife all the time, that would be boring. And isn't it amazing how, same with JK and big brother, the twitchy mummies never watch it but happen to see it by accident Grin

RunMummyRun68 · 30/06/2018 07:54

henpecked what makes you say that?

RunMummyRun68 · 30/06/2018 07:57

One of those hem makes and sells her own videos.... no bloody 'revenge' there hen

Ifailed · 30/06/2018 07:57

Revealing clothes? Op get a grip.... it's hot so they wear bikinis!

Plenty of people live in hot climates, and almost all of them cover up to keep the sun off themselves. It's just a meat-market.
